We waited in line to enter the city and eventually it was our turn. A guard looked us over and checked the cargo quickly before speaking up. "Adventurer's ID's please". He took all of our ID's but when it got to me I smiled awkwardly and said "I don't really have an ID. I'm not registered as an adventurer. I was planning on doing that when I got here". The guard looked at me closer and then sighed while pointing to a blue crystal embedded on a stone pillar at waist height. "Scan your mana signature so we can see if you have any criminal record, then we will let you in after giving you a temporary ID". I walked over and put my hand on the crystal and inserted mana, which shined bright blue for a second before going dim again. I noticed the crystal had some small cracks in it but didn't think too much of it. They checked it over, and one guard had a very shocked look, which then went to fear. They waved us through and gave me a temp ID but I noticed the one giving me the ID was shaking like a leaf.
I walked back to the carriage and ignored mr.shakey and we head into the city. The place was as I remembered it when I played the game for the most part, other than a few things such as different store names and other small things. It was a very lively place with people walking all over the place to where ever they are heading. We got to a building with a sign over the doorway labelled Dokam's Wares. Rather plain naming sense but I had an equally bad naming sense so I didn't say anything.
"Aright this is it for the trip. You 2, thanks for the escort and here's your pay, 5 Silver as we agreed upon". Dokam then turned towards us and said "The extra help was great, so you have my thanks for that. If ya ever have time then you should stop by my store and buy some stuff. I got all the best spices, trinkets and anything else you could ever want!" He laughed his usual gut-buster of a laugh and led his carriage to the back of his store while waving goodbye.
"I'll head to the adventurer's guild to get an ID, but what inn are you guys going to bunk at?". They continued walking and thought for a bit before Ronia spoke up. "We'll be over at the Keeper's Paradise, it's a good inn and relatively cheap too. Just ask the adventurer guild's staff for instructions and they'll point you in the right direction. First thing's first though. I'm heading to the bathhouse to clean off. Later boys!". Ronia ran off down the street while waving at us and the other 2 just chuckled and said their farewell's before walking off as well.
I continued walking and soon saw the adventurer's guild in its full glory. A massive 6 storey building made of reinforced Ironwood. There were adventurer's milling about, and I also saw 2 guards outside the entrance in full plate Spell-Iron. They turned out to be golems upon closer inspection and were scanning the crowd for any troublemakers. "God I hope the usual trope of 'Bully the weak new guy' doesn't happen." I said to no one in particular as I walked into the adventurer's guild, but with the 2 guards outside I doubted anyone would bother causing a scene.
The inside was grand as I remembered it with a large chandelier with glowing mana stones instead of candles and the rich decor you usually expect in some nobles mansion. There were yet more Spell-Iron golems lining the walls and other places in the guild, constantly scanning the crowd for troublemakers. One poor sap pulled his dagger out to threaten a receptionist for some reason, but was promptly beaten to a pulp by a nearby golem and literally thrown out of the guild. That made people either balk in fear or laugh at the guys misfortune.
I walked over to an available receptionist who smiled and said "Welcome! Are you hear to take or turn in a request?". I responded with "Actually I'm here to register as a new adventurer". she then handed me a form and asked me to fill it out. It was basic info such as your name, age, class, any special skills or magic you have and some other info. I quickly filled it out and gave it back to her. She looked it over and then smiled in a rather menacing way.
"Sir please do not lie on your form. Embellishing your achievements and stats are not allowed. Especially faking your class. A level 11 Grand Archmage? That's the craziest lie I've seen so far!" She started chuckling as she pulled out a crystal similar to the one that was used at the gate but on a smaller scale. She pat the crystal as she wiped tears from her eyes from laughing too hard.
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Alright I want you to use the crystal to scan yourself, so we can see what class you really are". I shrugged and placed my hand on the crystal but as I inserted mana the crystal cracked and stopped glowing so I removed my hand quickly, hoping it wouldn't explode or something. The receptionist looked at the results that were printed onto a piece of paper and was surprised. "Y-Your stat's were mostly cut off and unreadable. This only happens when the stats or class are too high or some ability is preventing us from reading it. I'll have to talk with my supervisor". She ran off to find someone to talk to, leaving me all alone with nothing to do.
After a couple of minutes, she returned and told me to follow her. We walked a bit farther in and up some stairs to the 6th floor. We stopped at a door that said Guildmaster's Office. "What the heck am I doing here?".
"The guildmaster will explain it further" was my only response. With that the receptionist left me alone standing in front of the guildmasters office.
With nothing left to do I opened the door and walked in. "Hello? Apparently you wanted to see me-Woah you look ripped old man.".
What I saw was an old man with a dress shirt and black pants. His shirt was bulging with muscles that were barely being contained within, and he had a black chevron mustache. He was starting to bald a little bit and his hair colour was brown with spots of gray showing up. He looked rather mad at me for calling him old, with a vein bulging on his forehead. He stood up from his desk and yelled "Listen here you little shit! I ain't old yet! It's just from stress, I haven't even past 68 yet! Who're you calling old!". The force of his yell sent me flying through the door and implanted into the wall.
"Y-yeah, that's gonna hurt tomorrow". I said as I pried myself off the wall and dusted myself off. By then the old man had calmed down and he sat back down. "Haah, sit down. Sorry for that outburst. But I ain't old ye hear?!" He stared at me for a good second before continuing. "The reason why you were called here is because of a report from the gatehouse, and the fact that you broke our scanning crystal. The gatehouse guards said you scanned and it labelled your class as Grand Archmage. Is this true that you are a Grand Archmage?" At this, he gave off an intense pressure and stared at me. I tried to think of ways to avoid telling the truth because it seemed like he would cause me a lot more trouble than it was worth, but the evidence was piled against me.
I caved and said "Yes it is true it said I am a Grand Archmage, but before you ask, no you shouldn't expect me to be as powerful as one. I have been through certain circumstances and therefore am effectively no longer a Grand Archmage". I mixed in some lies to make sure he doesn't do something annoying like handing me over to the mage guild to help them research spells or some other nonsense. I really can't be bothered to do any of that, it seems too damn annoying.
The Guildmaster kept staring at me for a while but then sighed and said "I understand. Sorry for all the trouble we caused today". He got up and handed me something. It was a guild card with my name and picture on it. I was labelled as a Low G rank, the lowest rank possible to get and what people usually start at. He looked at me and said "You came to register as a guild member right? I assume you know the whole speel of ranks go from G to SSS and each rank is divided into low, middle and high right?". I nodded so he continued talking." I won't bother you with the rest of the information, but if you do want any help or other information about anything head to the receptionist or look at the information guides that are sold for 3 copper each. I look forward to seeing you continue to work at the Adventurer's Guild". I got up and started leaving, thinking about how he was very annoying but hella buff. I wonder what his rank was before he became the Guildmaster?
As I was heading down the stairs I heard the Guildmaster mutter "A Grand Archmage eh? Wonder what he has up his sleeve. Hehehe I can't wait to mess with- I mean help him out. It'll make my job a lot less boring." I heard some shuffling and then " Bah back to paperwork it is, the one thing I hate".
I kept going down the stairs and said "Glad I got out of that mess without being sent to do something very annoying. That Guildmaster seems like he's going to be annoying to deal with. Seriously, what's such a buff old man doing as the Guildmastrer. He should just reti-" Before I could finish my sentence I was sent flying through the wall and out of the guild onto the street in front, followed by a yell "WHO YOU CALLING OLD HUH?!".
