Dwarves are a race that can trace their ancestors back to Ancient fae. A salamander general named Brannon was flying back from a hunting trip when he spied a beautiful maiden bathing in the river and instantly fell in love. The maiden in question was an earth fae named Roxanne had seen the man who spied upon her and screamed whilst flinging a river stone at him which promptly hit him in the forehead and he died. The woman feeling remorse and panic for what she had done and to trick general's family told them that she was with his child and they had planned to wed. Roxanne took the corpse of the salamander general from where he lay in his grave and fused his remains with Iron ore, and stone bringing forth the first dwarf, Durin.

However, the child was disfigured and Brannon’s family was appalled at the child that the woman had obviously created from magic to trick them. Feeling vengeful and disgust for the death of her son and the child the woman had shown them, brannons mother, Kellen, took her sword and beheaded the woman. The child was thrown out of the fae realm down to Ryalia, but instead of dying was picked up by an old woman who had been tending her garden.

The woman, Demeter was in fact an ancient god who had retired from the life of an immortal, giving up her Divine power to live on the planet that she dearly loved and cared for. She had found the young dwarf crying and wrapped in blankets not far from the village she lived in. She took the young dwarf in not caring for his disfigurement. He had a sister Persephone, they got along playing in rivers and making towers of stone and flowers.

He soon grew up and although short and disfigured, was respected for his hard work. He wondered what he should do now that he had grown up. One day while he was walking along the river he saw smoke in the distance, coming from where the village was. Quickly as he could, he rushed to the village to find it under attack by a dragon. His foster mother and sister stood afraid of the dragon which had burned down many house and eaten many of their friends. The dragon sprayed its scorching breath towards the mother and daughter when Durin swiftly pushed the two out of the way while being engulfed in the blazing breath of the dragon.

The two women, distressed to see someone their family member engulfed by fire were astonished to find when the blazing breath and smoke clear Durin perfectly fine. The Dwarf, although shocked that he had survived, grabbing his family ran to the nearby river and jumped in narrowly avoiding the flames of the dragon. Beaten but not defeated, The Dwarf brought his family to another nearby village and asked them to remain there. Going back to the village he had spent his life in he was saddened and enraged by all the death and destruction that he saw. Fueled by this he sought to kill the dragon, but the world was young and no one had yet killed a dragon or knew how to. He wandered the land for 3 years until he found himself in front of a seer who told him to go to the home village of his grandfather, there he would unlock the secrets of how to use and control the innate magic in his blood.

Needless to say that his grandmother, did not accept the child that she had thrown out all those years ago had survived and had come back to claim his Birthright. Undiscouraged he pressed for her help but she refused time and time again, when one day after unsuccessfully trying to convince his grandmother to give him his birthright he was approached by a  salamander woman who he found out to be his half sister, Anira. She had heard his pleas and wanted to help but could not without her mother's consent so she made him a proposition. Kellen was the Salamander kings 2nd concubine and was in competition with the 1st and 3rd concubines for the attention and favor of the king. Anira had been treated by her mother as nothing more than a pawn in her private war with the other concubine and had no wish to see her succeed. She would teach him how to use his magic if only he would one day help her bring her down.

So for the next year Durin learned from Anira in secret, practicing and developing his methods until one day when Kellen had found out about the things going on behind her back. She dispatched men to capture her rebellious daughter and kill the Disfigured runt who had dared plot against her. Durin, with Anira’s help, escape and made his way back to the outside world but the soldiers from her mother caught up with her and captured her. Durin, knew that he would one day come back and fulfil his promise so he concentrated on getting his revenge for the injustice that was done to him and his family that day.

He stalked the woods, mountains and plains looking for the dragon that had destroyed his home until one morning he finally found it hunting once again in the mountains near his village. The lone dragon was a beast of massive proportions with golden scales covering its body, enormous wings that seem to shimmer in the sunlight, and eyes that shone like rubies.

Attacking it head on with his magic, he failed and was sent packing by the enraged dragon. Escaping into the earth he who had failed in his attempt to kill the dragon that had destroyed his peaceful life he wandered the lands not knowing what he was looking for. His foster demeter, mother who had waited for him to come home for years to no avail sent was dying and persephone went to go look for him. When persephone found Durin he was at rock bottom, but when he was told that demeter was dying he went back to find that she had passed away while they were away.

Durin had given up. Persephone, his foster sister, was saddened that he had been the cause of her not being by her side when she died and even more furious that he left them without word and to that he had nothing to say. Durin went back to the village where he had spent his life in. The ground was covered in ash, and the buildings in ruins. Bodies lay out in the open since the area was considered cursed by the surrounding villages and had been reduced to skeletons long ago.

He went back to the garden where his foster mother had spent her days tending to the plants to find it still intact, unmarred by the death and ruin as expected by a former goddess. He settled down to sleep in the garden for the night and fell asleep. He dreamt he was in a cave the dragon that had destroyed his life was inside bearing its fangs at him. The dragon attacked with its fangs nearly relieving him of his upper body as he quickly dashed under the dragon's body and hid behind a  large rock at the back of the cave. Inside were mountains of jewels and gold taken from the surrounding area, crystal formations dotted the walls and a great door with carvings of reapers and graves lay at the back of the cave that was big enough for the massive dragon to go through with ease.

Durin ran to the door and tried to open it to no avail. The dragon came following the dwarf intending to eat the intruder when the door suddenly lit up and opened a tiny bit. The dwarf not questioning why the door suddenly opened rushed through as pushed the door closed just in the nick of time. On the other side was an enormous cave with countless crystal formations, beautiful stalactites, a big dark river and a shining city in the distance. There were countless people in dark robes moving towards the shining city and overhead winged creatures screamed while on the ground strange shadow like hounds howled. In front of him was a gate and a sign written in a strange language that he could not decipher with an ominous skull mounted on top of it.

The strange people in the dark robes paid him no attention except to move around him as he walked in the direction of the glittering city.  He was unnerved by the silence and the hundreds thousands of people all around him doing nothing a saying nothing except walking forward and when he tried to talk to one and ask him where he was he got no response. He lifted the hood of one of the robed persons only to find something that unnerved him even more. The robed person had no face only the stark white bony surface of the a skull greeted him as he lifted the dark hood. He quickly rushed over to another and lifted its hood as well to find another skull, and another, and another until a screech came from the sky.

He looked up to find a demon with six arms, bat wings and the lower body of a serpent come down with two other four armed demons beside her.

“How dare you disturb the deceased. Who are you monster.”

Apparently the demon mistook his disfigurement for being a monster. He quickly explained what had happened to him and the strange door he had scene in the back of the cave and how it had lit up. Strangely at this the demon smiled and motion for her two assistants to grab his arms.

“Well then it would be rude of you to our master to keep her waiting.” and with that the demon’s took off with him in arms struggling to get away from the demonic creatures.

They flew for what seemed like kilometers passing all kinds of dreadful scenes of death. Dark outlines of people with shimmering bodies and ghostly appearances could be seen running through fields of stone spikes and being lowered into boiling liquid. There was a lake where something ancient could be felt and a dark abyss where no light could penetrate. After finally seeing all this he came to the realization that he had fallen into hell itself.

The demons flew him towards a palace that stood in the distance that seemed to be made of fire, shadows and the souls of the dam. The tall spires stretched into the ceiling and the moat walls decorated with spikes. The demons flew him in through in through a pair of grand gates and down a hall into the throne room. Sitting on the throne was a woman with flaming red hair wearing a crone made of bones and glowing souls. She wore a glimmering gown and held a scepter made of some dark material and bones and had a look of amusement on her face.

“Well little one, you have had an interesting journey. Born of unnatural circumstances and refused by everyone in the end. You have trespassed into my realm and i would normally send you to the abyss as punishment but you still have some use.”

The queen on the throne looked at him with curious eyes and made him a proposal.

“When you entered my realm you saw a dragon yes, that dragon was put there to limit my reach in the world above, and i grow tired of it. I will give you the ability to wield the all riches under the earth if you send its soul to me. I recommend fire little one.” she said with a cheeky smile.

Since Durin had nothing left to lose he accepted wholeheartedly and was taken by the demons to a chamber deep under the castle. Inside there was a mountain of metals and jewels as far as the eye could see.

The dwarf had no idea what to do. At this time blacksmithing did not exist and all weapons where made of stone or wood. Most villages where at the mercy of the gods and taught only how to survive by their mercy.

“I recommend fire little one” was what the goddess had said as if it would help. He pulled a piece of some sort of bar from a pile of similar ones. Unknown to him this ore was going to be the start of something great.

The young dwarf ignited a flame in his hand and held the bar over it. The bar glowed red with heat and smoke started covering his vision and he dropped the bar while trying to get a breath of fresh air. When he stumbled back to the stone he noticed the structure had changed and there was a large dent in it where he had dropped it on the hard ground. He heated it up again this time he holding a cloth to his mouth he held the bar over the fire until it was red and dropped it on the ground again. The bar had bent and the structure once again had changed. While it was still red he picked it up with his bare hands. Ever since learning fire magic from his half sister he was not bothered by the heat very much even though he knew that he should have been. He continuously hit the bar on the ground until he had made a rough club.

He wanted to make something no one had, he wanted to create something that could break the scales of the the dragon. He moved on from pile to pile of bars of sparkling materials, heating them in his hand, and while some would not bend he suspected with more fire he could. He conjured a great flame to melt a small piece of material that had obstinately refused to turn red or even shape like the others had.

As he tried to heat the material even hotter the surrounding items began to melt so he stopped. Clearly this wasn't going to work but this material he had found had withstood very strong flames. If he could figure out a way to turn it red then he could turn it into something that could withstand the dragon's breath attack. He needed a name to call all these materials. The problem was it wasn’t stone, wood or any other material he had ever encountered so he would have to come up with a new name. How about metal.
