Prologue - Lillith gets hit by a truck

Note - This story started from a prompt by u/AnduinX, Dawn of a Planeswalker. In this chapter, I use their words from the prompt, but it is somewhat necessary to understand the rest of the story. Credit for the prompt belongs to the original author, not to me!

Lillith

I hunch my shoulders against the driving rain as I pedal my bike even faster. I just want to get back to my dorm room and change into dry clothes and watch a show until I fall asleep. I’m tired from work and soaked from the rain because I don’t have a car, just my bike. I barely glance both ways before starting across the road. I’m close enough to campus and there’s hardly any traffic out right now. I hear screeching tires and my head shoots up as I see a semi-truck barreling towards me. I could have sworn it wasn’t there a minute ago. ‘It probably has pop for the vending machines.’ I think, the panic driving all else from my head but the sight of the Pepsi logo, before I see nothing at all.

I open my eyes slowly, expecting to feel waves of pain, to see a white sterile hospital room, or perhaps even the pearly gates of heaven. What I do not expect is for a blue tentacled creature to be poking my cheek.

“Where, where am I? Why am I not dead? Wait, am I dead? Did you bring me here?” I ask as my brain slowly catches up to my surroundings.

The blue creature makes a croaking burble that I somehow understand is a chuckle.

“Me? No, I did not bring you here. You did that all by yourself,” they say. I can understand them in the same way I understood their laugh. Not like they are speaking English, just that they are… understandable.

“I, I don’t understand. There was a truck. It hit me. At least, I think it did.” I raise my arms carefully, as if moving too fast might make all the pain I should be feeling come rushing in. There’s no pain. The blue creature laughs again and shivers their eyestalks. Again, I understand this to be the equivalent of shaking my head.

“No, you brought yourself here, I am certain of it. I can presume that you are no ordinary human, but rather a planeswalker. Often such an ability lies slumbering until someone activates it for you or a traumatic event causes it to rise to the surface. It seems to be the latter case for your situation.” The blue creature hums a thoughtful melody as they look me over.

“Yes... There's no doubt about it. You must be a planeswalker - a divine entity with the power to travel infinite worlds! You are lucky to have arrived at this place. Newly awakened planeswalkers often find themselves in an unfamiliar world without any knowledge of what they are or what they are capable of. But, l can teach you the basics and perhaps even send you back to your home world.” I nod eagerly.

“Please, I want to go home again. I, I don’t know what's happening or why I’m here, but I’m just an ordinary girl.”

The creature sighs. “Unfortunately, that is not the case anymore, and that may be a bit of a problem if you want to return to your old life. If not concealed, planeswalkers give off a unique energy signature that can be tracked by various enemies. Demons and elite thieves are common threats in magic worlds, but even non-magical worlds may have their dangers. I will touch on that topic more in the future, but for now, I should explain your current state.

You may not have noticed, but your body has already changed into your preferred human form and age. You are biologically immortal. Your strength. speed, and endurance are peak human for your apparent age and body type. Your natural regeneration allows you to regrow internal organs and lost limbs in just a day. Smaller wounds heal in minutes to hours. Lost blood is rapidly replenished.” They continue talking but I can’t focus. ‘I’m a what?’ It’s too much to comprehend. They seem to notice and break off their speech.

“I’m sorry, I shall simplify, yes?” I nod, slowly. They hum for another few minutes, then say,

“All planeswalkers share a few key abilities, such as the ability to jump between habitable worlds. You have already discovered that one. It's how you arrived here, after all. You should have other more unique abilities as well. Pardon my intrusion…”

I freeze as a strange sensation spreads through my body. Before I can protest, the strange feeling subsides and I’m able to move again.

“I apologize for stepping into your mind, but I assure you it was necessary.” They say, seeming to have no discomfort themselves. “You see, when a planeswalker dies, they are left with three options. They can hover around as a disembodied spirit for a few years until they acquire enough energy to generate a new body for themselves, they can reincarnate, or they can choose to move on to the next plane of existence. It appears you've chosen the path of reincarnation in your last life. Your powers can never be lost, stolen, or sealed. As a divine entity you are immune to such things. So, whatever powers you had in your previous life should still be with you, just waiting to be rediscovered by you. This is important, because you knew how to use your powers in your previous life. So, if I were to restore your memories of that life you should be able to use them again.”

I hesitate. It’s a lot to take in, but if I can’t return home anyways…

“Worry not, I will not restore anything that would infringe on who you currently are. I will only bring the tiniest fraction of your memories to the surface. Specifically memories that involve the usage of your powers, divine blessings, and your pact companion. Oh, and don't worry about your past life coming back to haunt you. The issue that drove you to reincarnate has been resolved.” They say, reading my body language. I nod slowly, and they do an impression of a smile with the gelatinous feelers that are around their mouth.

“Now then, I will be stimulating your memory. Let us find out what powers you have hidden away, shall we?”
