Chapter --2 | Magic

*ping~!

You have awakened yourself to your mana! Lost trait {Unawakened Quadruple}

Gained trait: {Awakened Quad-Core}

Due to high mana levels and {####’s Blessing} you have started evolution!

Evolution complete!

Slowly I felt myself rising from the comfortable darkness, dull aching pain now filling my awareness. Groaning I attempted to push myself into a sitting position, momentarily forgetting my my tail before adjusting and sweeping it out under me. Man, having a tail is going to be a pain… I sighed and looked around my surroundings.

Besides some obvious changes to my own body nothing changed in the little room… Well, I looked down, If you don’t count the copious amounts of dried blood on the floor. I squirmed uncomfortably and sighed. At least I don’t seem hungry at the moment.

Recollecting the previous events I examined my body. My fur was still white, though some light blue energy crackled silently through it. I was also slightly bigger and more muscled, though still only about 20 cen(centimeter) tall. My claws have become a silvery metal and lightly serrated on the inside curve, my teeth also feel heavier so they might be the same. I sighed and opened up my status.

Let’s see, my maximum level went up and my species changed, though I can’t remember what it was before. I gained mana regen and a mana pool as well. Curiously I tried clicking on the blacked out blessing. *ting~

[####’s Blessing] - Blessing from the goddess of evolution. Has several unknown effects.

Blessing from the goddess of evolution? Umu, I’m guessing that it has to do with my evolutions being infinite. *Ting~ I blinked in surprise and looked at the new window.

[####’s Blessing] - Blessing from the goddess of evolution. Has several unknown effects.

   Known Effects - Infinite Evolutions

Huh, so it updates depending on what I figure out. That’s good to know. Ignoring it for now I opened up all the information I could in my status window.

[Reincarnator] - Massively increases growth and trait acquisition rate.

[Advanced Body] - Increases growth rate. Increases all parameters. Massively boosts senses

[Albino] - Your fur is white and your body is incredibly sensitive to light.

[Noble] - You are of noble heritage, your body and mind is stronger than others.

[Quad-Core (Awakened)] - You have four mana cores capable of refining essence into mana and exerting control over said mana. All four are awakened.

[Steel Fur] - Your fur is made of steel

Not much useful information, though knowing I could use magic was exciting. My defense should also be pretty high considering my [steel fur] trait.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Now then… I looked at the evening dyed lake through the entrance to my alcove, I need to gather food. My stomach growled, badly.

I stood up and walked over to the entrance, the glare of the setting sun causing me to squint my eyes. First I need to make myself some type of spear to catch fish with. Swimming to the near shore I searched for long mostly straight branches, then rough stones I could use to sharpen the spear to a point before hardening them with a light fire.

I completed them within the hour, but even still a bright moon appeared in the sky among the glimmering stars as the sun set. Insects and other animals chirped in the darkness, the stones in the hard packed dirt glowing blue in the moonlight. I sighed and looked up at the sky, at least I can open my eyes comfortably in the darkness, though the moon is kind of bright.

Shaking my head out of my thoughts I waded into the water and focused on my feeling vibrations in the water. A minute passed s I stood perfectly still. Another, three, there! My flashed in the moonlight, the spear smoothly piercing the water and puncturing the fish that curiously swam into the shallows near me. Quickly lifting my spear out of the water I grinned at the ten cen silver fish staked on the end, floundering uselessly in the air.

Quickly I waded back to my alcove and sat down, then dug my claws into the fish’s eye, ending its life with a soft squish.

However I was now posed with a problem. Do I eat the fish raw or try to cook it? If I do the latter I probably had to skin it, and while I had knowledge how I had never actually done it before. What the heck, I shrugged and bit into the fish’s head, its bones crushed under my jaw and wet spongy brain spreading across my tongue.

Surprisingly it didn’t taste that bad, and despite the fish being half as long as I am tall I managed to fit half of it in my stomach before becoming full, bones and all. I hope I don’t get sick from this. Well, I’m a bit too hungry to care at the moment. Strangely enough I’m not tired either, might as well experiment.

Crossing my legs once again I focused on my cores, examining the essence being pulled through them; speaking of which, where does essence come from? My soul? I shook my head, doesn’t matter, focus. The mana being pumped out by my cores was stored all throughout my body, most likely in my cells, and seemed to strengthen my body.

However it appeared I was at full capacity as some mana leaked out of my skin, though it seemed to get caught in my fur- probably the source of the blue sparks occasionally crackling through it. However it also seemed to be amplified by my claws as the weight of mana seemed to get stronger as it leaked out.

I wonder… Swinging my hand through the air I pushed mana out through my claws while envisioning heat. The air rippled behind my claws, a heat wave blasting into the surroundings, flames flickered like sprites and the wall shimmered as the wave hit it; the roots in the wall turning slightly black.

A wide toothy grin spread across my face. I used magic! I quickly checked how much I used. In the spell only the mana in my fingertips had been pushed out, which was quickly replenished by my cores greedily converting essence.

Clenching my hand then opening it with my furry palm facing upwards. Gathering mana I condensed it and formed a long and thin spike. Pointing my palm at the wall I shot the spike with a single exhale, pierce! Only a small thump was released from where the spike silently bore into the wall. Excitedly examing it I failed to see exactly how far it went with another spell I created on the spot, light. The small hole only went through a couple meters, though I didn’t know how far a bullet in real life could travel through earth… Shrugging I moved back to the center of the alcove and focused, this time creating a drill like stake out of my mana, spinning it as fast as I could without losing control then firing it into the wall with a fwiiiiiiii.

Besides a small spirt of dirt I failed to see how far it traveled due to the hole instantly being filled by the dirt behind it, however from the vibrations it made I would say it bore through a couple dozen meters before I lost track of it.

*ting~

You have earned the trait [Mana Manipulation]!

Swiping away the status window I decided to get ready to sleep. Tentively I traveled outside my alcove and onto the shore. Silently I gathered up bundles of leaves and moss, carried them back to my home, and piled them on the ground. Determining I had enough I focused my mana and pulled apart the earth in the ground, condensing it into little cubes of stone and setting it aside. Digging out a couple centimeters of earth I started shoveling the leaves into it before covering it with a layer of moss. *ting~

You have gained the trait [Earth magic]!

I tilted my head, the message only appeared when I stopped working? Interesting and helpful. I probably wouldn’t have to worry about pop-ups in the middle of battle, so that’s a plus. On the other hand there’d probably be no instant notification if I became poisoned. Or maybe there would be?

Dismissing my thoughts I focused on the mana leaking into my fur and repelled the cold water clinging to me, then comfortably laid down to sleep. *ting~

You have gained the trait [Water magic]!

Glaring at the window in annoyance I quickly dismissed it and focused on calming my breathing. However many thoughts cluttured my mind, what if something comes to attack me while I am asleep? How will I defend myself?

Sitting up I decided to try and form a ‘net’ out of my mana that covered my surroundings. The threads connected to me would shake and tramble if anything touched the web around me, similar to how spiders locate prey fallen into their webs. Though mine is not sticky.

Rapidly threads flew from my body and covered all corners of the room, all tracing back to my prone figure sitting on the moss. Carefully I laid my body back down, stretching the threads where I needed to and keeping them all taut.

A bit more mentally secure I finally drifted off to a fitful sleep, plagued by repressed worries of what was to come.
