Vol 1: Chapter 8 - The First 8 Days

- Welcome to Royal Road – Elementarem Vim. You are currently in the city of Lavias. Please look around and feel to request for help as this tutorial will run the background. –

With a flash of light, Weed appeared in Lavias. He looked around at the bustling town. Close to the spot where he had shown up was a bulletin board exhibiting maps and descriptions of Lavias City, and directions on where to head next. He quickly read the history of Lavias and then opened a map window to plot the route to the wind temple, his next destination. As Weed took his first steps towards the wind temple, a cold wind blew past his face and he sneezed loudly. “Achoo!”

A message popped up. * You have caught a cold. Maximum health and stamina reduced by 75%.*

“Seriously? F***!”

A bunch of players who walked past Weed laughed at Weed. Weed was the first person they had seen in Lavias to catch a cold. Players who had wind affinity had a starting elemental bonus resistance to cold temperature bonus (in their own homeland only). Even Life and Force affinity players had some level off resistance to cold. There weren’t that many players in the initial hours of the game, so Weed was the first neutral affinity player in Lavias!

As he walked around, he came across a lot of beginners like him scurrying around talking to NPC’s and gathering information about the game. It took Weed nearly 3 in game hours to reach the Wind Temple. This was largely due to his reduced stamina. Pretty much after every 15 steps he had to rest of a 5 minutes. Initially, some players asked Weed if he was feeling alright. But when they learnt he had caught a cold, they could only pass a smile to conceal their laughter. It was most amusing for the players to watch Weed struggle to reach the temple.

A priest stood at the entrance of the temple. He smiled at Weed who collapsed at the entrance.

“You have struggled hard. May the Wind God protect you.”

TRRRIINNGG!!

Your cold has been cured!

You have finally reached the Wind Temple of Lavias!

Feeling re-energized, Weed stood up and thanked the priest for the blessing.

“It was the will of the God. If you truly want to receive his continued protection, I would suggest becoming a citizen of the Air Kingdom.”

TRRRINNNGG!!

You have been offered citizenship in the Air Kingdom. Neutral Affinity players owe no allegiance to any kingdom and are not protected by Gods grace. Would you like to accept the citizenship?YesNo

“No!” Weed felt he was on to something. Not owing allegiance to a Kingdom could work in his favour in the long run…his reasoning ran along the lines of ‘being a lone crusader / adventurer would make a more legendary story than being part of a faction where he received assistance’.

TRRRINNNGG!!

You have displeased the God of this Kingdom with your decision. Relationship with Wind God: -1.

Great. I had to begin with ticking off a God. Weed thought too himself.

TRRINNGG!

The Wind God has cursed you. Cold winds will blow in your direction all day. It is all advisable that you stay indoors to avoid the wrath of the God.

“F*CK! F*CK! F*CK!”

After he cooled down a bit, he entered the temple and walked into another priest.

“Young adventurer, I presume you have arrived at the Versailles continent very recently,” the priest said.

“Yes, oh great monk.” Weed said. He was still upset that he had managed to catch a cold, wasted time reaching the temple and now ticked off a God. He was hoping flattery would work up some miracle for him.

“ Ho ho ho. Unfortunately, I am not a great monk. I am a great priest. Ho ho ho. You shall find temple absolutely necessary to learn basic combat skills. May I ask, what is your affinity?”

“Neutral.” Weed said.

The priests eye’s shone with pity. “Unfortunately, we have no training for a neutral affinity player in this temple or in the city of Lavias.”

Weed fell quiet. RREV had many elements similar to Royal Road, even the initial lock in period within a city for two weeks. Weed had no idea what he would do during this time.

Almost as if the NPC priest sensed Weed’s sorrowful emotions, he suggested, “There is a profession school just near here. Maybe mastering a profession would be the right way forward for you.”

Weed sorrowfully agreed and made his way out of the temple. As he took his first steps out of the temple, strong cold winds rushed towards him.

TRRRIINNGG!!

You have been weakened by the cold.

“I F**KING HATE THE WIND GOD!” Weed screamed out aloud. He sat and cursed the Wind God for the next hour or so when he received a message.

TRRRIINNGG!!

You have angered the Wind God. Relationship with Wind God: -5

TRRRIINNGG!!

The cold winds are seeping into your bones. You are too weak to resist the cold. You are losing HP. Please heal yourself.

Weed had had enough. He was the lowest class FF and had the lowest level 0. He had no bonus skill points applied and he didn’t care much about the game anymore. He rather chose to die. Its not like the programme could impose a penalty on him. In fact, the more Weed thought about it, the more curious he became, what would happen if he died? It was usually impossible for an absolute beginner to die. With his childish curiosity at its peak, he continued cursing the Wind God.

* Your character has died due to extreme cold*

The screen went black and a window was glowing in front of Weed.

- CHARACTER LEVEL 0, Base Skill Points 0. Player is under newbie protection for 2 weeks. –

- Cannot impose any penalty. –

- Reloading last saved location. Requesting Wind God to consider resetting relationship.-

- Request accepted. All NPC relationships have been reset. -

“Darn!” mumbled Weed. He was hoping he had discovered some sort of glitch in the system that he could exploit. Clearly, the game developers had done a thorough when they made this. Or was this done intentionally? He found the words ‘Requesting Wind God’ most interesting. It seemed that the Wind God was some sort of master AI…this piece of information could be vital. It was a huge gamble. Weed repeated his actions. He would catch a cold, struggle to reach the temple, refuse the citizenship, curse the God and die. It seemed completely pointless and a waste of time but Weed continued killing himself several times but soon players began taking notice of Weed. At this point Weed took a break from the suicidal stretch, he didn’t want anyone to know that was on to something. He went to a café and sat down.

An old man approached Weed and took a seat next to him. It was an NPC and it began babbling about Lavias. He went on to talk about Lavias’ glorious days in the past. Weed initially took interest (again thinking this would lead to some hidden quest) but he was greatly disappointed that it did not even lead to an increase relationship stats with the NPC.

After an hour long break, he resumed his suicidal expedition and once again when players began taking notice of him he hid in the café. Surprisingly, the old man approached Weed again and began with stories about Lavias. This happened three – four times. The stories remained the same, but something convinced Weed that although no relationship was being built, they shared some connection. And on the fifth time, the old man just stared at Weed.

“You do know there is no hidden quest, coming out of what you are doing.” Said the old man.

Weed was smiling with happiness! The NPC finally gave a different reaction, he had been expecting something all along these lines all this while! Finally! Finally! His crazy attempts were about to pay off! He had endured three days of embarrassment. Players would laugh at him no matter where he went. He knew this was it!! This was the moment of truth!!

“Are you sure?” asked Weed asked with a smug look on his face.

The old man chose to be silent and looked away from Weed. Weed’s heart was beating away in excitement. This was it!! This must be the mother of all quests!! This could well be the starting of his journey towards the $1 billion!! ‘Speak you old fool!! Speak!! No longer do I want to hear about your crazy exploits in Lavias or the boring history of Lavias!! Just tell me what I seek!!’ Thought Weed to himself.

After a long silence, the old man spoke again. “Yes, I am absolutely sure. However, if you do not heed my advise, you may anger the God beyond the point of redemption. I think it is best that you do not do so.”

“Oh.” That was all Weed could say. He thought he had misheard the old man. So he asked again, but he got the same reply. It didn’t really sink in, so he asked one more time just to be sure.

“So your saying, there is no hidden quests or glitch that I can access from what I am doing?”

“Yes Weed, haven’t I already repeated that enough times?”

This was somewhat anti-climatic for Weed. The building up of anticipation, the excitement…all for naught?

Weed sat quietly in his chair to absorb the whole situation. He had just spent 4 days killing his character over and over again, in the hope he found a SSS quest.

Weed began banging his headed on the table. Players in the café ignored him, most of them had been here long enough to establish Weed as crazy. They were least surprised if he now resorted to head banging.

“Weed, I think you should stop. You will hurt yourself.”

But Weed continued. He felt so stupid.

The old man repeated himself. “Weed, I think you should stop. You will only hurt yourself.”

Weed froze. He knows my name! He knows my name! No more importantly he knows what I have been upto!! Weed suspicious looked at the old man. He was trying to figure out whether the old man was an NPC or a player. If Weed’s memory served him right, the System clearly said each time he died. ‘Resetting all NPC relationships.’

We stood up, “You. You know my name?”

“Yes. You are Weed.” Replied the feeble old man.

Weed didn’t say anything else. If his hunch was right, he was definitely on the right path. Weed absolutely had to see what was going to unravel. His childlike curiosity had got the better of him. He continued the abuse and death struggle for the entire two week lock in period.

Weeds pace was considerably slow once many more players started logging on to the game. He had to move in stealth to avoid notice of other players. He would sometimes go to different parts of the city to curse the God. Weed learnt that depending on which part of the city you went to and swore at the God, the cause and severity of illness causing death varied. So in addition to being stealthy and cautious, Weed began mixing in different routes to his menu. But no matter how careful he was, players always took notice of him (especially since he would shout aloud the curses). Some started following, thinking that a new quest or secret was going to be unlocked. But after the first few days everyone players weren’t even sure if Weed was a real player. He always did appear through a flashing light, but that didn’t mean he was a player. Players imagined him to be a high level quest which could only be activated through meeting some other conditions. Weed didn’t bother correcting them, he also didn’t want to ignore them as he was more than happy to play the role of an NPC.

If players offered him items, he would accept them, if players offered him money he would accept them. Weed started making it appear that by giving him items, the players were building relations with an NPC. If the items were highly valuable, he would speak to that player and make up some fantastical tale about a treasure or hidden dungeons. Seeing Weed talk to only those who gave lots of money or high level items, more players started offering Weed money and items. Weed was always more than happy to receive free goods. Who would turn away anything free?

Then on the 8th day of his daily pilgrimage, some players whom Weed had lied to approached him. They were no longer the newbies he knew when he had initially met them. They all wore very angry looks on their faces. They had been tricked and lied to. Weed only blamed them for being fools to think he was an NPC. He only played the role they imagined him to be. They took out their swords and stabbed Weed and left him to die on the streets. They didn’t want to kill him in one hit (they were level 48) as killing humans resulted in being shunned from all cities in a kingdom for 6 months. Weed lay on the street floor. He coughed out blood as he watched his HP reduce. As he closed his eyes …

TRRRIINNGG!!

You have discovered your true nature. Your unique personal quest is now available in the options tab.

Unfortunately with the newbie protection gone. The dead character was locked out for 24 hours. Lee Jun Zhou, removed his VR gear and surfed the net impatiently. Weed was his character and he was dying to know his unique personal quest. When Weed was reborn in the city, he quickly opened his info menu tab and clicked on Unique Personal Quest. In the 8 days of RREV, nearly 1% of all players discovered their nature and unique quests. From what it appeared, there seemed to be three primary categories of nature, Holy White, Grey and Dark. Majority of the players who discovered their nature were in the Grey category: their quests tended to revolve around raise a particular skill or solving some extremely long serial quest. The next largest group was Holy white: their quests were about warding away evil and doing lot’s og good in the game. The rarest of the three was Dark: whose quest related information was vastly a mystery, however as the name suggested most players guessed it required players to commit crimes. Weed was left speechless when he read his personal quest…it was probably amongst the most difficult ones revealed so far in RREV. …
