CHAPTER 72

Erebus first started to rise to gain altitude and slowed down to keep track of the eagle, and it could not immediately understand what Erebus was trying to do, but when Erebus suddenly turned and dived towards it, it realized what Erebus was doing, and it tried to gain altitude too, but it was too late.

As Erebus's body was fed with mana, his speed and muscle strength increased, and even his Feathers began to acquire an unnatural black glow. It was moving towards the eagle like a bullet; I could see the eagle's white eyes now; it was a bizarre sight.

Erebus and the eagle clashed. They were almost the same size, but the eagle was a bit bigger than Erebus, and the fight lasted only a few seconds. The eagle tried to get its giant talons and sharp beak into Erebus' body, but it failed to cause anything but draw a few drops of blood. All its talons and beak managed to do was break his skin a bit. On the contrary, when Erebus grabbed the eagle with his talons, he sliced the eagle like a knife through butter. He almost ripped the eagle's head off.

POV GORNALD THREESKİN (WİLDİNG WARG)

The other warg must not be as powerful as I thought because I don't think he was aware of us following him. The black eagle was still going in a straight line, and I think it was going back to its master. But suddenly, he started to climb up then it charged at me.

As it was getting close, I started to see it more clearly, and it didn't look like an eagle, but what other bird could be this big other than an eagle? It was black all over, other than two white patches on its wings, and had a straight peak. It looks almost like a raven; it can't be...

I don't know what you are, but your master must be overestimating your power if he is making you charge at an eagle bigger than you, pitiful beast. After I kill your master, I’m going to look after you better than him.

When the black bird came close to me, it started to have a black hue all over it; it looked like it was encased in subtle black flames.

The moment we clashed, I tried to claw and bite the place that wouldn't permanently damage the bird, but my eagle couldn't get past its skin. How is this possible? Then an agonizing pain struck my neck, and my connection was lost.

"AHHHH!!"

"Gornald! Jorryn, Baenir hold him! he must have lost his beast. Hold him still until he calms down."

It was an unbearable pain, both physically and emotionally. Losing a beast is like losing a part of yourself; if the beast dies while you are warging, you will feel the beast passing away. If the warg is weak-willed, it could even cause a warg to go insane. If you are not warging with it, it is easier to order them to make a suicide attack. I never thought my eagle would die in one strike.

I stood up with difficulty and was bubbling with anger.

"We are going to hunt down that warg; I don't care if I have to chase him to the end of the north; I will hunt him down!"

Baenir said:

"How do you hope to follow him? You don't even have a flying beast left anymore. All you have left is your bear; how are you going to chase a flying beast with a bear."

"It doesn't matter; I will tame his black bird when we catch him. I have already touched that bird's conciseness; if it is not too far away from me, I will be able to follow it, and It will lead us to its warg."

Jorryn asked:

"What if he has a bigger warband with him? what are we going to do then?"

POV JORRYN THE BRUTE

Things were starting to go wrong; first, we lost our loot and half our men, and now we were going after a warg. We have no idea how strong he is. Gornald has led us to many victories and is one of the strongest wargs I know, but he's not acting like himself this time.

Ever since our defeat at The Gorge, he's been making very irritable and impulsive decisions. For old gods' sake, he lost his beast without even being able to do anything to the other bird, and he still wanted to attack recklessly.

I wonder if we should try to find another warband or, better yet, try to find the so-called king beyond the wall. This man appeared about four years ago out of nowhere and started to become a force that cannot be underestimated by gathering the fragmented and small clans. He calls himself king beyond the wall but still can't compete with other big clans. He may have called himself king, but in the eyes of many free folks, he is a magnar at best.

Naa, if I join any of these, I have to start back from the lowest level in the group, and I'd rather be the head of the dog than the tail of a wolf. In time we will find new men and become a sizeable warband again.

POV MC

Even though we killed the eagle, the 20-man wildling group was still after me, and I had no clue how they were following us. I wonder if wargs have a similar skill to Promodynes (locate animals). There were about 2 km between us, but they were coming at me as if they could see me.

I changed my direction a few more times, and they were still after me, and seeing that too, it was apparent they knew my position for sure, but how did they do it?

If you want to die so badly, I will give you what you want. They kept approaching me while I was planning their arrival, and this time there was an ambush method I wanted to try. this method came to my mind while waiting for mother shadowcat to leave.

First of all, I made a pit using Formotegon ( mold earth ) where the wolf cub, Sith, Berus, and I could fit comfortably.

"Erebus and Poe, you won't make any physical contact when the enemies come, especially Erebus. You're not ready for melee with humans yet. So, your only mission is to distract them, make loud noises, and do fake dives."

"As for you, Poe, you will not engage in melee either, but I want you to use your magic to attack from a distance." it took ten mana to dig the hole and close the top. They were almost here, so I started buffing Poe, Erebus, and myself with str, spd, and stamina, and I even used eludo jelmio (Warding Wind) that will deflect arrows. All those cost me 60 more mana, and I was left with 100 mana. This will be more than enough to deal with 20 men in an ambush.
