CHAPTER 105
288 AC
When I started this war, I decided not to show anyone my magical powers, but every day I spent fighting, I realized that I alone could not stop so many people without magic. Even if I am fit enough, my impact will be greatly diminished if they act indifferently to me. But if I use at least a few familiar spells that don't look like magic, both my share of shock during the war will increase, and the probability of other soldiers listening to me will increase.
If I hadn't declared I was a warg, Jory probably wouldn't have listened to me because being a warg meant that I knew things about the enemy's movement and plans that they didn't. Knowing that I was a warg began to bring another unexpected plus among the soldiers. Standing up against The Seven at Winterfell, my mastery of the sword and bow, and the knowledge that I was a warg on top of it, caused the soldiers to give me a new name. Most of them were calling me Sword of the Old Gods.
.....
Following the raven, Poe finally watched it pass the Ironborn army and enter an abandoned windmill on the shore and perch there, and immediately one of the three men waiting on the waterfront came in and read the message on the raven and immediately mounted his horse and set off to catch up with the moving Ironborn force. When he reached the army, he gave the message to the big man under a banner of a scourge of nettles, red and black, on white.
Since I didn't remember to whom this coat of arms belonged, I used Authenticate, and all of a sudden, the information about this crest flooded into my mind. House Tawney of Orkmont is a noble house from the Iron Islands, one of the strongest sworn to Pyke. But this man can't be Ballon Tawney, and their force can't be this few. As far as I heard, he is someone around 40 name-day, but this man was young, around 20 name-day old. He must be his son or his relative.
The Ironborn forces were resting around a 5 km distance from Deepwood Motte. The Tawney men sat down under a tree and started to read the message; after that turned to the man next to him and said.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
"The numbers have decreased even more than we thought, but a support force of 2000 soldiers will arrive in 5-7 days. Until then, we must burn everything down."
"Darrin, are you sure we can trust this man?"
"Brodin Hoare would sell his own mother if it would bring him 200 gold dragons."
"Are you really going to give him that much gold?"
"Of course, I'm. If I don't, we can't use this tactic again. But after his payment, he is going to have an unforeseen problem of running into a bandit group and dying."
....
I explained our plan for tomorrow to Jory, and he accepted with some modifications. After Jory pointed out many weak points in my plan, I realized I still had many things to learn, and you can't become a general just because you are a history buff. My father was a farmer when I was on Earth, so I had grown on a farm. At a farm after 5 pm, usually, you don't have anything to do, so the History Channel and books were my only friends in the evenings.
.....
The first light of day had begun to break through the hills and forest to the east and hit the Deepwood Motte. The sounds of commotion and panic rose above the wooden walls, and everyone rushed to position themselves on the walls as Ironborn forces were beginning to be clearly visible to the North. There seemed to be around 2600-2800 men. Ironborns also carried 25-30 ladders over 10 meters long. Since Deepwood Motte's walls aren't higher than 10 meters, these ladders will work well to overcome the walls.
POV DARRIN TAWNEY
Our soldiers were hardly experienced in siege and city conquest, so many of them had no idea what to do. We usually make quick looting attacks and retreat, but our task today was not to loot but to inflict as much damage as we could. One of my commanders came to me and said
"My lord, should we signal Brodin so he will open the doors."
"Are you stupid! Why would we waste our trump card at such a useless moment? If we use Brodin now, we can get him to open the door, but only Brodin and his direct soldiers are only on our side, so at most, 50 soldiers. All Northern troops will be heading towards the west gate. Yes, we can overrun them since the gate is open, but we will needlessly lose a lot of soldiers as a result."
I put my helm at the table and sat down.
"We are not making a last stand, so we don't have to force it so much. All we have to do is be done with this before their reinforcement comes."
"Then what should we do, my lord?"
"We are going to attack the north gate with most of our army and only send 700 hundred to the west and south gates to look like our main attack point is north. but when our enemy begins to concentrate his attention and his men at the north gate, then we will attack."
POV JORY CASSEL
I hope our plan works, but my father always says plans only work until the swords touch each other, then the soldiers' mettle will decide the end of the battle. My father was never known for his tactical thinking, but he was well known for his unyielding bullheaded tenacity.
The Ironborns were stationed out of arrow-shooting range and were slowly making their mainline at the North, with 700 or so soldiers advancing towards the west gate. Are they going to use Brodin right away? But half of these 700 soldiers were stationed at the west gate, and the other half continued to the south gate.
At that moment, I understood what they were trying to do, and they acted as if the main point of attack was the North. If I hadn't known their original plans, I would have definitely fallen into this trap and massed most of our soldiers to the North gate. But thanks to Aermir's scouting and familiars, we learned that there is both a spy in our midst and what their estimated attack plan is.
