As I lay sleeping I found myself dreaming quite a lot. Like normal sleep I couldn't tell the passage of time, but I know I had drifted in and out of dreaming multiple times. These dreams weren't like normal ones either. I could see myself laying on the forest floor sleeping firstly, this third party perspective not normal for anyone when dreaming as far as I recall. The events that took place in the dreams also seemed as if they could happen in real life, or were happening in real life. Perhaps I should simply describe them. Odd isn't it? I'm thinking about and remembering dreams while I'm sleeping. I think I would be very scared by this if it wasn't happening in my head. Weird and scary stuff so often feels normal in dreams I remember.
The first dream was one with Miya in it. I could tell it happened at night because I could hear the sound of crickets and an owl hooting somewhere. I could see myself sleeping though it was all in black and white. All around me I could see the trees and bushes, their leaves blowing in some cool night breeze. It was summer of course, the heat of the sun finally gone from the sky. I couldn't see very far away from my body, perhaps a hundred feet or so. The length of my arm's reach basically. In front of my head of course was the ruined temple. The shadows of the stone pillars cast out into the forest and the shadows of the leaves almost danced around them like living things. If I was the size of these tiny people I would be pretty freaked out here. The sound of Miya's voice seemed to carry on the wind to me. She was asking that I keep her family safe and keep her brother from getting lost in the mountains again. Like I could actually do any of that.
Then the dream transitioned into the late morning. It would have been the next day, but what time it was in the waking world I had no idea. My surroundings were the same as the night before, although I was sleeping with my face straight down into the ground. My head was still tucked into my arms and I could see some drool on the ground. Really this is so embarrassing to look at. The focus quickly changed however as several figures came walking through the forest and onto the temple ruins. I could see Miya there alongside two others. They were men much older than her. One of these adults might be her father maybe? You have a funny way of knowing who people are in your dreams but I didn't get that with them. All I knew is that one had a large beard and short hair both brown. While the other was blonde. Both were dressed like some kind of olden times farmer. This makes me realize I don't even know what year it is. I'll have to notate to ask when I wake up.
"Look look! There she is! I told you she was real!" Miya said as she ran across the temple's floor. She stopped right in front of my head, pointing at it with great excitement as if she felt vindicated.
"Stay away from there!" the brown haired man said.
Both of the men ran up the steps of the temple and across the floor halfway. They stopped about fifty feet away from my head, clearly too frightened of the sight of me to go any further. That's me. Jenna the big scary monster.
"There's nothing to be afraid of father" Miya replies. "Here look I'll even touch her!" Miya reached out with her right hand in order to touch my hair.
The blonde man shouts at her reaching out to her himself. "Miya don't!"
Miya father then overcomes his fear and runs the remaining distance between them, grabbing hold of Miya's arms tight and beginning to pull her away from me. Miya struggles against him, trying to stay close to me.
"No father! She's not dangerous or evil! She saved Tromly! She's good!"
I let out a snort which causes them all to jump in surprise. All the noise failed to wake me however as I simply turn my head to the side revealing my face with some drool coming out of my mouth. I feel myself blushing inside my mind. This is just too embarrassing, what kind of assholes go around screaming when people are sleeping? In the dream I notice myself blushing as well. Wait a second... That's odd.
"Duncan she's asleep!" the blonde man whispered as loudly as he felt he could get away with. "For the love of the holy keep your voice down!"
The now named Duncan continued dragging Miya away from me while keeping his grip on her arms ironclad. He also had lowered his voice to a loud whisper. "That's enough out of you girl. You know its been thousands of years since a goddess visited this land. This is a very bad omen and if we have any luck she'll never wake again."
"But father..." Miya protests weakly.
"I said that's enough" Duncan replies sternly. "Now come home. If we were meant to wake up this goddess the clergy would already be here."
At this point Miya gives up and cooperates with her father, following him and the blonde man away from my and across the temple floor. Her father let go of her and the three of them walked down the stone steps and out of my view in the dream.
First off Miya's dad is a complete jerk. If this was real I would give him a piece of my mind. Apparently someone like me is a real goddess and they know about their existence. Why would they assume I'm bad news if they haven't even seen one for thousands of years? Does this mean goddesses are some kind of race of being like in some role playing game and can be both evil and good? This doesn't bode well for me if I'm going to have to start dealing with all kinds of other giant people. I feel myself heating up from frustration. Wait wait wait this is all a dream! Why am I brooding over this if its all a dream? Its fake! I sigh, which I do in the dream, which is normal because its a dream. Moments later the dream fades.
----
Later on I have another of these strange dreams. I know I slept for three days before, so its very likely I'm sleeping a very long time again and thus am having multiple dreams. This one is pretty much the same except it takes place in the afternoon. The scene I can witness is still the temple and surrounding forest, still about one hundred feet around my body. I noticed though there is a small pile of fruit and cut meats on the stone slab in front of my head. There is even a little basket or two they are all in. Also there is a small array of candles around the baskets as if they are some kind of offering. Is Miya making offerings to me? Are other people doing that? Oh god they better not be making sacrifices to me! I try to get up. I strain and fight. But its no use. Its that feeling you get when you're asleep and try your hardest to wake up but just can't do it. This dream has to be reality, I have to be seeing what's going on around me when I'm asleep. If I'm some kind of goddess a power like this would make sense. Why am I stuck asleep though? Why can't I wake up?
I quiet my mind as I hear voices approaching. There are many, like a small group. As these people step into my range of vision I see indeed a small group of about seven people walking up the stone steps of the temple and onto its main surface. They are all dressed like medieval peasants or something. Some of them have pieces of fruit or clothing. Oh man they really are making offerings to me! What makes me jump is that a second group of people, this time at least ten. They also have gifts of some sort. All together these seventeen people are of various ages. Some adults, a few children, and even a few elderly. Miya is in the second group. I should have known. The girl is starting some kind of damn cult around me!
Unable to wake up yet I can only watch as these people come before my head and begin to deposit the gifts on the makeshift alter. This is so awkward, this is unbelievable I cant believe this is happening to me. Then they all start praying to me, actually praying! They pray about their safety or for the safety of their family or pets. A few pray about the harvest for the fall being bountiful, there's a real classic. A little girl prays that she can meet a strong husband in the future. They pray to me as if I can do anything about any of this... and yet...
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
I feel something inside of me, a warmth that grows from somewhere deep inside me. It rises up from the depths of my being and into my waking self. It feels good, it feels tasty, it makes me feel alive. I feel my body stirring as my whole world becomes dark. Its darkness not of unconsciousness but of closed eyes. I'm waking up!
"Mmmmm..." I hear myself moan. "What year is it?"
I lift my head out of my arms and stretch them out in front of me, each arm going on one side of the temple as my legs reach out far behind me. My whole body tenses as I do what feels like the biggest stretch of my life, that squealing sound you make when doing a really good stretch coming out of me. I then turn my head to where the temple is and slowly open my eyes.
"Eek!" a child squeals.
"She's looking right at us!" a man says in an uneasy voice.
"Shhhh!" that was some older woman.
There they are. I see the whole group of people standing in front of me on the temple like a group of tiny dolls. The offering baskets are in front of them on a tiny alter with the candles all around. The fruit, the clothing, the gifts all there exactly like in the dream. This settles it once and for all. They were no dreams, they were me somehow witnessing what was going on around me while asleep. I'm a goddess for real.
"Goddess Jenna?" it was Miya.
She stepped forward out of the small crowd and in front of the alter and offerings. Miya's ease before me seemed to lessen the fear in the others as well. The little girl of the group even pointing at me and telling who was obviously her mother how huge I was. The mother shushed her and held down her daughter's hand, her fear not entirely gone.
"What was it you said?" Miya asked. "I'm sorry if we disturbed your rest. You've been sleeping for two days and..."
"Its fine" I said cutting her off. "I was having this dream. Well it wasn't a dream. Just nevermind."
If I could barely understand what was going on the last thing I needed to do is confuse all these people with what I've been experiencing. I look over the group of people one by one and each time my eyes locked onto someone I could see them flinch. I then returned my gaze to Miya.
"I was just asking what year it was. The last thing I remember before going to sleep was that I wanted to ask you what year it was."
Miya looked confused but answered quickly. "Its the summer of 3074." She looked down and spoke in a timid tone. "If its ok to ask Goddess. Have you been someplace else before you appeared here?"
I look down at her and frown, which only causes more tension in the crowd. Miya also seemed to be worried about my expression so I quickly return to a neutral face. I lift my left hand and wave it around in the air as I speak.
"Oh I suppose you could say so." I say trying to be nonchalant as I look nowhere in particular. I then look down at Miya again. "Say you guys don't have flying cars or computers or radio or anything do you?"
Asking general questions about technology would be the fastest way to figure out what kind of tech level I'm dealing with in this world. If these people even knew anyway. It held the risk of me sounding like an idiot if the technology was more advanced than the world I remembered, but if it was I could always use the excuse I was sleeping for thousands of years or whatever. The tried and true copout for any ancient being.
Miya looked up at my face in utter confusion. "I'm sorry Goddess Jenna but I have no idea what any of those things are..." she looked back at the adults in the small crowd for direction.
One of the men spoke and stammered up to me. "G-Great Goddess Jenna... Such things are not familiar to our people. Are they things of the goddesses?"
I sigh and shake my head, my disappointment not going unnoticed by these people. I was never good at hiding my emotions. If future technology was out of the picture I may as well try the opposite direction.
"So you ride around on horses, use plows to till fields, and use fire to light your homes?" I asked.
There were nods from the crowd and from Miya.
So its some kind of medieval world with not much technology. I might as well go for the ultimate now.
"Magic? Elves?"
The man from before spoke again. He seemed to be the one most comfortable speaking to me. "People who can use magic are very rare in our land great Goddess. Creatures called elves are not familiar though races other than humans do exist in the world."
Jackpot! I'm in some kind of fantasy setting with all kinds of crazy nonsense! Is this really all real? If I'm not dreaming then this has got to be some karmic reincarnation as a reward for me due to my past life. I well up with excitement and a stupid grin forms on my face. It vanishes as quickly as it appears and I turn my head to the side. I then lift my left hand to my chin while my right arm holds me upright.
This is a real world I've been transported to and I'm some kind of giant goddess with a few already revealed superpowers, well now obvious magic powers. If I was sent here I was sent here for a reason. Who sent me? I can think of someone but I can't remember who. My memories are still not complete. The implications of all this are simply astronomical. I must find out more about my situation and I cannot afford to waste my new power on some kind of self fulfilling power fantasy. I have an obvious duty to be a real goddess to these people and take care of them however I can.
"Goddess?"
Miya's voice snaps me back to reality and I jump, my train of thought derailed and cruelly smashed against the rocks of the present to scatter across the mountainside.
"Nothing! Nothing's wrong!" I say surprised and somewhat loudly. I collect myself and turn back to the people who I can see had a bit of a fright themselves. "I was just lost in thought that's all."
An old lady steps forward out of the gathered people and speaks up to me. Despite how weak her voice is I can hear her as clearly as if she were standing next to me. That's my enhanced senses kicking in again undoubtedly.
"Oh Goddess Jenna" she said. "We are very grateful to you for coming and blessing our village with your presence. We understand that the ways of goddesses are not the ways of humans, but we ask you, no beg of you, to come to our village and watch over us."
With this the old woman attempts to kneel, one of the men from the group coming to help her do it halfway while everyone else present gets on their knees and bows their heads to me. Following this many members of the crowd ask me or beg me to come watch over them like a guardian deity. Miya too is on her knees and bowing to me.
"Please Goddess Jenna!" she exclaims. "We beg of you to protect us!"
I really had no choice in the matter, but I pretended to think for a few moments. "I think I will come to your village and visit for a while."
The small crowd erupted into celebration.
"However I want you all to go ahead of me." I point to the man who was the first to speak to me and then to Miya. "You and you Miya will stay behind with me and lead me to your village once the rest have returned to it."
"Of course Goddess" Miya replied bowing.
"Yes Goddess" the man said bowing also.
The rest of the small crowd got up and began walking across the temple. Various goodbye waves and parting words of praise were sent my way as they departed. The man and Miya stayed behind, kneeling together before me. After the group walked down the stairs of the temple it was only moments before they were walking into the forest, and only minutes before their voices faded away. The three of us that remained sat in silence. I was still reviewing my rational to my decision. I didn't like crowds much and if I was going to be a goddess that was respected any rookie mistakes would be best done in front of one or two people who already respected me.
"So you two" I said looking down at them. I held my chin in my folded fingers. Despite still laying down my head was still twenty feet or more above them. "I hope you're not scared of me or anything. Also what is your name?" I ask looking at the man.
"My name is Elphonse" he replied bowing his head. "Thank you for allowing me to stay here Goddess."
"Elphonse is the village blacksmith Goddess!" Miya said excited to share her knowledge.
Looking at the man he certainly fit the part. He was muscular with a chiseled chin, quite handsome if I had to admit it. His hair was short and black, his beard short and well kept. His attire was dirty, blackened with what was obviously soot. All he was missing was the leather apron and he would be the stereotypical medieval blacksmith.
"Very good" I say nodding in approval. "We shall wait here a while and then you two will help me find your village. In the meanwhile I'm going to stretch my legs a bit ok?"
The two of them vocalized their understanding as I slowly began to sit up. I was careful not to be too earth shattering since they were so close to me, but since they were sitting it should be fine. As I slid my torso back into the trees and pushed myself up I thought about the group that left and wondered if they could feel my footsteps as I stood upright. I bet if they turned around they could even see me standing over the trees. This whole situation was wild, but I was going to do my best with what I was given. I took one last look at the two kneeling on the temple floor and turned to take a quick walk.
