Book Five: Chapter 5

Book Five: Chapter 5

The scent of chemicals and formaldehyde greeted Roger, Katina, Labda, and Cilla as they entered through the forensic lab's doors. The sterile area was well-lit by fluorescent lights, and there were different gadgets and tools strewn about.

A metal table in the center of the room held the Seraphim's corpse, which was draped in a white sheet. Dr. Carr was crouched over her, her numerous eyes scrutinizing the body.

She had a sleek, black exoskeleton and short, jet-black hair that was carefully brushed to the side. As she walks, her eight long, delicate legs skitter across the floor, each ending in sharp, pointed claws that click against the linoleum. Her numerous eyes were penetrating as she observed the Seraphim's corpse on the examination table, deep-set and gleaming in the lab's fluorescent illumination.

"Ah, officers," she remarked, raising her head from her work. Despite her strange appearance, she spoke in a friendly and professional tone. "I was about to summon you. This is the Seraphim's body that you discovered. It's an extraordinary specimen."

Roger took a step forward, his curiosity getting the best of him. "What exactly is a Seraphim?"

Dr. Carr stood up and stepped to the side, gesticulating towards the body. "The Seraphim are an angelic race that exists in a different dimension. They are recognized for their beauty and grace, and their wings are supposed to be formed of pure light. However, this one has solid wings."

She pulled the sheet off the corpse, pointing out various features of the Seraphim's naked anatomy as she spoke. "They have multiple hearts and a unique circulatory system. Their wings are incredibly delicate and require a constant supply of energy to maintain their form."

Katina leaned in for a closer look, her eyes wide with wonder. "I've never seen anything like it," she said.

Labda nodded in agreement. "It's incredible to think that there are other dimensions out there with creatures like this living in them."

Cilla crossed her arms, a more doubtful expression on her face. "But why was she in that cargo truck? Who would want to murder an angel?"

Dr. Carr raised her head. "Those are the questions we'll have to answer as our investigation continues. But for the time being, we must concentrate on examining the information we have and determining the cause of death."

Dr. Carr took up a knife and made a perfect incision down the center of the angel's chest, peeling back the skin to uncover the celestial being's inner workings. Roger averted his head, feeling uneasy as the spider woman discussed the function and composition of each organ.

"This is the heart, much larger than a human's, and it pumps divine energy that looks like yellow blood," she explained as she pointed to the huge organ in the center of the chest. "But as you can see, there is no blood."

Cilla leaned forward, her eyes wide with wonder as she observed the dissection with macabre fascination. But Roger couldn't handle it any longer and retched loudly as he walked over to the trash pail.

"How are you doing, boss?" Katina inquired, caressing his back.

Roger shook his head, wiping the back of his palm over his mouth. "I'll be fine, I promise. I only need a minute."

Labda, on the other hand, was preoccupied with something else. She knelt by the angel's wrist, pointing to two small puncture marks. "What do you think of these?"

Dr. Carr leaned in closer, her eight eyes scanning the wounds. "Ah, these I've seen before. These are blood-drawing needle marks."

When the word "blood" was mentioned, Roger's ears perked up. "Why would someone want to take the angel's blood?"

Dr. Carr claimed that, "Seraphim blood is a powerful substance capable of imbuing mortals with divine power or even creating new divine beings. It's highly sought after by certain factions seeking to use it for their own ends. Someone who possesses this angel's blood has the potential to become a god-like person."

Roger's mind was racing with options. Who and why could have taken the angel's blood? And what were they going to do with it?

"We need to find out who's behind this and stop them before it's too late," he replied firmly.

Dr. Carr agreed with a nod, her spider legs tapping on the linoleum floor. "I'll do everything I can to assist. But take care, my friends. Those who crave Seraphim blood will go to any length to obtain it."

The Cerberus women and Roger were standing in front of Chief Rosetta's desk, the office humming with activity outside. Rosetta leaned back in her chair, her hands clasped in front of her as she listened to the officers' conclusions.

"So, let me get this straight," Rosetta murmured, her pupils constricted. "You found an angel's body in Callum's truck, and someone took her blood?"

"Yes, Chief," Roger agreed with a nod. "Dr. Carr said that whoever has the angel's blood could use it as a weapon or become a god-like being."

Rosetta leaned forward, her face solemn. "That isn't good. We need to find the blood before whoever possesses it can profit from it."

"I agree," Katina remarked as she crossed her arms across her chest. "That's why we need to question Callum. He might be able to figure out who hired him to bring the angel's body into the city."

Rosetta gave a nod. "I concur. We need to figure out who is responsible for this. I'll prepare an interrogation room for you. Let's hope Callum is more helpful than his thugs were in the railway yard."

Roger couldn't dismiss the uneasy sensation that had settled in his stomach as the Cerberus women exited Rosetta's office. He knew whoever was behind this was dangerous, and he and his colleagues had to be cautious.

Callum sat handcuffed to a metal chair in the questioning room as Roger, Katina, Labda, and Cilla entered. The three heads of the chimera turned towards them, but he remained mute.

"Callum, we know you were hired to smuggle the angel's body into the city," Roger stated sternly. "If you don't tell us who hired you, the consequences will be severe."

Callum's heads gave out a harsh growl but remained silent.

"Fine," Katina murmured, her knuckles cracked. "We can do this the hard way."

The Cerberus ladies advanced, their muscles stiff and ready to pounce. But before they could act, Callum's goat head spoke up.

"I don't know who hired me," he admitted, dropping his goat head in defeat. "However, I gave the blood to Zombie Donnie, the leader of a zombie biker gang. He was supposed to deliver it in secrecy to the client."

Roger cocked his brow. "Zombie Donnie?" He chuckled softly. "That name sounds silly."

Labda stepped forward. "Do you know where we can find him?"

Callum shrugged. "I don't know his exact location, but I know he likes to hang out at bars."

“Which bar?” Katina shouted.

The chimera only answered with a shrug.

While standing in front of Chief Rosetta's desk, Roger, Katina, Labda, and Cilla exchanged glances. The Chief's gaze was fixed on them, waiting for their report.

Roger cleared his throat as he felt the Chief's attention on him.

"We interrogated Callum, Chief," he said. "He claims he has no idea who hired him to smuggle the angel, but he gave Zombie Donnie the blood. The head of the biker gang was supposed to deliver it to the client in secrecy."

Rosetta nodded, her face solemn. "Zombie Donnie," she whispered to herself. "That scumbag has been causing problems for us for a while."

"We know him, Chief," Cilla explained. "But we don't know which bars he frequents."

Rosetta leaned forward, her gaze darting between the officers. "How do you plan on finding him?" she inquired.

As they debated their alternatives, the room fell silent. Cilla's eyes suddenly lit up with realization.

"I remember a manticore woman named Tatiana," she reminisced. "She owns a bar in the monster ghetto district, which is frequented by criminals. Tatiana should be able to locate Donnie."

Chief Rosetta smiled and nodded. "Good thinking," she remarked. "However, be cautious. Cops aren't welcome in the monster ghetto district."

The officers nodded and walked out of the Chief's office.
