Chapter 34: Huh, so that's where they went...

OK guys here the problem. Mog suggested i change the way i display the skills and titles because they do sort of blend together. I tried a few things like putting in a Bullet list but it didn't work. Mog gave a few suggestions but none that particularly look good when formatted(I'm sorry mog. Please don't hate me. If i don't get any good suggestions i'll go with one of yours.). So i'm asking for suggestions from you guys. If you see a fiction that displays their skills in a manner that doesn't require a crap ton of BBCode I'm all ears. Just leave a link or example in the comment or PM me and i'll get back to you.

Please comment any thoughts and leave a a review. And as always if you see something wrong point it out and i'll fix it. And as always

Enjoy

The tunnel shakes as the sound of another explosion echos through the tunnel. The tomb door probably won’t hold much long and i still haven’t found the way out. Recalling what Kyanu told me about tombs there should be at least one other entrance/exit other than the main one. There should be one ceremonial entrance(the way i came in AKA the main entrance), one for relatives to visit(restricted to family only to prevent grave robbers), and one for the soul of the deceased fae to come and go as it pleases(soul exit). In regards to the last one some fae choose to remain in this world as ghost of a sort.

Ghosts can form a myriad of ways. A few examples being the soul of a deceased person, that has some reason for remaining in this dimension, inhabiting mana conducting gases released from the corpse or in some rare cases possessing enough raw emotion to keep an incorporeal form. The latter typically is seen in vengeful ghosts while the other is more common. Way back when Kyanu came to be the goddess of death she made official funeral rites and death rituals about how each of the races should treat their dead. Things like how big the tomb should be based on the social status of the deceased, what was to be written on the headstone or how the body should be prepared. Being a goddess of death even if nobody likes her they still are inclined to respect her traditions.

The exit i want is the soul exit. It should be a small tunnel a meter in circumference leading straight up to the surface. Solomon couldn’t use it because this place was built next to an aqueduct. If he tried to leave unshielded by a physical body then there was a chance his soul would have perished. But hopefully we can squeeze out and make for the forest and from there i don’t know. I’m heading down the tunnel when i hear another explosion and a rumbling sound.

“That doesn’t good.” i say.

“Uuuhhhgg” i hear mirana say.

Guess the main entrance is open and flooded with monsters. Hopefully they get lost in the twisting and winding corridors. The soul exit must  be around here somewhere. Eventually i come across an ancient looking runic circle on the floor.

“Inspect” i say using the ability.

Runic Teleportation Circle

An ancient and permanent magic circle meant for teleportation. The creator has placed restrictions on who may use it.

Restricted to: Family of King Connandus

This must be the family's entrance/exit. Unfortunate that i am not a family member, but i can’t help but try anyway. It doesn’t work but still i had to try. However i should be getting close to the soul exit and then we can finally get out of this place.

I’m running down the tunnel when i start passing more wall carvings depicting what i can assume are the great deeds solomon did in his life. There's everything from armies clashing to the birth of his children his life story was written on these walls. I had already heard about his life so i didn’t spare the time to look at them and concentrated on finding the exit.

It was after 30 minutes of searching that i realized something. Any exit or entrance into a tomb would obviously be either trapped or hidden to stop any grave robbers. The fact the i haven’t found it yet probably means it's hidden. Good news though, i think i know how to find it. This place was designed by an earth fae so it's not a far fetched guess that i need an ability only an earth fae would have to find my way around. Earth Sense.

I activate earth sense and imbue my sight with the racial power of the earth faes. All around me i can see green colored dots in the walls, the floor and in the ceiling. The torches that dot the wall don’t glow green but have a dark colored hue around them as if i can detect the mana but can’t discern the type. Maybe it's because earth fae sense are not tuned to fire mana? On the ground a flow of green dots can be seen forming streams of light that into a wall.

“The exit!” i exclaim.

I gather up Mirana who i had set down temporarily and rush over to the wall. After a few minutes of pushing everything i could think of i finally push a glyph on the wall that opens a side passage into a tunnel. I head down the side tunnel into a large chamber. Inside stone pillars encircle a large reflecting pool that was probably there originally for decoration but was what kept solomon in his tomb. Whoever designed this definitely didn’t want solomon escaping, but wasn’t it his wife that made the place? Anyway the exit hole looks just wide enough to accommodate the both of us as long as we shrink down as much as possible.

As i’m climbing the pillars to try and get to the top something doesn’t feel right. Halfway up i really don’t feel good about this so i hold up and send the pixie scout up to investigate. Upon reaching the top the pixie looks around for a moment before it is violently attacked before i disconnect. I hear growls from the top and when i look up i swallow.

“Huh, so that's where Snowdrop and Kitty went…” i said.

Snowdrops size had swelled from that of a cute little kitten to the size of a molly mammoth with fangs like a sabertooth tiger and claws that look like they belonged on a dinosaur. Kitty wasn’t much better. She was half the size of Snowdrop but more deadly looking with dark black fur that shimmered, piercing red eyes that seemed to glow in the dark and moved with the grace of an assassin.

They circled the opening waiting and growling at the 50m drop straight down into 2m of water was not appealing to anyone. So in summary, i can’t get out the soul exit, there's monsters flooding the corridors, and Mirana is still acting like a drunk old man. Honestly if i have to be surprised at one thing it’s Mirana acting like a drunk. Our bodies are exact copies of each other and she's sputtering incoherently. I know we didn’t actually drink but still i hate to see what i’m like when i’m actually drunk. OK so the soul exit is a no go and the main entrance is a no go, and the relatives entrance is restricted...yeah i really could use a miracle right now.

I’m looking around for something to throw at Snowdrop and Kitty when i can hear roars coming from the tunnel behind me as the monsters caught onto my scent. Shit, did i forget to close the side passage? I can hear monsters coming down the tunnel crashing into walls as they close in on our position. And to make matters worse Kitty and Snowdrop found a way down by shrinking to their original size and stabbing their claws into the walls of the hole to slowly descend.

“Seriously! Hey Mirana...Other me, wake up!” i yelled while shaking her.

“What? Who the fuck is Mirana?” she said still half unconscious.

“Do you see anyone else around here? Come on wake up. We got company!” I yell as the monsters make it into the chamber.

She sees the monsters and looks up at the descending cats.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

“OK fine, but we sort this whole who's who problem out later!” she said.

Apparently she doesn’t believe me when i say she's not the real me.

I grab the dagger at my waist and bite into my hand until i drew blood and sprinkled it on the blade. It glowed for a second before i got a notification stating i was the owner yada yada. So now it's me and a girl in a copy of my body against hordes of monsters and two potentially very dangerous cats. I just feel like taking a moment to figure out how i got into this mess.

“You're in the back i’m in the front. Support with fireballs and lightning bolts!” i said brandishing the dagger.

“Fine” she said and readied a pair of fireballs in each hand.

The monsters that we face may be weaker than normal but they also come in droves. Like every zombie video game i ever played, mindless beings of innumerable amounts stacks up after a while and it's even worse when those enemies are faster and have claws and fangs like the situation i face now. I take a moment to charge up the magic blade with mana while activating its bound skill Arcane Blade.

The blade changes color to crimson and a shimmering layer of sparks fly out of the blade. I feel the mana surging so i slash the air in front me. A tidal wave of red energy bursts forth from the blade and collides with the monsters charging at me, cuts through them, and keeps on going until it collides with the wall. Mirana pauses from stalling the cats and fires 3 more fireballs roughly in the direction of the tunnel.

Once the dust cloud settles we can see just how much damage was done. The 3 fireballs,  as big as a small car and charged with maybe 400 MP each, did the least amount of damage leaving craters the size of swimming pools. The slash from my knife through...the entire side of the chamber where the tunnel was was was just gone. The length from the slash from the blade i estimated was bigger than an olympic sized swimming pool and had certainly cut deeper making a mini cave where the tunnel was supposed to be. The support columns had also been damaged by the wave making the whole shake and rattle. I checked my mana gauge to find it at 14900/15000. What the fuck! I put in a 1/12 of the mana Mirana put in and yet this happened!

My ears were ringing and i could faintly hear the cats roaring as they made it down to the floor.

“Hey, Hey Other me. Do that again except don’t try to bury us alive.” I heard Mirana snap at me from behind.

Why is she calling me other me? Oh right, she wasn’t there when me and solomon had that conversation.

Everything was still ringing when i noticed the two cats had encircled us. When did that happen? Mirana had shifted into beastial form and pulled me onto a piece of rubble in the center of the decorate reflecting pool. She somehow covered her fist in lightning and stuck it into the water electrifying the pool and cutting off the cats from attacking us. Snowdrop dipped her paw in the pool and upon receiving an electric shock quickly backed off visibly limping.

“Now what?”  Mirana asks.

“Oh don’t worry about what.” another voice says.

As if popping into existence a mirror appears and yet again Mirror bitch appears. Finally getting my bearings again i stand up to address Zamora.

“You done playing this game Zamora? I heard everything from Solomon. He told me to tell you he’s sorry by the way.” I say.

Zamora, wearing my face still, sneered.

“The old bastard left us caring more for his kingdom than for us. It was obvious the Old hermit had been right when he said the kingdom was going to end! But nooo, instead of getting as far away as possible he chose to die and drag us down with him!” she bellowed.

“You know that's not what he wanted.” i said back.

“It doesn’t matter what he wanted. What matters is what happened. He left his family for a dying kingdom and got us killed along with him.” she yelled right back.

“He tried to come and help in the end. He deserves that much credit at least.” i said trying in some way to placate her.

“He deserves nothing! He was a weak old fool who i will have the pleasure of erasing him from existence. And after he is gone i’ll use you and my sister to escape this place and rebuild the boulder kingdom, but this time i won’t let it go to ruin like that fool did. I’ll definitely show that i’m better than him.” she said with a sadistic smile on her face motioning to me and Mirana.

“So he guessed right. You are trying to build a new body. But even i know that you're not the type to be able to piece together a new body out of monster parts and souls. So would you mind cluing me in on whos your mysterious backer?” i ask.

“I’m afraid the dead have no need for that piece of information.” she claimed.

In all of this Mirana was the most confused. After she had passed out from using too much mana she was aware of any of the things that either of them were saying. Solomon? Zamora? Mirana? The other me had called her Mirana and the other me had called the mirror bitch Zamora. She was obviously well better informed that me and where did she get that knife that blew away the hordes of monsters?

“What are you guys talking about!” The girl named Mirana who did not know her own name screamed.

“Oh, it appears sister dearests memory hasn’t recovered yet. Good thing Professor Warg--” she stopped talking once she realized what she had said.

“Oh do please finish that sentence.” i said.

“Nice try beastkin, but you're going to have to do better than that to make me spill. A pity too, i have a feeling we could have been great friends if only i didn’t have need for your body and soul. Give up, releasing that giant wave of magical energy must have exhausted you and i am in a hurry to acquire a new body. But if it’s any compensation, your body type is just to my liking.” she said eyeing me up and down.

...Now i understand how women feel when guys check them out...I want to kill this pervert.

“OK, you know what. Fuck it. Knife.”

“Knife?” she says questioningly.

Suddenly the Dagger of Arcane Desolation came plunging down into Zamora’s mirror. The glass cracked and the frame broke in two. For such an artifact to be able to cause such damage when fireballs and lightning didn’t work. I decided to keep this knife after this all was over.

“Pro tip Zamora. When you have your enemies on a silver platter don’t start monologuing.” i say to the broken mirror frame on the ground while pulling the knife back through the air on the almost invisible thread of mana running from the handle of the dagger to me.

Suddenly the corpse of a nearby monster glowed and a new mirror forced its way out of the mirror shards on its back.

“Too bad that wasn’t my physical body. Oh and thanks for the tip. I think i’ll head that advice and kill you right now. Kitty, Snowdrop, kill them and collect their corpses. I’ll just have to ask Mr. M to recover their souls for me.” she says and the mirror disappears.

When she's gone the ground shakes and a crack forms inside the reflecting pool draining away all the electrified water. The cats then leap towards us not afraid of getting electrocuted anymore and start swiping at us with their claws and trying to bite us with their fangs.

“Who the hell is Mirana? And what does she mean a new body? Why didn’t you just give her the stuff! Now she's going to kill Silva and Hyuna!” Mirana yelled still not informed of what was happening.

“Look ‘i'll explain later but for now can we concentrate on not dying!” i said trying to fending off another one of Kitty’s claw attacks.

“Fine but you owe me an explanation after all this is done.”
