Chapter 18

Dawson couldn’t afford to get in trouble in his other classes, so he hoped Felix would understand why he wasn’t there. But he made it his mission to find Felix during their lunch. He walked into the cafeteria; that’s when it clicked with Dawson. He had never sat with Felix for lunch. He had sat with his other friends, or they just went outside to eat. Dawson glanced around the bustling room, looking for his quite nervous friend, that's until he saw a familiar mop of brown, messy hair lying face down on a table in the far corner.

“Felix! I didn’t know you sat over here.” Dawson acknowledged as he sat down next to Felix.

Felix flinched as he didn’t expect to hear Dawson’s voice. But then he just let out an annoyed sigh and turned his head away from Dawson. Felix refused to look at Dawson for two reasons, he was angry at him, and Dawson’s face made his wrist throb with pain.

“Hey.” Dawson leaned over, shaking Felix’s shoulder a bit, “You ok?”

“Yep,” Felix said, a bit too aggressively for Dawson's liking.

“...Is it about yesterday…?” Dawson’s body tensed up.

“No!” Felix insisted with a loud sigh, “It's just… uh… I don’t know… Why weren’t you there…”

“Where?”

“Science! After class…” Felix’s voice got quiet at the end of his sentence.

“Oh! I couldn't come because I got caught sleeping in class. I got... de.. tension…” Dawson immediately remembered why he was looking for Felix in the first place.

“That’s it?” Felix lifted his head up with a smile, “I thought you hated me beca-”

“Felix shut up for a second.”

Felix did precisely that.

“I’m cutting the story down a lot, so bear with me. I had a dream about Ms. Ann; she was a monster in it. So.. she is a monster. Probably some sort of spy.”

Felix stared at Dawson with big, confused eyes and said, “Huh?”

“No, not ‘huh,’ Felix! How do you not understand? That lady is a monster!” Dawson glared.

“But… how? She’s so nice? And she looks… I don’t know… human? Normal? Pretty? Definitely not like that monster.” Felix stammered.

“I know I’m smart and all but, I don't have all the answers.” Dawson shrugged.

Felix thought back to just a couple of classes ago when he happened to run into Ms. Ann, the apparent monster.

“This is insane… Do you think she is trying to kill us or something?” Felix rubbed his face.

“If she tries anything, I will be there,” Dawson said coolly.

“...K,” Felix mumbled, cringing at what Dawson had just said.

“But… I’m hungry. We can discuss this after school; I’ll get us some food.” Dawson replied, walking to the lunch line.

“Uh… yeah… ok.” Felix shrugged, flopping his head back on the table.
