Part 2 - Withered

Jeremy looked at the newspaper clipping for a night shift job at Freddy’s JR, looking at the pay and such. 100 dollars wasn’t too awful for a week, it’d be enough for college at least. He figured he’d give the place a call later, see if there were any open spots. He sat on the couch, thinking about the last location, and the tragedy that occurred there. Was this really the job he wanted? He sighed, and decided that maybe he should see the place first. He went down the elevator in his apartment building, and hopped in his defunct car, driving to the pizza place. It was just like being a kid again. The air smelled of cheap pizza, but not the bad kind, the kind that you enjoyed only here. The mascots were singing their silly songs, and the party room was alive with the sounds of kids and adults alike. Maybe they finally got their act together, and made a safe location for everyone. Maybe, just maybe..

Steve inhaled the sweaty pizza air, and walked into kids cove, to make sure Dave hadn’t attached anything to any of the mascots. He left kids cove, and went to the main party room to oversee the mascots. Freddy, Bonnie and Chica were asleep on stage, so Steve clapped twice. Their eyes opened, and Freddy turned to Steve.

“Morning already? Man, I just fell asleep too.” Freddy yawned, rubbing sleep out of his robot eyes. He had a simple black suit vest hemmed in gold to complete that tan bear look.

“Ugh… feels like we can never sleep longer than 2 hours…” Bonnie complained, stretching. Bonnie was a sleek sky blue rabbit with big round green pupiled eyes and a black suit vest hemmed in red. He tapped his foot when he yawned, before reaching for his guitar.

Chica chirped in agreement, and woke up Clyve the cupcake,

“Place opens in a few hours, get yourselves up and ready, we have an inspection today.”

“Inspection today? Weird,”

Steve walked off, and turned the arcade machines on, failing to notice that the puppets box was open already. He opened the door to kids cove, and kicked Mangle.

“Wake up, you pile of crap, we have an inspection today, and you better hope they’re fine with you.”

Mangle growled and bared her teeth, before crawling into a dark corner to glare at Steve.

“Look, I know you don’t trust faculty members, but that's just Dave you have to worry about. I’m not gonna hurt you, I promise.”

Mangle made a low growling sound, mixed with a badly tuned radio. Steve sighed, and wandered out, but not before making sure the vents in that room were securely shut. Last time they neglected to check, it was before the night watch was supposed to show up… he never saw it coming. It had always amazed him that he’d survived that long without a throat, after all. Although he had heard other employees talking about some new guards they hired, tonight was their first shift. Maybe he’d say hi when they showed up… he watched the clock in the entrance until it hit 10 am, and unlocked the doors before going to the front office to watch the cameras, making sure nobody tried to steal anything. Dave showed up an hour later, sitting down in the admission area to welcome guests. Eventually, around noon, a sleek purple car rolled up, and Steve nearly dropped his coffee. Eventually, a man with messy black hair and a purple suit entered the building, and Steve ran out to meet him.

“M-MR. Afton! It's uh… it's nice to see you!” Steve stammered, adjusting his hat.

“Yes… I suppose it is.” William said, his eyes falling on every imperfection on Steve: his suit was loose, his hat was barely on, and his badge was upside down, but if he had cared, he said nothing.

“You know what I’m here for. Let's go see how well this place is running, hm?”

Steve nodded, and went into the main party room. Kids were sitting on little plastic stools, listening to Freddy and his friends sing songs and tell jokes. Everyone seemed happy, adults were chatting like old friends while their kids played hide and seek under the tables. William nodded approvingly, and gestured to the doorway to the arcade. The arcade was a little less lively, but the sounds of the arcade made it seem a lot less quiet. A handful of kids were playing different arcade games, such as pizza gamer or the critically acclaimed “fruity maze”. One kid was thinking on a plushie, his little brain deciding between a freddy plush or a bonnie plush. William took notes, and smiled at Steve, before gesturing to the room that Steve had low hopes for: Kids cove. The room was madness, young kids were trying to coax a frightened toy foxy off of the ceiling, while it made a sound between a whine and a horribly tuned radio. William made a confused look, and turned to Steve.

“Is she always like this?” he inquired, making notes on the clipboard.

“She’s uh… usually asleep or something, never seen her try to HIDE from people until now.”

William made a face halfway between confusion and pity for the fox, who shot him a pleading look best her single eye could. She scuttled over to the far corner and clung to it with all 8 of her limbs, her endo head looking around in a panic.

“”Should we… take her out of-”

“We have no need to.” William responded almost instantly, cutting off Steve's question.

“Ever since she was… y’know-”

“I know what happened, Steve.”

Steve nodded, and WIlliam gestured to leave the room. The kitchen was clean, some rat traps were in out of the way places to catch the rat that somehow stole a large pepperoni pizza. The cooks waved to William, but said nothing. The duo went back to the main party room, and down the hall to the left. William took Steve’s word that the bathrooms were clean, and went into parts and service.

“Still no camera in here?”

“Yeah, the new one is still being brought here.” Steve said, avoiding eye contact with anything in the room.

“Not too big a fan of this room, huh?” William asked, a smirk on his face.

“Look, boss, this place has so much old stuff… and well, you know what happened the last time these were in use.” Steve stammered, slowly backing out of the room.

William gestured out of the room, and Steve gladly left. They peeked into the other 4 birthday-rental party rooms, only one in use. William shook his head.

“Ever since the last place and the murders… nobody shows up anymore. ” he sighed, watching a kid open a birthday present with a look of longing on his face that Steve didn’t think was related to the location. The inspection was concluded, and William left, ignoring Dave who was asleep at the desk. Steve sighed, and sat down in the office.
