Forty nine

Men sat motionless.

Computer screens danced lively to different scenes as the men sat staring at nothing, their eyes distant and vacant.

A door swung open on well-oiled hinges, a small form slipping into the room then closing the door.

It moved about the men, touching them as a blind man trying to gain an understanding of a puzzling object. It paid little heed to the computers, but examined a gun held by a man. Its hand recoiled from the cold metal of the weapon.

Eventually, while a scream came from below, the creature stood in the center of the small room and turned slowly in a circle, its enormous eyes taking in every detail of the room.

It hesitated, then placed a small object on the table where near a man’s braced arm.

It left the room. When the door closed, the latch clicked into place and the lock turned.

Except for the small glittering object, it was as if the creature had never entered the small room.
