Chapter 121: Buckbeak

After finishing the morning's History of Magic class, Lin Yue went to the Great Hall with her fellow third-year Ravenclaw students for lunch.

As soon as she sat down and took a couple of bites, Hermione, Cho Chang, Marietta, and Penelope joined her one after another.

After taking a big sip of the pumpkin juice next to her, Hermione made a bit of a face. "Although pumpkin juice tastes good, drinking it for an entire school year really gets old. Can't Hogwarts provide any other drinks?"

Cho Chang smiled and patted Hermione on the shoulder to comfort her. "Aren't you all in third year now? After a while, you can go to Hogsmeade, and at the Three Broomsticks, you can drink a lot of other beverages."

"But you won't be able to drink alcohol until you're of age," Marietta added with a grin.

Hermione swallowed hard and, to be honest, she was a bit tempted. "Are there any carbonated drinks?"

Hearing Hermione mention carbonated drinks, the three senior students who had tried them during their vacation at the villa simultaneously swallowed.

That taste... it was indeed a bit enchanting, and just thinking about it made one crave it.

Unfortunately, "There are no carbonated drinks in Hogsmeade," Penelope shook her head. "It's a pure wizarding village, there aren't even Muggles, let alone Muggle drinks."

"Well," Hermione sighed, it seemed she would have to wait until the Christmas holiday to drink some at home.

Lin Yue swallowed the steak in her mouth, glanced at Hermione with a neutral expression, and then lowered her head again.

"What classes do you have this afternoon?" Cho Chang asked Lin Yue gently while adding some vegetables to her plate.

"Care of Magical Creatures," Lin Yue replied in a flat tone.

"That's a really interesting class," Penelope nodded, "at least it was very interesting when Professor Kettleburn taught it, and Hagrid's class should be just as good."

"Definitely," Hermione, one of Hagrid's friends, raised her eyebrows confidently. "Hagrid knows so many magical creatures in the Forbidden Forest; his class must be very interesting."

Lin Yue sat in her seat and opened her mouth, but looking at Hermione's trusting and excited expression, she ultimately decided not to voice her analysis.

Hagrid's personality is undoubtedly kind, but perhaps because of his size or his affinity for magical creatures, he might mistakenly believe that certain dangerous magical creatures are actually not dangerous. Coupled with his carefree nature and tendency to get easily excited, it’s likely that in this first class, Hagrid will showcase some magical creature that he finds fascinating but is actually quite dangerous for young wizards.

Although this is an outcome with an eighty-three percent probability, thinking about Hermione's earlier expression, Lin Yue swallowed her analysis and kept it to herself. There was no intention to speak up; after all, she would be attending the class too, so there was no need to worry. No matter what magical creature Hagrid brings out, she could always ensure the safety of Hermione and the other students.

After lunch, Lin Yue and Hermione returned to their dormitory to rest, while Penelope went to find Professor Flitwick to request a classroom. To teach Hermione, Cho Chang, and Marietta, she first needed a sufficiently large classroom—at least one where the three younger students wouldn’t disturb each other.

After hearing Penelope's request, Professor Flitwick nodded without hesitation. "Of course, Miss Penelope, you can continue to use the classroom where you held your study group activities last school year."

Professor Flitwick chuckled and said, "I've heard about what happened on the Hogwarts Express that day. Even I didn't expect that so many Ravenclaw students would be able to perform the Patronus Charm."

"That's quite a difficult spell."

Penelope smiled shyly, "We actually know quite a few spells, but most of the students don't like to show them off. With this time, we can do more research and learn more spells."

"That's a very pure Ravenclaw mindset, Miss Penelope," Professor Flitwick applauded, "I am proud of you all."

"Thank you, Professor."

Penelope smiled and bid farewell to Professor Flitwick, then returned to her dormitory to rest.

It wasn't until it was time for class that Lin Yue finally put down the book in her hands and walked out of the dormitory with Hermione.

With a monster book tucked under her right arm and Hermione linked to her left, Lin Yue arrived at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, her gaze cold as she looked towards the depths of the forest not far away.

She seemed to hear some digging sounds.

Based on the sound of the digging, could it be a unicorn? A Thestral? A Hippogriff?

Three possible options quickly flashed through Lin Yue's mind, if any of these three creatures were indeed the ones. The magical creatures that Hagrid was going to introduce to them in the first class were certainly interesting and quite dangerous. Especially the final possibility, the Hippogriff; Lin Yue's mind recalled information about the Hippogriff without any fluctuation. Undoubtedly, it was the most dangerous of the three possible creatures.

"Harry, Ron, good afternoon." Lin Yue politely nodded at Harry and Ron, and the two boys smiled in response. Then Ron made a pained face and looked at Hermione, "Hermione, can you spare some time to help me and Harry with our Potions homework?"

"We promise we just need you to check it; we definitely finished it." Harry nodded vigorously beside him, "Yes, yes, we’ve already completed it, we just want you to help us check it."

"Please," Ron clasped his hands together, "we really don’t want to be told off by Snape... Professor Snape."

"Alright," Hermione said with a wry smile, "I never said I wouldn’t help you check your homework; I just won’t let you copy it."

"Bring your homework to me during dinner tonight, and I’ll check it after dinner and give it back to you tomorrow morning."

"Okay." Harry and Ron replied in unison, and then they stopped bothering Lin Yue and Hermione, quietly moving to the side.

"I wonder what magical creature Hagrid will bring."

Hermione excitedly tiptoed and took a look into the Forbidden Forest.

Lin Yue mechanically extended her left hand to support Hermione and said expressionlessly,

"I just heard the sound of digging in the Forbidden Forest, so the three most likely magical creatures are unicorns, thestrals, and hippogriffs."

"Unicorns!" Hermione's eyes lit up for a moment, "I heard they really like girls; maybe we can even touch them."

"Thestrals are interesting too!"

"Right, hippogriffs..." Hermione paused for a moment, hesitating to speak, "Hagrid shouldn't be that reckless, right?"

"Letting us interact with hippogriffs in the first class."

"I'm not sure," Lin Yue shook her head, her tone flat, "there's too little information; I can only analyze these three possibilities."

"The likelihood of these three possibilities is equal, so we can't determine which one it is."

"Then let's not think about it!" Hermione giggled and tightened her grip on Lin Yue's left arm, "We'll naturally find out when class starts."

"Mm." Lin Yue nodded with a calm expression.

When the time came, Hagrid walked out of the Forbidden Forest slowly, "Welcome everyone, welcome to my Care of Magical Creatures class."

The Gryffindors clapped enthusiastically, and Lin Yue also clapped along, leading the way, which encouraged the members of Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff to join in with their applause as well.

Seeing this scene, the Slytherins, though reluctant, could only manage to clap half-heartedly. The incident with the Daily Prophet had not yet been addressed by the professors, especially Headmaster Dumbledore.

They couldn't afford to appear too out of place or too conspicuous right now, as they didn't know what the consequences might be.

Lin Yue held the Monster Book of Monsters in her right hand, watching as Hagrid walked up to stand in front of everyone.

"Oh, you all brought your books," Hagrid said with a cheerful nod, "but your books..."

Hagrid's gaze swept over the books tightly bound with belts, "Did none of you find a way to open them?"

A hint of disappointment appeared on his face, "Really, not a single person figured out how to open them correctly?"

Hagrid searched the crowd with his eyes until he spotted Lin Yue and Hermione, who were holding their Monster Books normally, without any belts binding them.

"Miss Lin Yue! Hermione! Your books aren't bound up; can you tell everyone how you managed to make them behave?"

Hagrid wore an encouraging smile, seemingly very much looking forward to Lin Yue and Hermione providing the answer he wanted.

Hermione bit her lip, feeling a bit troubled as she looked at Hagrid. Although she didn't know what answer Hagrid was looking for... she felt that the method Lin Yue had used to help her "tame" the monster book definitely wouldn't be the answer Hagrid wanted.

However, it was clear that Lin Yue wasn't overthinking it. Hagrid was a professor, and when a professor posed a question to her, she knew the answer, so she should respond straightforwardly.

"Just give the monster book a good beating, and it will behave."

Lin Yue said this sentence in a flat voice, and almost the next second after she spoke, all the little wizards' monster books in the room stopped struggling simultaneously. The monster books in her and Hermione's hands trembled violently for a moment. It seemed to recall the fear of being stepped on by the terrifying claw Velociraptor that Lin Yue had transformed in Diagon Alley, with its sharp claws resting on the cover of the book.

"Beat it, beat it up?!" Hagrid's expression was dazed as he widened his eyes, then he somewhat flusteredly waved his hands.

"No, we can't, we can't treat them like that."

"You just need to gently stroke their spines," Hagrid said as he lifted the book in his hand, slowly running his large fingers over the spine of the monster book, "and then they will calm down."

Sure enough, the next moment, the monster book in Hagrid's hand quieted down, slowly opening and quietly collapsing in his hand.

"That's amazing! Who would have thought that we should stroke the spines of the books that want to bite us to death?"

Draco couldn't help but make a sarcastic remark, but he still obediently ran his hand over the spine of the book. Lin Yue also lowered her head, looking at the monster book in her hands. Although it remained quiet, she still followed Hagrid's advice and gently stroked its spine with her hand.

Then she raised her head and seriously nodded at Hagrid, "Sorry, Professor Hagrid, I shouldn't treat my textbook like that. I will be more careful in the future and won't be as impulsive as before."

"Oh, it's, it's nothing, you don't have to," Hagrid said, waving his hands in a more flustered manner. He really didn't expect Lin Yue to apologize to him for this matter.

"It's fine, Hagrid, you can continue with the class."

Hermione gently spoke to help Hagrid diffuse the situation, while also reaching out to pull Lin Yue into her embrace.

"Relax, Lin Yue. No one will blame you for this. Just take it easy in class."

Lin Yue nodded without any change in her expression, "Okay."

Hagrid took a deep breath and smiled again, "Today, I have prepared a very special and interesting magical creature for you. I think you should get to see it."

"You all must see it."

After saying that, he eagerly turned and walked into the woods, looking quite excited.

A vague premonition surfaced in Lin Yue's mind; she felt that her previous guesses about what this magical creature could be were coming to fruition.

The possibility of her third guess was slowly increasing.

A roar echoed from the woods, causing the young wizards to collectively take a step back, and even Lin Yue was pulled back a bit by Hermione.

Listening to the roar in her ears, Lin Yue was completely certain that the magical creature Hagrid brought to the first class was indeed her third guess, the Hippogriff.

A few seconds later, a tall "beast" was led out by Hagrid. This beast had the head of an eagle, the body of a lion, and its two front paws resembled eagle talons.

Hermione gasped beside Lin Yue, "Merlin above! Hagrid actually brought out a Hippogriff in the very first class."

"This is a very dangerous magical creature!"

Lin Yue felt Hermione's grip on her left arm tighten a bit more, and she slightly turned her head to look at Hermione.

"It's okay, I can handle a Hippogriff."

Hermione paused for a moment at Lin Yue's words, and after two seconds, she understood that Lin Yue meant she didn't need to be afraid because she could handle a Hippogriff and would be able to protect herself.

"Yeah," Hermione smiled brightly and gently rubbed against Lin Yue's shoulder, "Lin Yue is really amazing."

Lin Yue's ears turned slightly red, but she maintained a calm expression as she looked at the Hippogriff being led by Hagrid.

Hagrid patted the Hippogriff beside him, "This young fellow is called Buckbeak. You might have seen or heard about him in books; he is a Hippogriff."

"This is a very proud creature, it would rather die than be humiliated, and it will only treat beings with kindness if they are recognized by its etiquette."

"They will bow to it, and if your greeting is acknowledged, it will return the gesture, but if it does not return the greeting..."

Haige paused for a moment, "Then you need to slowly back away and get out of its sight."

"Alright," he said, patting his hands big as cattail leaf, "Who wants to try it first?"
