Vol 5: Chapter 1 - A quest for NPCs? by Tewlve & V4lkyr13

TRIIINNNNGG!!!

Clear the Kobold Mines. The Kobolds of Kobold Hall have been unable to find work as their mine has been overrun by monsters. You must clear the mine of the black arachnid scorpios so that they can begin mining once again.

Difficulty Level: B

Reward: ?????

Quest Requirements: A finalist of Theodore’s competition who is quite strange.

- If you refuse this quest existing fame will be reduced by 350. All merchandise bought in Kobold is will become 66% more expensive for 1 week!

- You will be distrusted by Kobolds for refusing and thrown out of Kobold hall.

Weed groaned. It was indeed the damned scorpions again! However, unlike Kendelbreu’s quest the penalties were less severe. However this was also the first time Weed received a B level quest. Weed was tempted to accept it. However, he was keeping track of his quest count. He would be faced with the same option, primary or secondary?

He banged his fist on the floor in frustration. As expected, the terms too were harsh. The floor trembled, scaring the kobolds.

“Whaatt issss the matter? Weed Weed?” Asked the elder.

Weed knew the NPC wouldn’t understand his frustration. He decided to change topics and delay his response. He was hoping to be able to wiggle his way out of his. “Wait. Is that not Keldelbreu’s mine?” Weed had to ask out of curiousity.

Mementh Mnementh had expression of disgust on his face.

“Kendelbreu’s ancestor was greedy brother. He stole what is ours!”

Weed stared at the Elder suspiciously. His lessons in RREV have so far taught him not to trust anyone, do not trust anyone and don’t trust anyone.

“I refuse to accept this quest.” Weed said.

“Pleasssse if you do this. You will have our eternal gratitude and may forever mine in our territory without cost.”

TRRRING!

You negotiated with the Kobolds for better terms! Be careful, if you negotiate too hard, you risk their wrath!

“I refuse to accept this quest.” Weed asserted with the same choice of words.

“...Then let me pledge the hand of my beautiful granddaughter to you shall you return victorious.”

Seriously? A kobold betrothed? No thank you!

“I fear, I am too low leveled for this task elder.” Weed replied, untempted by the increased rewards (counting out the last reward, that sounded more like a punishment). He had first hand experienced the wrath of the scorpions. He knew better than to risk his life pointlessly. It was given he would fail this quest if he accepted it.

“Then take my grandson with you. He can be a big help as he is a Priest of Wyrm Healing and will help you in your task.”

So saying he gestured to the Kobold who had rescued Weed earlier from the dwarves. Weed was tempted a little; there was the chance to build strong relations with the Kobold race. But adding a single kobold didn’t change the maths. The entire mining crew and soldiers at the entrance were wiped out in single hits. One kobold and one low leveled elf, aren’t a powerful team.

“I am sorry. But I have to refuse.” Weed said flatly.

“I will offer you my personal guards as well! The best Kobold fighters.”

Two kobolds stepped forward and bowed towards Weed.

“...”

“Well, Weed what now say you?” asked the Elder.

‘Bluntly refusing is not working out. They just don’t seem to be listening.’ Weed tried a tactful answer instead. Logic is the unshakable force in heaven and earth!

The kobolds around the room were moving to throw him out as he became unresponsive.

“W... wait! Hear me out!” Weed spoke quickly. They gave him a little more time to talk.

“I would be glad to help. I barely escaped the scorpion. I did not kill any. You are mistaken of my feats.” Weed was hoping his deceit skills would back him up. Technically, he killed only baby scorpions, no giant ones. So it was a decent lie.

Groans of disappointment could be heard across the room.

TRRINGG!

Deceit Skills leveled up! Now beginner level 7! Your lies now sound so convincing, that they often can be heard spoken in nobel’s servant quarters.

“Great! Now we have no way to feed our people! So poor are we! Barely can we feed our young ones! I thought we finally found someone that can do it.” Mnementh Mnementh sighed. The feel of the room had turned from elation to dejection. None of them even cared to throw the elf out anymore. If Weed was not the prophesied hero, then all hope was truly lost. If they continued waiting doing nothing was the same as starving to death.

“Then help us to kill the dwarves at the fort. That way, we can reclaim our mines.” The grandson spoke for the first time. Ever Kobold turned to him.

Muttering sounds of agreement began to surface.

Reclaim the Kobold Mines. The Kobolds of Kobold Hall have realized you are not the hero destined to save them. However, they still wish to employ your services. Kill the dwarves at the Fort nearest to the Kobold Mine.

“KILL KILL KILL KILL..” chanted the kobolds in unision.

“No. You are asking for the impossible!” Weed rejected in reflex.

Quest declined.

Now the kobolds were truly angered. This time they approached Weed with hostile looks. Mnementh was the one who came to this rescue.

“Enough!”

Mnementh’s shout echoed around the room. He was old and bent. But he still has strong voice. Reluctantly the crowd returned to their previous position.

“You fool! Do you wish to destroy our own race!”

Mnementh smacked his own grandson with his walking stick. The grandson was unrepentant though he kept silent. His glare still burned with anger. Weed did not notice that. He was too busy thinking up how to avoid being tossed out.

“I thought putting you to the priesthood would quench your foolish thirst for vengenance. I can see I am mistaken!” scolded the Elder.

As the drama unfolded, ideas flashed and plans churned through Weed’s mind. His mind rushed through the possibilities, discarded some and improved on others. He thought through his plans and concluded it was wicked and brilliant.

“Elder Mnementh.” Weed spoke hesitantly. He was not sure whether this could work.

Mnementh Mnementh turned to Weed. He showered Weed with the same look, he used to scold his grandson.

‘He is probably considering whether to toss me out now for declining or going to kill me. Better say it quick.’

“I offer you a Mission! Should you accept it! You can increase your wealth a hundred fold! No to increase your wealth a million fold! The reward also includes rightfully teaching Kendelbreu a lesson!”

A player can offer NPC a mission right? Weed wondered.
