Chapter 20: Infested Sewers

I nodded my head and said "Yeah most likely the goblins and ogres here is the work of the corrupted mage. The question is when and why they infested the sewers with Monster Summoning Crystals."We were fighting the group of goblins and ogre that we had spotted at the end of the hall. Ray was finishing off a goblin with a clean swing to the neck, swiftly decapitating the goblin when he replied to me. "Who knows when they infested this place but all I know is that they probably have one goal in mind to be placing summoning crystals down here." I fired another ice shard at a goblin that Herald had aggroed, finishing it off and then replied to Ray. "They probably want to invade the city. This isn't good. Not good at all. Who knows how many of these things are down here by now, not to mention all of the Horbrot's that have popped up due to the increase in food. We really need to get out of here and tell the guild. And fast"

Ray simply nodded and we made it our goal to leave as fast as possible but there were more goblins and ogres than we had expected since the sewers were positively infested with them. An ogre roared in pain as it was taken down by Ronia's arrows and we were about to finish off the last goblin when there was a loud series of roars and screeches. Ronia looked at the direction the screeches came from and yelled out at us. "Shit That can't be good! There's probably more on the way, we need to move!" Not a moment later a horde of goblins came swarming around the corner, with wooden clubs waving in the air and screeching like mad. Along with the damn goblins there were a lot of ogres bringing up the rear. There was 1 ogre for every 20 goblins or somewhere around that, I couldn't tell but it was a lot of them.

I stopped using ice shards since it was far better at single target but not good at multiple targets. For that I could use Mana Drain but I was with the group and obviously didn't want to reveal that i'm a necromancer so that was out. I kept thinking as we plowed through the horde of goblins when I had an idea. "Cover me for a bit! I'm going to try and slice the goblins to shreds with a spell." I yelled to the group while backing up from the frontlines. I started charging my mana into a Lesser tier spell I knew but had been unable to use before. "I probably leveled up enough to be able to use it. Speaking of level up's I really need to check my stats when I have more time. It's been forever since I last checked them."

It took me about 30 seconds to finish charging enough mana into the spell and by then the group had cut around 83 goblins and 5 ogres down, but the fatigue was seriously starting to kick in. Ray was moving more sluggishly and Herald was huffing for breath but didn't complain and continued to hack and slash while drawing aggro. Ronia was tired as well but it was mostly from lack of mana. She had been slinging spells and bow skills for a while in an effort to keep the ogres at bay and kill them quickly. Around half of the monsters were dead when I had gathered enough mana and cast the spell as fast as possible and unleashed its might upon the horde in front of me.

Fortunately it worked without a hitch. If the spell hadn't worked I would have just launched the ice shard blast instead with my accumulated mana but it worked out which was good. I yelled at the party "I'm done chanting so be careful and stay out of its way!" With that I launched my [WindBlade Stream] spell and dozens of scythe shaped blades of wind were sent flying from where I aimed my palms, streaking forwards and cutting everything in its path down. The party had got the hint with my warning and moved to the sides of the tunnel as much as they could but even then I tried to avoid hitting them. The thing with this spell was it took less mana to cast but required a constant feed of mana to continue launching the blades and required a lot of concentration for my current level. I was effectively a sitting duck that couldn't move when I cast this spell which was why I backed up quite a bit and told the others to cover me.

Things were looking up as more and more bodies piled up but I was panting for breath as the headache from mana deprivation was hammering away and the exhaustion from the fighting was taking its toll on me. "Haah, haah. I can't keep this up for much longer. Another 10 seconds or so and I'll have to stop firing so be ready!". I strained to keep the spell active for a bit longer, which was probably why I didn't notice in time that an ogre had snuck up behind our group from a tunnel behind our group. My mana that was spread around eventually let me know that something was behind me but by then it was too late and I turned my head around to see a club swinging at my face.

There was a loud Thunk as my head was struck and I was sent tumbling, my spell was canceled out before I could even turn my hands towards the ogre. I skid across the ground and was in terrible pain. I tried getting up but everything was moving around and I felt rather dizzy with a loud ringing in my ears that was slowly fading away. I heard someone yell my name faintly over the ringing and tried to respond to them when I remembered that there was an ogre nearby so I pumped all of my mana into a mana barrier. It was all I could do at the moment. I could hardly stand up let alone cast a proper spell. I felt a few large drops in my mana as something struck my barrier multiple times but it stopped eventually.

It took me another 30 seconds before I was able to come to and shake off the feeling and by then I saw that Herald was covering me, finishing off the last few goblins. To my right there was a dead ogre with a large hole in its head with several arrows sticking out of its chest, probably the ogre that whacked me. I shook my head and looked around to see that most of the goblins were dead and all of the ogres were down so I cast a few ice shard spells to help finish them off but missed 3 of my 8 shots since I was still feeling off from that one hit. I pulled a healing potion of my inventory and drank it as Ronia's healing spell was cast on me. I looked around again and all of the monsters were dead. My head was mostly clear now and I could stand straight without falling over every 3 seconds but my head was killing me.

"Jesus christ, my head....that's going to leave a mark. Oww." I complained as I held my head in pain. I heard Ronia ask "You alright? That was a nasty hit to the head. You should stay in the middle of our group for the rest of the time we're down here. You don't seem to be in any shape to fight with melee anymore." I didn't disagree and simply nodded my head while saying "Yeah, alright. I'll stick to range for now. I'm a bit low on mana though. Going to need a mana potion." I then pulled one out and promptly drank it. My headache lessened a bit more. It seems my headache wasn't only from my recent smack to the head but also from mana deprivation. I gladly finished the rest of the drink and my headache was promptly cut in half. I made sure to put the bodies from the ogres into my inventory as well as the goblins even though they were worthless. I just didn't want to give any food to the Horbrots and increase their already high numbers even further.

Ray stepped up and said "Lets go. There were more roars off in the distance. As our last encounter left us worse for wear I highly doubt that any of you guys want to stick around any longer. Especially with the news we need to deliver to the guild." Everyone agreed and we set off once more to the exit. We had to take a couple of twists and turns but eventually got to one of the many entrances to the sewers. As we were walking up to it we heard several screams from outside followed by a couple of smashing sounds. Ray had a rather angry look on his face as everyone looked at the exit full well knowing what this could mean.

We might have been too late to warn the city.
