Chapter 48: Nebel's Pillow

Chapter 48: Nebel's Pillow

Bö and Lucca had a mandatory field trip today but Nebel and Mitchell were still free so while Nebel dropped them off at their school, other than that all he did was go back home and re-enter CAIFELIT.

Mitchell on the other hand took the time that Nebel was gone to go into his room...

Jumping down on top of his bed, Mitchell hugs his body pillow and takes a deep breath through her nose. She didn’t really like his body pillow... it had a picture of gaming character in a sexy position... but she absolutely loved the smell of Nebel that permeated it.

She had timed how long it took Nebel to return and she would be back out of his room right before he returned... even she thought this was a bit stalker-y but she couldn’t help herself...

“Oh lord Nebel... I love you so much...” she mutters into the side of the body pillow before letting go of it. “Hmmm... should I follow Andrea’s plan?”

Sitting up on Nebel’s bed she looks around his room, steeling her determination. Looking over the room she sees the posters, books and hardware Nebel had apparently been collecting for years and finding the right spot, she places the small can, Stephanie had prepared for Andrea’s plan.

“Tonight is the night...” she thinks turning red and leaving the room.

Calling them up, Mitchell invites Andrea and Stephanie over for a sleep over to finish the initial preparations and runs to her room to set up some beds...

Having returned home, Nebel greets Mitchell who tells him about a sleep over she is going to have before he returns to his room... standing in the middle of it, Nebel flares his nostrils, and takes in a heavy dose of Mitchell’s perfume...

“That girl needs to learn how to hide her presence...” he thinks to himself while sitting down on his bed “I wonder why she came in this time...” looking around the room he notices a few things out of order... but nothing that wasn’t out before he left...

“Hmm... I guess I would have to ask her to find out... that would be awkward...”

Nebel lies down and slips on his choker to enter the game, turning it on, he appears in his virtual space which was once more just as he usually left it. The update events changes seem to have been only a temporary change, to which you could bet he was relieved, you wouldn’t believe how much time he spent making it just how he liked it...

Walking over to the CAIFELIT corner, Nebel picks up the bandages hanging on a peg on the wall and the world of the game starts appearing in front of his eyes one line at a time, the lines were neither horizontal or vertical and instead appeared as if he was having bandages taken off of his eyes to let him see.

He had given the technicians and soldiers various orders and he was glad to see that they had been fulfilled but now they were just resting around his sick bed.

“Oh hey Nebel!” Claire says jumping up from a newly made wooden lawn chair “What’s up? Need anything Oh lord of ours!?” she says sarcastically.

Gone was her and the other technician’s dress uniforms, instead the technician’s were wearing coveralls and Claire was wearing tight jeans and a pink shirt that had “Kiss My Ass” splashed across it in black.

Nebel looking around for the guards, noticed that most of them weren’t there and the few that were, were sitting around a camp fire. Claire noticing his glance fills him in on the current situation “The guards that are taking the medics back have reached the city and should soon be returning. As for the rest they are out mapping out the valley’s geography as per your request!”

“Ok, ok good.” Nebel says looking directly at Claire “What about Rosa?”

Claire points behind him and says “She did some maintenance on that frozen caveman and then set up a tent and went to sleep...”

“Ok, I want you to... check out the mining and smelting equipment to find out what needs to be done, while someone sets up a large tent.”

Claire salutes him jokingly before sending off the other technician, after which, she scavenges some poles from the ruins and she sets about setting up their shelter.

At the same time, Nebel grabs a few scraps of paper and writes up some rough plans for the rebuilding of this mining town. Hours pass by and Nebel’s short term plans slowly come to fruition, after she pitched the large army tent over the square, Nebel told Claire to report to the council about his victory.

The response he got from them was a list of things they wanted from him as the new owner of the valley and what they would give him if he managed it.

If the following requirements are met, the valley under your command shall receive:

-Fifty thousand settlers (to be sent in groups of five hundred when your community can support them)

-Payment for the construction of a military base as well as up to five hundred recruits (soon as the first two requirement have been fulfilled)

-An urban development specialist (as soon as the first two requirements have been fulfilled)

-And as per your personal request at an earlier time, one set of factory fabrication plans and basic tools (the moment all of the basic requirements are fulfilled)

The requirements while easy to understand are also rated at extremely hard to accomplish but here they are and best of luck to you, Hero Nebel

-Total destruction of all possible threats contained within the valley or acceptable containment

-Either the destruction of or heavy fortification of the northern pass

-Fully functional water filtration system, sufficient energy production to maintain its function and supply at least lighting adequate electricity to any inhabitants (includes the first five hundred settlers, magic based power source un-acceptable)

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

-Installation of a satellite array (parts will be provided and in the case of the old one being salvageable, the parts to repair it and the recourses saved from the salvage will be sent instead)

-Any resources obtained must be sent south to the three cities, as long as you don’t need them for expansion occurring in the next month’s time or currently functioning production (payment will be at regular market value)

He needed a few things to manage these, but he didn’t really think that it would be so hard.

The technicians’ reports had come in but the one on the mining equipment wasn’t so great, all of the machinery was oxidized and some were even utterly destroyed or had seized but they had reported that a few had been in storage inside of a few old mines and were still functional.

That was pretty good, since Nebel hadn’t actually expected any of them to work... he gave out the order to them to modify two of the surviving four mining cranes and had them bring out one of the water pumps and minor filtration systems out of one of the less important mines.

This work was still ongoing since it was a pretty big job but once they were done with these two, he would be able to start construction and he would only need some more filters to be able to get clean water.

On the other hand, the three men that had been escorting the medics back, had nearly returned and they were bringing a truck loaded with some supplies that the council had decided to send as well as the plans of all of the equipment known to have been set up in the valley before its abandonment.

The other seven that weren’t protecting the technicians, had finished clearing out the town’s ruins, both above ground and the freakishly large sewers. After that they had mapped out the positions of any caves, mines and features of the valley. Now they were slowly clearing out any mine that appeared to be inhabited as well as watching the northern pass.

Nebel’s trap alone apparently didn’t completely qualify as a fortification, since it relied on them having metal but for now it was holding back the goblin’s quite nicely, though it was only collecting metal scraps now since the technician’s hadn’t been able to set it up like before.

Instead they had coupled it with his first trap and it now dropped, the goblins pulled along with their metal, off of a cliff... so at least it was still killing everything...

Nebel’s medically induced paralysis was slowly weakening and when he mentioned it to the last medic, the man just told him that when it wore off he would be well enough to walk, but also that he should still take it easy.

Mitchell had finished her job and reported in over a communication link with the adventurer’s office, she couldn’t receive any physical rewards this way, but it did allow her to take any new jobs that had been posted and inform them of success in case of there being a time limit, without having to go all the way back.

The office told her about this feature a while ago and even told her that they had a warehouse for un-claimed rewards but that they would only be kept for a month.

Having gone outside the last of the infested caves to make her report, Mitchell Heads back down into the facility and after a few minutes of walking reaches the control room.

She had a suspicion about the collapsed tunnels and with a few minutes of fiddling with the control panel she managed to confirm them and copy the whole map onto her display as a three dimensional wire frame.

The other four paths lead to some interesting constructs; the first of them was just another path and appeared to head in the opposite direction of the three paths she had previously explored, but the other three lead to an elevator shaft, the bottom of which wasn’t included on the map, what appeared to be a living area and some other larger rooms and a large cavern which gave her no clue as to its use.

Too bad they were blocked... she wanted to explore them... “Lord Nebel will mostly likely just fix them.” She mutters to herself as she leaves the room and heads to the path that would take her to the exit nearest to the pass.

She wasn’t in any particular hurry, but she couldn’t really do much more here and leaving right away couldn’t hurt Nebel’s plans. Squeezing through the crack that had made the door kind of useless, Mitchell digs up a few bushes and replants them in front of it, just in case anyone else happens to walk around there.

Finished with her amateur camouflage, Mitchell heads up through the pass to meet up with Nebel. Along the way, two of his soldiers, who were carrying to large backpacks full of supplies each, conscript her onto help and send her back to carry a bag of her own.

Once more at the passes entrance, this time knowing it’s there, Mitchell finds the truck loaded with supplies and tells the guard the code word, taking her to the back, he opens it up and reveals the huge pile of food and water... this was going to take a while...
