Arc 1: New Goddess - Chapter 11

I found myself sleeping again, well dreaming is a better way to describe it. Now that I have this Goddess Vision I can clearly see whats around me even when I've fallen asleep. There still is deep sleep though, the time when I lose all consciousness and know nothing, though what happens in that time is beyond even my knowledge. The last thing I remember doing before finding myself in this wakeful sleep state once again was laying down on the edge of the village for another rest. I had just finished talking to some villagers about their daily lives.

Strangely it was night at the moment, the sky overcast enough to hide the moon from time to time. Usually I only woke up during the daylight hours, and I felt my body as non-responsive to my will. It seemed that with Goddess Vision I was able to be active in it whenever I'm not in deep sleep, even if I would normally still not wake up yet. I took stock of my surroundings and saw that my range had once again expanded, now able to cover the entire village and some small distance into the forest. This is when I noticed something was wrong.

A man was standing in the village watchtower and shouting, thought I couldn't tell what he was saying I could see him acting in alarm. He was pointing into the forest in an area beyond where I was laying. Another man was on the ground running through the village and sounding an alarm. Using my power I could actually see inside houses and it was something I hoped no one would have to find out about. Using this power now I could see people waking up inside their homes and moving about, the men grabbing whatever weapon they could while the women gathered their children to them. This is bad.

Shifting my attention into the forest I could see a group of people emerging from the treeline, some of them on horseback. Though my vision wasn't perfect in this state I could see they were all armed with bows, spears, and swords. Some of them were also armored with leather and small amounts of metal. They didn't look like an organized group of soldiers or anything, these were definitely raiders or bandits of some kind.

The group of figures were almost all men, only one woman among them that I could see. I assume they had come silently at first as they held no torches, they even snuck up to me. They must have been following the light of the few torches in the village as guides for their sneak attack. Now that the alarm had been raised they were charging in with weapons drawn! The desperate prayers of many villagers could already be heard ringing around inside my head, but despite all my efforts I couldn't move my body at all! Move body! Dammit!

As I lay cursing my inability to move the bandits reached the village. They went right past me! How could they have not seen me? Maybe to them I looked like some kind of defensive wall in the darkness. I was laying very still after all. There was going to be chaos and death if I didn't wake up though! People were going to be killed! I've never successfully gotten control of my body and forced myself awake from this in between state before. Oh god what am I gunna do? I remember this father in heaven Elohiem. Will calling out to him do anything? Am I remembering things correctly? Please dad let me wake up!

"Don't let them get into the houses!" a man from the village yelled.

There were screams from women and crying from children. Oh how I hate the sound of crying. Maybe I'm too empathetic for my own good. A small group of men from the village had managed to gather in the main pathway leading into the village and its center square, their weapons nothing more than farm equipment really. There was maybe one or two swords in total. The bandits on horses were closing in weapons drawn as the rest charged in yelling.

"The goddess will protect us!" another village man said. "We have to believe!"

That's when it happened. I felt my left leg slipping off from where it rested on top of right leg. You see I had been sleeping on my side, sort of half curled up into the fetal position with my hands supporting my head. Because of this my legs were stacked up on top of each other like logs in a pile. Had gravity suddenly been enough to pull my leg down? Had I finally gained control of my body? Whatever the case the effect on the situation was immediate.

THOOM!

A strong earthquake shook the village as my leg impacted the ground. It was more powerful than one of my footsteps but not nearly enough to cause any major damage. Both bandits and villagers were caught off guard and struggled to stay standing. Many of them didn't succeed and fell about on the ground or simply had their legs give way and collapse. The few horses the bandits had reared up and neighed in fright, tossing any unprepared riders onto the ground with a thud. The horses that freed themselves of their riders fled off into the night and the ones that still had riders had to be brought under control.

"What the hell was that?" one of the bigger bandits demanded angrily. He was riding a horse and turning it left to right in bewilderment.

"The goddess!" cried multiple villagers. "Its the goddess!"

It was then the moon was revealed once again in the night sky, the clouds moving from in front of it and allowing its pale light to cast down over the village. The light hit my face and disturbed me quite a bit, nothing is worse than having a light shined in your eyes while you're sleeping.

"Oooooohh."

My body shifted around, my legs extending out as my arms reached away from my head. My whole body straightened out as I did a big stretch. I let out stretching noises as I moved. The ground rumbled and shook with my movements, again causing any who were standing to have to stabilize themselves or fall over.

"Eeeeerrrrr."

Still finding myself in that half awake state I couldn't actually control my body, but I did feel what was going on with it. Its like when you're just waking up and can feel everything or a friend poking you, or maybe hear someone talking to you. I could just see everything happening around me at the same time which made it weirder. After the stretching was finished my body then curled back up into mostly the same position as before, again supporting my head with my arms. Well that's great. I still get to sit here watching huh?

The effect on the unfolding situation couldn't have been more dramatic however. Seeing such a massive person moving around on in the distance had left the bandits in a state of paralytic shock at first. They had just stood there staring up at me in awe, their bodies tensed in fight of flight but their minds unable to process what they saw. When I had begun to stretch there were yells of panic and fear as the bandits fled the village in blind terror. The ones on horseback simply rode off into the night, driving their horses forward uncaring of the danger. The ones on foot simply ran as if death itself was lapping at their heels. Most even dropped their weapons as it simply wasn't worth holding onto a weapon so useless against their foe.

There were cheers from the villagers of course. I had saved them from a terrible fate as being looted would have certainly included many deaths and the loss of anything valuable they had. The men who had come out to fight ran over to me and cheered up at me praising me and thanking me for saving them. Some of the the women and children also came over to worship me, their previous fear washed away by the relief they felt. Thank you goddess they said.

Really the entire ordeal was pretty bizarre for me. It was like watching a movie you were starring in and being unable to move your body on the screen. I was sort of floating above myself in the air with this map laid out with everyone on it. Dispite all the praise I was getting I was more focused on the fact I had just moved during this whole vision thing. Had my father given me power? Could I move again? I focused all my mental energy on my pinkie finger. Move finger move! After several moments of failure I was about to give up. Then...

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

It moved!

My pinkie finger on my left hand wiggled around a little. None of the villagers noticed this but I did. I felt it too! I did it! I can move my finger while sleeping! Kinda sad I'm celebrating this but whatever. Just when I was about to try again unconsciousness took me.

----

The next time I woke up I found myself sleeping still. Through the Goddess Vision I could see that it was night, though it wasn't the same night as before. Don't ask me how I could tell specifically, I was just sure that more than a day's time had passed. There was some sort of pleasant aroma in the air as well. A nice smell like burnt herbs or spices. Mmmm. I felt myself to be in control of my body again and sort of felt the weight of my eyelids on top of my eyes. I was awake now?

I opened my eyes.

The night was dark and cool, the wind not quite chilly but cold enough you would want to wear a jacket. I was barefoot with only a worn dress covering me and yet I didn't seem bothered by the temperature at all. A goddess wouldn't be I suppose. I then slowly and careful rolled myself onto my back, trying not to disturb anyone. Despite my best efforts there was still a slight rumble in the ground from my movements. I hope the people are used to such things by now.

I looked up at the night sky. This entire time so far I had never been awake at night, always sleeping and waking up during the day. It was relieving to see the stars again as I didn't know how much I had missed them until now. They sparkled in the vast darkness above me, so many of them, more than I had ever seen before. Its funny, if I didn't know any better I could have been on my own world still. I knew I wasn't though and now I had proof. None of the constellations I knew were among these stars. The moon too was a bit strange, its color almost a big blue, not something I had known the moon where I came from to have happen to it.

"Goddess?"

As I lay there thinking a sudden voice broke the silence. It came from somewhere near my right ear and surprised me so much I actually jumped a little.

"Shit! I didn't mean to startle you" came the voice again. It was a man's voice.

I turn my head to the right, just rolling it as carefully as possible to avoid making rumbles in the ground. Man it sucked to have to be this careful. It was dark out too and I couldn't see very far. Thankfully for me the man who was speaking to me was holding a torch. He appeared to be one of the night watch for the village as he was dressed like a guard. He had a simple metal helmet on his head, plain leather armor of some kind, and was holding a spear in his right hand. His left hand was of course holding the torch. No electricity of course for flashlights.

"Its fine guy" I whispered to him. Hopefully whispering was quiet enough to avoid waking the whole village up. "What do you need?"

The man seemed taken back by my reply and instinctively took a step back from my huge face. Its easy to forget from my perspective just how terrifying it must be seeing my huge head. I'm still getting used to seeing tiny people on the group myself.

"W-Well goddess" he stammered. "I just h-happened to notice you waking up and-"

I took his pause as his nerves getting the better of him. "Go on."

He seemed to regain his bravery and straightened himself up. "Well I was wanting to ask you a question great goddess."

The world around us was so dark even with the moon above us. All the shadows in the village were deep and the forest was an inky void with only a few trees visible on the very edge with the dim moonlight coming from above. Living as a human in such a technology level must be terrifying. I turned my head back so I was looking up at the sky again.

"Do you think goddesses can see in the dark?" I asked, not really registering his request.

"I-I don't know" he replied looking into the sky as well. "I mean goddesses can do anything right?"

I then turned my head to the left. The pleasant smell was coming from over here, but the shadow of my body was casting the entire area up to the pitch dark forest into darkness. He's right I suppose. A goddess really should be able to do anything. Seeing in the dark is such a simple thing in a fantasy world it should be easy for me. I focus my eyes and concentrate on the thought. I can see in the dark I think.. I cast night vision on myself I think.

Suddenly as if by magic I see my vision expanding. It was like the moon was getting brighter or the shadows got smaller. The ground around me was suddenly visible, all the grass and rocks suddenly clear. Beyond in the forest the darkness between the trees receded, exposing all the ferns and bushes to me. The trunks of the trees could be made out in the distance as far as I could see during the day.

I hold back a gasp as soon I can see as well as I could during the day, just with a slight bluish tint. I actually can see in the dark! My excitement rose up within me, swelling to fill my chest. I take in a deep breathy gasp and as it begins try to hush it as well as I could. Magic. I used it.

"Are you alright goddess?" the man asked in a concerned tone.

"Oh nothing" I whisper back to him. "I'm just getting used to seeing in the dark."

The excitement is evident even in my whispered voice and he was sure to pick up on it. I didn't really care at the moment what he thought about it though. It was then I noticed a little construction sitting in the middle of the small field between the forest and me. The thing was a small wooden platform with a large arch supported by two pillars. It had some stairs going up to it and on the center was a small alter. This was a shrine! A shrine to me? I blushed heavily and was suddenly happy my face was turned the opposite direction of the man. The smell was coming from a big bowl on the alter that was filled with smoldering plants of some kind. A burnt offering.

"The village built that shrine for you great goddess" the man said, probably figuring I was looking at it. "Its thanks for you saving us from the bandit attack yesterday night."

So it had been a day. I knew it.

"Thank you" I whispered. "It smells nice."

I then turned my head so I was looking up at the sky again. The ability to use magic like night vision meant that surely I would be able to use other magic. I thought about the dark and frightening world these people lived in all the time. One of my long term goals was to help them invent the light bulb so they could light the world themselves. But what could I do in the mean time?

"It would be nice to have more light in this world" I said quietly to myself.

The man had obviously heard me. "You being here in our village provides more light than any of us could have imagined goddess."

It was a nice sentiment, though I suppose he couldn't have known I meant literally. Perhaps like with the vision before I could use some sort of spell to create light? Like wizards have at the end of the staff. I lifted my left hand into the air and curled my hand into a half circle. What if I could create a light in my hand I thought. I focused in on the gap between my fingers and thought: let there be light.

The man beside my head gasped.

In the space between my fingers a light appeared. It was tiny at first, a tiny pinprick of light. But all you need is a tiny amount of light to illuminate a room. I just stared at it myself without having a reaction. There it was, a magical light in my hand. How should I react to this? Looking at it was all I could think to do. As I stared it grew bigger until it was about the size of my fingernail. Its light was warm, as in you could feel its warmth. It wasn't hot though, it was like room temperature of seventy degrees F. Fahrenheit. Yes. The light itself was so white and yet so yellow, like the light of the sun itself. It was everything you would want from a light: warm, welcoming, pleasant, comforting, and of course illuminating. The light from my light lit up the area around me like a miniature sun, banishing the darkness and making the shadows intensify.

I snapped out of my mesmerization when I sensed people waking up in the village. With a jolt I lost concentration on the light and it vanished as quickly as it appeared. The darkness of the night engulfed the world once again with only the pale light of the moon and starts to illuminate the clearing.

"Th-That..." the man stammered.

A sudden fatigue came over me. Perhaps I used up all my mana points or something. It was such a simple spell I thought, though I guess I did use two. I need to level up I guess. A yawn escaped my lips and I moved my left hand down over my mouth.

"Awwh... Please forgive me" I said sleepily. "I think I need to sleep a bit more."

My left arm slid down onto the ground by my side, settling down with a thundering rumble. I was just too tired to control its decent enough to avoid such a thing. As my eyelids became too heavy for me to resit I felt them closing and I couldn't open them again.

"Tell them" I whispered as my mind faded into sleep. "Tell the villagers I love them..."
