Vol 2: Chapter 4 - Koi Ponds & Fairies

After exiting the Eastern Gate, Weed headed towards the forest located a few hundred meters ahead. He wasn’t sure where to go from here, the old man told him that Alak knew the way so there was no need for a map. Unfortunately, Alak was nowhere to be seen. After reaching the edge of the forest, Weed searched for a suitable spot to take a break. He decided to wait for a while and see if Alak returns.

Weed filled up Snappy’s bowl with water and lay down some meaty treat beside it. He took out rye bread and began munching away on it. As crumbs of rye bread fell into the pond beside their picnic spot, koi fish scrambled to get a bite. Weed watched them and noticed after trying some rye bread they returned back…. ‘Even the fish dislike rye bread …..tastes so bad.’ But Weed ate it, he didn’t have any money of his own, he hadn’t taken up any job which paid him as yet. Weed was the same as any player who had just began on their first day. Level FF/000.

TTRRRRINNG!!

Resting by a beautiful pond, feeding Koi fish has lifted your spirits. Stamina Recovery rate has quadrupled while you rest here.

‘That was an interesting discovery.’

As Weeds stamina recovered, a dim familiar glow reappeared in front of Weed. “Alak is that you?”

“FINALLY!” Screamed Alak. “Never let your stamina, drop below 25%!”

“huh?”

“Don’t tell me you don’t know?”

“…..”

“I am a level one fairy, I can only sustain myself on mana! Since the old man told me to be your companion, yours is the only stamina I can feed on!”

Weed wore a shocked look! ‘YOU LEECHER!’ he screamed in his head.

Alak however didn’t take notice of Weeds changed expression. She was just happy to be back. “OOOO!!” she exclaimed. “You found a Koi Pond! These are fairly rare. I am surprised I didn’t notice this here before.”

Weed decided not to say anything about the leeching and instead build a better relationship with the fairy. “Are there more such ponds? Asked Weed.

“YES! There are hundreds of of ponds and not all ponds are similar!” Alak responded excitedly. It was a topic of great interest to Alak. “This is a Koi Pond. It is on the rarer side. There are plain simple common, beautiful ponds which help recover stamina or health though slower than the Koi. There are even ponds which temporarily increase elemental affinity. But those are very very rare. Something like you could find a 100 Koi ponds before you found one of those!”

“Are there any more rarer on those?” Asked Weed, fairly interested in the topic of ponds which could be beneficial.

“Yes! There are some even I don’t know off! I am from the fairy pond….” Alak suddenly stopped talking. Her translucent wings appeared (normally they are invisible as the fairy beats them through the air very quickly but if they were to tire out the wings flap slower and are easier to spot) and her glow dimmed. Weed realized he touched upon a sensitive topic.

“How about we visit a fairy pond together next time?” Weed asked hoping to raise the little fairies spirit.

“Really? You’ll do that for me??” Alak asked as her excitement returned (so did her glow).

TTRRRRINNG!!

Weed groaned. Rank C! How difficult was it to find a fairy pond? He had just offered to help out of NPC flattery and kindness! He didn’t think it would lead to a quest! Much less a quest with such a strong refusal penalty.

“Sure why not.” Weed replied bitterly.

Weed smiled, a better relationship meant the less likely the fairy would be annoying during the journey. A peace of mind guaranteed.

Once Weed’s stamina recovered, they began journeying their way through a forest trail. It wasn’t a difficult journey as Weed had imagined it to be, just a tediously long one. Weed had expected a monster ambush or two. Sadly, the forest was too peaceful. There were just trees everywhere and a very long unwinding path. Unlike Weed who was getting bored, Snappy seemed to be more excited. Familiar scents everywhere, lots of open spaces to….do doggy stuff and run around.

“Woof!” barked Snappy while wagging his tail happily.

“He says he wants to play.” Alak translated.

Weed lifted a dried twig, he had a dog once who loved playing stick. He smiled sadly at the thoughts of his dog.

“Woof!”

“He saying throw it quickly.”

Weed threw the stick with all his might. Weed was happy that the stick landed far, a good hundred feet away.

“Woof!” With a bark, Snappy chased the stick and brought it back. However, he seemed to be content with one throw and refused to give the stick back.

The trail started disappearing and now Weed only relied on Alaks light and directions. With Snappy’s treats over, it the wheel barrow became lighter and easier too push, they were able to pick up pace. However at nightfall, Snappy refused to move. Alak told Weed that Snappy believed it would be too dangerous to continue in the darkness and it would be best too rest.

Weed however thought differently. “Snappy, want to play stick?” He asked with an excitement in his voice.

“Woof!”

“I bet you can’t find the stick in the dark!”

‘Bring it on squirrel!’

“Alak which direction do we have to go? “

“Straight?”

Weed threw the stick straight ahead and Snappy chased after it. This continued till day break. Snappy whined, he was very tired and carrying 15 sticks in his mouth left it dry (it seems Snappy didn’t want to leave behind sticks he got hold of, so he would carry them…).

“Alright! Let us take a break!” said Weed, who was happy with their progress. They were nearing the quest time limit, another 2 days to go. “Alak, I am going to back in a bit ask Snappy to guard the barrow.”

The fairy happily bounced as if to nod a yes.

Lee Jun logged out. “54 hrs of non-stop gaming. I could do with a break. Set alarm for 6 hours from now.”

“Alarm set.”

Weed ran down to make a sandwich. He needed food and coffee to keep himself going. He remembered reading how Lee Hyun once gamed for 204 hours straight, but figured it was impossible for him.

After much struggle uphill, they finally reached to an open clearing in the middle of the forest. In the centre of the clearing was a small wooden cabin. Snappy rushed towards the cabin barking all the way.

“SNAPPY! MY BOY!” a gruff voice cracked through the air. “You’ve returned!”

Snappy leapt in the air and toppled a dwarf who had just stepped out. Snappy began licking the hairy dwarf all over.

‘That’s the sword master?’ Weed had read enough fantasy stories to know dwarves were good with hammers and not swords. They loved the job of being a blacksmith and miner more than a melee role. Lastly, dwarves never got along with Dragons or Elves. Weed was…unfortunately ….an elf.

Weed didn’t swear, he learnt terrible habits were costly through a painful lesson.

“FISH!”
