We quickly went to the wooden wall that was now being reinforced with more wood and leather to prevent fire from being spread to easily. Once we got there Ronia looked around, "I can cast some earth magic and make stone walls, they won't be the biggest or sturdiest, but it's better than nothing". I nodded and us 3 guys continued walking forward as Ronia went around reinforcing the walls with earth magic and creating walls of earth as she walked around.
We got near the wall looking to see if we could help anywhere and one of the guards called out to us. "Oi you 3! C'mere and help us barricade the gate, we need as many hands as possible!" Having nothing better to do, we head over and helped barricade the gate. I remembered that I had basic elemental magic, which would be rather useful in this scenario.
Unlike a normal beginner, I was a beginner with 2 Endgame Classes, so I came with basic endgame magic, even if it was level 7. Part of basic elemental magic is nature magic, aka magic to manipulate plants and the like, so I quickly used it to try and reinforce the barricade on the gate.
What I saw happen was several plant roots bursting out of the ground to twine around the various planks and random things stuck to the gate, firmly holding them in place, and in other places it made large branches to support the walls. I kept at it like this until I used 3/4 of my mana while Harold and Ray helped in their own ways. Since my mana was low I checked around to see if anyone was looking before sneakily using Mana Drain on some rabbits that were walking near the gate. It seemed Mana Drain had a severe limitation of having to be near the target I wanted to drain roughly 7-10 meters away in any direction, somewhere near that. I'm not the best at eyeballing distances ok? By now even the adventurers came and were helping out, so preparations sped up by a lot.
It happened while we were finishing the checks on a section of the walls, and adding leather to the roofs to prevent the buildings from being burnt down by fire arrows. A dozen or so arrows flew out from the forests to the left of the gate we came in from. Most of the arrows missed or embedded into the wall, but a few hit people and cries of pain could be heard somewhere nearby. Everyone became fully alert, with some people firing arrows wildly into the forest in panic. We saw a group of over 30 armed thugs come out of the bushes holding swords, spears, shields and other instruments of death. Most of them were armed in leather but several had a mishmash of full plated armor.
With a vicious war-cry they charged at the village with gleeful looks, ready to bring death to all who stood in their ways. I then felt that particular feeling I felt when something bad was going to happen and noticed some bandits behind the charging group, holding staffs and chanting. "Get away from the gates!" was all I could scream in a panic before running away from the gates. Seconds later there was a massive fireball formed in the air above the bandits, around the size of a carriage and it slammed into the gates with a massive bang.
A loud boom echoed throughout the village as smoke and fire was everywhere near the gates. The gates themselves were blown to kingdom come, with a few charred planks covered in leather the only remains of the gate. I looked towards Harold and Ray who followed me when I yelled my warning and told them "We need to get to the gates and hold them off. Get Ronia to make a wall of stone to hold them off." Ray then exclaimed "Speaking of her, where is Ronia? I haven't seen her since she ran off to build stone walls with magic."
We looked around but couldn't find her, so we decided to run to the gates without her. She could find us later and could most likely handle a bandit or 2 by herself with her magic. When we got back to the gates what we saw was no better than a scene out of some hellish battlefield.
There were dead bodies strewn around, some being bandits but the others being adventurers and villagers who were caught in the crossfire while fleeing or fighting to defend the village. The bandits had pushed into the gates and were making ground. Soon they would break the blockade at the gates and break into the village proper, free to scatter to pillage and slaughter any villagers not hiding.
I was about to say something when I heard a loud "RAAAAAGH" from right next to me. "What the hell Herald! Why are you charging in by yourself you maniac?!" What I saw was Herald charging forward with his shield out, like an unstoppable tank. He was quite literally charging through the bandits, as several of them were crushed by his shield during his charge, or sent flying by his sword. He was covered in a red aura, probably some magic during his charge.
I looked at Ray in exasperation and said "Well, let's go and help the charging bull before he hurts himself" which earned me a laugh and a slap on the back as we charged forward, sword and spear at the ready.
The battle itself was a mess once we got to Herald, who had steamrolled around 6 bandits by the time we caught up. I blocked a sword from some bandit and kicked him in the groin before slicing at his arm, but had to jump back as an arrow flew at my face. I then stabbed at the guys unprotected neck, causing the guy to collapse while gurgling and holding his neck. As I was excited by my first kill a fireball exploded on my back, followed by several arrows whizzing by my head.
"The damn archers at the back are starting to get on my nerves. Hey Zane you got any magic to clean em up? I would rather fight without the constant threat of fireballs blowing up my arms." I thought hard while slicing at another bandit before getting an idea. I quickly kicked the bandit in the gut, sending him reeling, and Ray impaled the guy with his spear.

"I can try something but it's going to be dumb, you up for it?" I asked him while catching my breath. He wiped the blood off of his face and grinned. "I'm game. So what's the plan?" I looked at the 6 mages and 2 archers who had 4 bandits with swords guarding them and said "Follow me and you'll find out. Just make sure to get the hell away from me when I say so. Don't want you to collapse after being accidentally drained because you were caught up in the crossfire." He looked at me in confusion but nodded and followed me as I sprinted towards the gates.
Once near the gates I shouted "Herald make a path through the gates!" without stopping. Herald didn't question me and simply raised his shield and roared as he bulldozed through several bandits, clearing a path through them. The 2 of us got past and continued charging at the mages.
They noticed us approaching and started firing spells our way. Several fireballs flew towards us while more were forming, and 2 spears of ice followed the fireballs, impaling the ground next to Ray. "If those things hit us we're done for! I hope you have a damn good plan!" I didn't bother looking over as I dodged more fireballs flying our way. "Just make sure to kill the archers! I'll take care of the others!"
I started forming fireballs of my own, but it wasn't one at a time like the other mages. I formed 6 at a time and fired them all at the 4 guards, who tried to block or dodge them. I kept up my onslaught until I ran out of mana, which was rather fast, lasting only 2 more volleys. Once we got near the group, there were only 2 bandits with swords alive guarding the 6 mages and 2 archers bearing scorch marks on their iron armor.
Ray charged forward screaming "Piercing Spear Strike!" and punched a hole through the bandit's armor, leaving a massive hole in his gut. He then kicked him into the other bandit, causing them to collapse in a heap. He then stabbed at the other bandit's throat with his spear, but the armor was tough and he didn't penetrate it, only causing scratches. I yelled "Move back!" and fired a large spear made of ice, similar to the ones fired at us. It didn't punch through the armor but caused a massive dent, so I fired 1 more before the barely regenerated mana dried up again.
Ray stabbed his spear into a gap near the guy's neck after the ice spear effectively rendered the guy immobile since he couldn't really breath because of the caved in section of armor on his chest. The armor the bandits all wore was very old, even the full plated armor so it wasn't a surprise that it caved in so easily since they probably didn't maintain the armor often or didn't care enough to bother doing that. It made killing them easier though so I didn't complain.
After the 4 bandits were killed off, and we killed the archers while dodging the annoying spells fired by the mages I looked at Ray and said "Get away from me unless you want to become a shrivelled raisin!" He looked worried and scrambled to get away while saying "Whatever it is you are doing, I hope you finish off the damn mages and make it back alive!"
I turned to the mages and continued to dodge the spells they fired whenever I tried getting near them. After I saw that Ray was far enough away I activated Mana Drain. Instantly the mages noticed their mana being siphoned out of them and into me, and one looked at me panicked while screaming "Necromancer! I-It's a Necromancer! He's using Mana Drain!" This caused the others to panic as well and they started flinging spells at me wildly. From massive spikes flying out of the ground trying to impale me and large fireballs blowing up near me, sending chunks of dirt flying to a dozen spears of ice slamming into the ground and freezing anything near them, they sent everything they could conjure.
By the time I refilled my mana over a dozen spells had been sent my way, with a few missing and heading to the villagers and bandits fighting, causing further mayhem in the already chaotic battlefield. Annoyed at them missing and causing more damage I yelled "Over here you retards! Where are you firing those spells huh? You got shit for brains?!" This made them forget their fear for a moment and instead filled them with anger as they fired spells more aggressively than before. Only this time, none were sent flying wildly and only had one target in mind, me.
I created a massive wall of rock and then another of ice behind that in order to block all the spells sent at me. I was sweating now since I didn't expect them to get that angry at my taunts. "What the hell is wrong with them. I mean I did yell at them but why are they so damn mad, I just called them shit for brain idiots."
Confused and in danger, I kept blocking their spells with walls of rock and ice to avoid being sent to the afterlife. I then retaliated with another onslaught of fireballs and ice spears. I managed to kill 2 of the 6 mages, while 3 of the remaining 4 were chugging mana potions, probably running low on mana after all those spells and being drained by me.
Seeing this as a chance I used mana drain once more and started to laugh in glee as they panicked once more, although not as much as before. With my mana rapidly being refilled, I redoubled my defensive efforts while thinking random thoughts. "It's so damn annoying that Mana Drain can't be cast constantly. It makes my head feel like it's going to blow up if I use it for longer than 10 seconds, which isn't the greatest feeling." Once 12 seconds had past and my mana had been refilled completely, even with me constantly creating walls of rock and ice, I grinned and yelled "I can keep this up all day you morons! Just make sure to have plenty of mana for me to steal!"
They were sufficiently angered with that and redoubled their efforts to kill me, firing larger fireballs and more menacing spears of ice, plowing through my defenses. Seeing as I couldn't just endlessly repeat my cycle of draining them and firing spells due to them breaking my defenses faster than I can put them up, I decided to charge them. I had a sword for a reason you know, it wasn't just a decoration piece.
I went out from behind my walls and immediately saw my life flash before my eyes as over 30 fireballs went roaring towards me. "Fricking hell, can't you give a guy a break?!" I yelled as I scrambled to dodge the multitude of fireballs careening towards me. I barely dodged them while charging towards them when a wall of ice spears came flying at me. "Oh for fuck's sake you guys! I'm the one that should have an endless supply of mana by draining you guys, not you!" As the mages kept chugging mana potions like no tomorrow and flinging dozens of spells at me I continued charging.
"Where the hell are you aiming you sadistic freak?!" I squeaked as several spears of ice barely missed my crotch and slammed into the ground. Getting very pissed off at nearly being made a Eunuch by the ice spears, once I got near the morons who were flinging spells at me I grinned like a maniac. "Oh you guys are SO dead for that one! I can't wait to turn you into Swiss cheese!"
