28 - Trigger - Zorro - Rescue

Twila and I stand in front of the door. She glances at me hesitantly, and I move until my mouth is nearly touching her ear.

"I'm going to try to mentally speak to Lillith again. Just stay quiet." She nods and sniffs quietly, then steps back.

‘Lillith?’ I push hard, and I feel a squeaked,

‘Yes!’ in return from her.

‘Where are you?’ I ask. There’s silence for a few seconds, then she starts thinking almost faster than I can keep up.

‘I, I don’t know, they knocked me out and brought me somewhere and then they left me tied up for a while and then brought me to a council, like, of magic users and they call themselves the council of ten because there's ten of them and they want me to help them make the little jeweled bugs that we see everywhere, and the bigger metal animals too and it involves magic and they worship planeswalkers and think they are gods and I haven't told them I’m one yet and I don't know where I am but there's a mind reader or something that was with me and now she's gone but I’m in a room by myself and I think they're eating lunch.’

‘Twila and I are in a building that I couldn’t remote view, and I'm standing outside a door that has a single magic trace behind it. I want you to knock, telling me if it's you.”

I hear a muffled thump from inside, like something gets knocked over and I take a deep breath. I hear a knocking a moment later, and I let out a sigh of relief. We found her.

‘Ok, I have you, now just to get in the door… You should move away from it.’ I take a deep breath and let go of my connection with her so my head doesn’t ache quite so much, then punch the door after enhancing my strength. It breaks into pieces with a single punch, and I’m glad I told her to move, as the wood shatters and some of it flies across the room. I step inside and see Lillith near one wall. She runs to me and hugs me tightly. I hug her back and kiss her forehead.

“You found me, thank you so much, I missed you, I, I, thank you…” She is gasping these words gratefully and I hold her for a moment longer.

“We have to go, that door was probably spelled in some way to keep you in, and might tell your mind-reading friend we’re here. And if we don’t have to fight, I don't want to.” I say and she nods, still clinging to me, then stands up again slowly. I feel a jolt stab through my skull as Lillith sends me an image of some kind, and I quickly realize it’s a partial map of the building. I add it to my own, and have a pretty clear idea of where we need to go. I lead us out of the room and back down the stairs. I halt at the bottom when I see an elderly man with silver hair standing there. I draw Justice, ready to fight our way out. I see Lillith shrink back, and I step in front of her, willing to protect her with my life if necessary. The man's eyes go wide before he summons a flame to his palm. It almost makes me laugh at how pitiful it looks, but he flings it at us and I easily duck out of the way. I take a few steps forward, raising Justice. Then, from the corner of my eye, I see Lillith. She steps forward beside, me, laying her hand on my arm, as her body starts to shimmer. A beacon of magical and planeswalker energy hits me, and I realize she’s dropped her concealment power. The man in front of us gasps and takes a few steps back, bumping into the wall behind him. I hesitate, looking at her, slightly confused. It makes sense, however, when I see the silver-haired man. He seems to be having trouble speaking, but he quickly falls face-first on the ground. I turn and raise my eyebrows at Lillith and see she has morphed her wings and halo and her whole body is shimmering slightly. She gives me a playful shrug.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“Told you, they worship planeswalkers.” She says.

I smirk, drop my own conceal, and raise my left hand, a ball of arcane energy sparkling in it, just as several more people come running around the corner and see us. They are dressed in a rainbow of bright colors, and one of them comes closer to us than the others before dropping to her knees.

“Goddess?” She gasps, staring at Lillith. Lillith takes a step towards her, not saying anything. The woman gapes at her, then bows her head to the floor. “I’m so sorry Goddess. I, we, had no idea. Your signature, it didn’t show.” Lillith stares at her for a moment, her face hard. I’m rather surprised when she speaks, it sounds regal.

“That’s because it was a test.” Lillith says. “You were, and still are, very close to failing. In the future, you must not kidnap magic users. You are to instruct them and offer them a position in your organization, but no harm is to be done to them or to the non-magical people of this world. Do you understand me?” The woman nods vigorously.

“We do, Goddess. We apologize for mistreating people and swear ourselves to the conduct you have declared.”

“Very well. You may rise. Do not fail this test, I am giving you another chance.” Lillith says, walking towards the woman and touching her lightly on the shoulder as she looks up. The woman nods and I can see she has tears in her eyes. I carefully school my face to not give away my amusement at watching Lillith play god to them. She turns to me and holds her hand spread out at her waist, a signal to stand down. I let the ball of magic vanish, but still hold Justice.

‘We should leave. I don’t really wanna be a goddess longer than I gotta…’ Lillith sends me.

‘Agreed, we cleaned out the room, considering we didn’t bring much, so we can jump anytime.’ Lillith gives a slight nod, then turns back to the colorfully dressed people.

“I will grant all of you the privilege of seeing us leave this world, but remember we will be back. Stay true to the code I have given, and remember that as I was unknown to you once, so may be the other gods and goddesses. Be kind to all you come across.” She says, then holds her hand out for me to take. I morph Justice away, to the amazement of the council, and take the two girls' hands in mine, then look up. I can feel Lillith bless me quickly, then I jump us to the next world.
