Arc 1: New Goddess - Chapter 21

As the days passed by I wondered how well I was doing at being a goddess. My daily training with magic was helping me develop more ways to help people and I was able to answer more complicated prayers. There were two major problems I was having though as far as answering prayers went. When people asked for specific things its not like I can conjure them up out of thin air, something I've been trying to do for a while now but have been unable to pull off. The other thing is healing people. I've been able to grow plants that are able to used as medicine for various ailments but that relies both on the person not being in mortal danger and my own knowledge about plants. These are the two main goals for me as a goddess, at least in the short term.

It was another clear morning today, though seeing the clouds in the far distance it wasn't going to stay that way. One thing I missed was meteorology for sure, being able to predict the weather with great accuracy is probably something I won't get to appreciate until satellites are invented again or I can figure out a magic spell for that. The morning fog that rolled down from the mountains was just starting to clear up while I walked around the mountain forest. Going for a morning walk was part of my routine now. I hadn't passed out in the last few days but I had done some sleeping partly to spend time not because I actually seemed to need it that much at this point.

The fog did make it more difficult to see what was on the ground as my feet stomped around but thanks to my goddess vision I could tell if any living animal or person was down there at least. It was kinda weird like walking through a room where a fog machine was operating. In my past life I would be down there in the fog like everyone else. At least when I reached the village again the fog seemed to dissipate for the most part. Now that the morning sun was out it was all going burn off in short order.

It was then an alarm started going off inside my mind. I closed my eyes and looked around prayer list display. There shouldn't be a lot of people praying because they would be waking up around this time, much less for a life or death situation. That's what this prayer was about, someone was dying and multiple people were praying for my help which is why the alarm.

Where were they?

"Jerorf cut his leg cut open by an axe! Please save him oh goddess!" Prayers of that nature.

I saw the location on the map I have inside my head. They were up in the mountains in the area the lumberjacks were currently cutting down trees for the lumber company, and therefore for me, and therefore for the town defenses. This Jerorf must be a lumberjack and the others praying must be as well. There were four of them all in a single area. I turned around and ran off towards them.

I'm coming guys!

My steps surely echoed around the mountain like thunderclaps, the misty fog swirling around my legs as they churned through it like stirring a pot. Thankfully they were only a five mile journey away from the village which for me was less than a minute of running. There were more human icons popping up on my goddess vision as I finalized the approach and they were all looking around to avoid my steps certainly.

I slowed down and came to a stop as I reached the immediate area where the praying people were located at. The signs of logging were present with many stumps poking up out of the ground and felled trees laying about. This was only possible for me to see due to my goddess vision, with my eyes open the entire area was hidden by the blanket of thick fog. I then spread my arms wide and swept them across the area.

"Wind!"

With the expending of a little mana I brought in a swift wind to rush over the area. It came up from behind me and gusted through the trees, catching up the fog and sending it twisting into the air like a cloud bank caught up in the sky. The result: an instant clearing of the land below, an oasis of clear air existing as a pocket in the still foggy forest. Immediately I saw the group of four men by a fallen tree, one of them laying on the ground.

"Goddess!" one of them called out to me.

"I'm on it!" I replied.

As gently as I could I took the final two steps to where the four were, kneeling down with a thundering boom. With my excellent eyesight I took in the situation instantly. Jerorf was laying down with a log at his back to prop him up, his left leg bleeding quite badly with a massive gash in it. He had already lost a lot of blood from what it looked like.

"What happened?" I asked leaning in and looming over them.

Jerorf spoke up. "I was-"

One of the other men cut him off. "Don't try to talk just relax." He looked up at me. "Jerorf was cutting down a tree and his axe slipped, almost cutting his leg clean off. The unlucky bastard."

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

I ignited a flame on the tip of my finger, got to cauterize the wound. No that's a last resort. I cut the flame off and lower my face closer to where they were on the ground. It was going to be like trying to do medical work on a bug, which is bascially what I'm going to be doing.

"Its alright now Jerorf" I said in as soothing of a voice as I could. "Your goddess is here and everything is going to be alright now."

He stammered something and sweat could be seen all over his body. He was losing it and probably hallucinating at this point. I had to heal him or he would die. Carefully I lower my left hand and my index finger.

"Move back now" I instruct to the other three men.

They obey and stand up, backing away from poor Jerorf and giving me plenty of space to lower my index finger down to right above my patient. I take a deep breath and lower it down to touch Jerorf's legs. There was a cry of pain from him as my skin touched him, his tiny legs easily vanishing under my fingertip and causing him pain despite how gently I was touching him.

"Everything is going to be fine" I said closing my eyes.

I took a deep breath, sucking in a great deal of air and causing a gust of wind felt by the men below as the air rushed into me. With my eyes closed I saw the world around me in my goddess vision with my focus on the man bleeding out before me. Perhaps the secret to this healing had something to do with visualizing things as well?

I've seen the internal workings of the human body before. I can vaguely remember seeing things like pictures of the skeleton, muscles, digestive system, and the like. Maybe if I can just picture the inside of Jerorf's body. Yes! I push a very tiny amount of my mana into his little body and let it flow around inside him just like I do with objects and plants. I can see his body forming a more detailed figure in my mind's eye. Now I can see the large gash in his leg with perfect clarity, its hard to imagine how a simple axe could do this much damage. Damn being a lumberjack was dangerous, he's lucky it wasn't a chainsaw or something then his leg would actually be gone.

The other three men were standing and staring at the scene while a few others came walking out of the fog into the cleared area to see what was going on. I wasn't worried about them and let my focus narrow in on Jerorf's body with a laser focus. With such a tiny body I had to be careful not to overload him with mana but this would be possible. I felt my fingertip glow as I pushed just a bit more mana into his body, shoving it down his leg into the wound. Heal I thought. Oh please God let this work!

There were gasps of amazement around me as I saw the wound closing up in my internal vision. It was working! He lost a lot of blood though so I had to heal that too. I wasn't sure exactly how so I just willed my mana already inside him to convert into blood. It was actually easier to imagine then I thought it would be, and thankfully it worked. It seemed all the blood he was missing was formed from my mana.

I removed my finger from his body and it stopped glowing. Opening my eyes I looked down at him as I remained kneeling in the forest. The fog was already almost upon us again, creeping in to replace the fog I had blown away. I didn't bother using more wind to clear it as the emergency had passed. I took a deep breath and glanced around at the other men that had come to observe. What was important to me was that I had saved a life and had learned how to use healing magic. Yay for me!

"I can't believe it!" one of the three men said as they walked over to Jerorf.

He helped Jerorf stand up, pulling him up as the recently healed man struggled to regain his balance.

"How do you feel?" I asked looking down at them.

Jerorf wobbled a bit as he stood on his feet fully again. He looked around and put his hand to his head before looking up at my above him in the sky and taking a step back in surprise.

"I... Goddess!"

I just smiled down at him while the other two men that were with him originally came over to him and examined him themselves.

"You're all healed!" one of them said.

"Its a miracle!" said the other.

"I was seeing the goddess standing over me" Jerorf said. "I could feel a warmth in my body, in my legs." He looked down at his leg in disbelief. "Well then I opened my eyes and my leg was good as new! I don't even feel dizzy."

All the blood on the ground and all over his axe had come from him after all. Anyone after losing that much blood wouldn't be able to stand much less walk about. I could understand his confusion.

"I used magic to restore your blood loss too" I said down to him. "That's why you don't feel dizzy."

All of the lumberjacks bowed to me and began worshiping me. Jerorf did as well of course and praised me with all his little heart. Now I was getting prayer notifications from all of them about how amazing I was. I gotta be honest it felt pretty great.

"Yes yes. Praise me!" I said smiling.

I stood up and brushed the dirt off my legs as the fog finally rolled in and covered the area with its thick mist once again. Everyone was now barely visible to me and I wouldn't be very visible to them besides my lower legs. I raised my finger and wagged it around.

"Now I'm going back to the village. I want you boys to be careful alright? I don't want to have to come back out here to heal people all the time. If I wasn't around you would be careful so be so even with me around ok?"

There was a chorus of yes goddess and the like as they thanked me for my miracles. I really need to figure out how to keep this from going to my head. The last thing I want is to become one of those holier than thou people, though it is justified in this instance. I mean not really, my power does come from their worship. Thoughts to think about later.

"Ok boys have a good day now" I say turning around and walking away.

The shaking of my footsteps would eventually leave them. The walk back to the village would take a few minutes which didn't leave me much time to think about what had just happened. There were plenty of people waking up by now also, likely due to my running steps as well. That meant more prayers to be answered of course. My life certainly was busy these days and I felt that was a good thing.
