The night air shimmered as Ian walked across the yard with his eyes locked on the glow emanating from the gully. Bob and John walked abreast of Ian as Marie followed. Instinctively, the men shielded the young woman from the unknown with their bodies, an unknown that seemed dangerous.

A strange coughing noise softly echoed from the woods near the glow, followed by a rustling of the brush to one side of the yard. The actors stopped walking and stood in a cluster of bewildered people peering myopically in the dark.

A door slammed upstairs in the house, loud enough for the actors to hear the noise and turn to face the new distraction. It had to be Turner; any moment, he would come out of the house to correct the situation.
