Chapter 8: Wait... So I'm Not Human?!

----------Ivy’s POV----------

It’s been a couple days since I got my new title, and I have gotten used to my powers that accompanies it.  I felt really bad when I used Cure of Misfortune on a goblin.  I ended up putting the poor creature out of its misery after ten minutes.  I cannot say exactly what happened, but that afterwards there were people out looking for ‘The Tortured Banshee’.  All I did was place a curse… I feel miserable.

*Knock*  *Knock*

[Me]  “I got it!”

I jump out of my seat and open the door to a 15 year old boy.  He had dirty blond hair and dark brown eyes.  When I opened the door he first looked around and upon seeing no one at his eye level he gazed downward.  His eyes opened wide when he saw me and the seemed to be silent until he muttered something about a book.

I sensed Mom and Dad come behind me and I turn my curious gaze toward them.

[Mom]  “Fufufu… Ivy, this is your brother, James.  James, meet your sister, Ivy.”

[James]  “Uhh… hi?”

…Is he alright?  No, better yet, SINCE WHEN DID I HAVE A BROTHER!  I, who am now five, never once heard about or seen this brother of mine.  For some reason I have an feeling that it was my parent’s fault for this…

[Me]  “Hi big brother!”

I decided to cheer him up with a positive attitude and a large smile upon my face.  Suddenly I hear a sharp intake of breath and my parents are staring at me with wide eyes.  What did I do wrong?

[Mom]  “Ivy… did you ever smile like that to anyone else?”

[Me]  “…no…”

[Dad]  “It is really important that you refrain from it in public places, okay?”

[Me]  “Yes?”

[James]  “…but it’s alright if you do it at home, alright?”

Now my brother’s on board!  Did I mess up my smile?  Did I look scary?  Oh no, if I looked scary than I can see why I would need to be more careful.  Alright, I will lock that smile away…

[Me]  “Okay!

[James]  “Conner, I’ve seen the light.”

[Me]  “Who’s Conner?”

[James]  “No one important.”

[Me]  “…alright.  Oh, Mom.  Why did I not know that I had a brother?”

[Mom]  “I wanted to surprise you, so I kept it a secret.  Tehee~”

[Me]  “…”

[James]  *Sigh*  “That’s Mom for you…”

[Me]  “Yes, yes it is.”

James and I both sigh at the same time before looking at one another.  We both now share a connection, a connection of the understanding of our parents.

[Dad]  “So, who’s ready for lunch?”

[Me]  “I am!”

[James]  “I’m hungry as well!”

[Dad]  “Then let’s go!”

We enter the dining room and sit down.  I then eat the steak on my plate and get some more food.

[James]  “You are quite the eater aren’t you?”

[Me]  “Tehee~”

[Mom]  “Look honey, she takes after me!”

Huh?  Oh, I must of picked up Mom’s habit.  Opps.  That’s what happens when you spend a little over five years with someone.

[Dad]  “Yes, I see, but don’t you think its about time for that?”

[Me]  “That?”

[Mom]  “I don’t know if she’s ready…”

[Me]  “Ready for what?”

[Dad]  “I think she may be.”

[Me]  “What is ‘that’?!”

[James]  “I did that when I was five.”

[Me]  *Sniff*  *Sniff*  “Please don’t leave me out.”

[Mom]  “Hmm, your right… but still...”

Breath in.  Breath out.  Breath in.  Breath out.  Breath in.  Breath out…

[James]  “I will protect her, even from the others.”

[Me]  “O-others”

[James]  “Yeah, the others like us.”

…Now someone answers?  Why not earlier?!

[Me]  "So, What.  Is.  ‘That’.”

[Dad]  “It is your unsealing ceremony of course.”

Ah right, the unsealing ceremony…  HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT THAT IS?  What is being unsealed?!

[Me]  “And what exactly is being unsealed?”

[Dad]  “Your true race.”

[Me]  “…So we aren’t human?”

[James]  “Nope.”

[Me]  “What are we?”

[Dad]  “Demons.”

My mind short circuited.  I am sorry Dad, but for a second I thought that you said demons.  You didn’t actually say that, right?  Right?!

[Mom]  “More specifically we are a type of demon called devils.  No, not the Devil, but devils.  Confusing, I know.”

[Me]  “EHH?!  So we are demons?!”

[James]  “That’s right.”

[Dad]  “When you are unsealed you will gain a certain percent of element affinity in all your elements.  This is due to us being devils.  The higher the purity of your blood the higher percent you gain.  It is very hard for a devil, unsealed or not, to gain element affinity so this is the main way we gain some.  If you gain between 10% - 50% elemental affinities then you are classified as a common devil, 60% and 70% makes you an upper class devil, 80% and 90% makes you a noble devil, and 100% makes you a royal devil.  Your ancestry surprisingly does not matter when determining how pure your blood is, so two royals could give birth to a common and the reverse is true.”

I have a bad feeling about this…

[Me]  “How much attention would a noble receive if one was found?”

[Mom]  “Nobles are EXTREMLY rare, so one would attract a lot of attention.”

[Me]  “…”

[Mom]  “Are you alright.”

Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit.

[Me]  “I’m fine.  Just fine…”

I really don’t won’t to attract a lot of attention… I am not looking forward to the results.  Wait, aren’t I being to narcissistic if I were to think I would get a result that is extremely rare?  Wow, I guess I really don’t have much to be afraid of!  I hope that I won’t end up being a noble…

[Dad]  “Follow me Ivy.”

[Me]  “A-alright”

I follow Dad into our hallway when suddenly he stops, turns, and pushes our picture frame in and up.  Oh my gosh.  Since when was that there?  It was all spy like, kind of like what you would see in a spy movie back on Earth.  The stairs downward were not dusty or cobwebby though, so I guess it’s not as cool looking as it could be.

When we reach the last step the area around us became lighter and I saw a large magic circle on the ground.  Dad nudges me towards it and motions for me to sit down.  I sit in the middle of the formation and Dad start to pour a lot of mana into his hands.  He then pushes his hands down on the edge of the circle and it starts to glow.

The creepy writing starts to wiggle its way up my legs and covers my body.  In my opinion it must have looked like it was straight out of a horror movie.  Then I felt it.  The words, they… tickled.  By now I was having a really hard time trying not to laugh and scratch off my skin.  It itched, but not painfully so, just as if a thousand ants were marching a parade upon you.

The itchiness seemed to last for hours until it finished and I felt something within me snap and power starts to gush out of some hidden reserve.  I manage to contain most of it and I immediately go to check the results.

*Twitch*

N-no way.  I guess I got my wish?  I’m not a noble…

----------James’s POV---------

*Knock*  *Knock*

I knock on the door of my own house.  Never had I felt so nervous before entering my own abode.  I hear a muffled voice through the door, though I don’t know what it said.  Then the door in front of me was opened.  I look left and right, looking for my parents, and when I couldn’t find it I look down.  There I saw the most adorable yet somehow enchanting little girl I had ever seen.

I see Mom and some up and Mom offers the explanation.

[Mom]  “Fufufu… Ivy, this is your brother, James.  James, meet your sister, Ivy.”

[Me]  “Uhh… hi?”

Darn it.  I messed up.  She is just to adorable that I couldn’t speak properly.

[Ivy]  “Hi big brother!”

Ivy offered the most enchanting smile that I had ever seen in my life and I unintentionally took in a sharp breath.  After that our parents and I scolded her to never use it out of the house again.  She seemed somewhat depressed about it at first, but she seemed to be okay shortly after.  While we were eating dinner we all told Ivy about our true race and about the ceremony she would have to go through.  Dad took her to the basement and I decided to get some rest in my room.

Just what was I thinking?!  I can not start feeling that way towards my own sister!  I mean, yeah, I didn’t know her for five years, but it’s still wrong.  We also have a ten years difference between us.  I will not do that!  Although I will not let any other boy get to her, be it a poor man or a prince!

----------Ivy’s Dad’s POV----------

I took my precious daughter into the hallway so that we can do the ceremony.  I pause for effect, and then I open the secret door.  My daughter’s eyes glimmer when I first open it, and I feel as if I were the best dad in the universe.

For some reason her eyes dim down when we enter the stair case though.  It can’t be…  I left someplace dirty?!  I made sure to clean it yesterday, down to every speck of dust!  Oh no…

As we arrive at the magic circle I have her sit down.  I begin to pool my mana into the circle and I see the enchantment flow up onto my daughter.  Then, after a little while, her expression changes to a complex one, as if she were trying to hold something in.  I am so sorry.  The feeling is different for everyone, but right now she must be experiencing pain, why else would her expression be like that?!

After the entire process was over I came over to my daughter and I could see that she was checking her results.  Her eye gave her result away.  She seemed annoyed, so she must have gotten common.  Its okay, a goddess doesn’t need a high purity level in devils blood anyway.

I carry her upstairs and lay her on her bed.  She sleeps soundly and I go into my own bedroom to share the results.  I tell my wife and she agrees that our daughter is already enough.  We’re not expecting her to be perfect or to have something as absurd and extinct such as royal purity.  We are fine with how she is.
