Qin Feng held Lin Fan, his hand on her head. He didn't know how to start, as it went against science, and he couldn't explain many things himself. After a long silence, he finally said, "He said you won't live long, and it's only because of good karma that you're still alive now."
Lin Fan clung to his clothes, seemingly crying. His shoulder grew damp. Qin Feng's voice was low and heavy, "I don't know if we can trust what he says, but he did mention that being together won't worsen your condition."
Lin Fan lifted her head from his embrace, thinking Qin Feng was talking nonsense. She couldn't make sense of what the doctor had said either.
"Ouyang Yu probably has some abilities, but I don't know his motives. Whether he's good or bad to you, I can't trust him," Qin Feng said, meeting her gaze. He wiped her face with his thumb. "He wants us to be husband and wife to balance yin and yang. You have too much yin energy now, which isn't good for a human. It makes your soul unstable and might attract evil spirits."
Lin Fan was shocked and confused. What kind of doctor was this? It seemed unorthodox.
"Let's talk about this later. We'll go to the hospital tomorrow for a check-up." Her face was very pale. Qin Feng kissed her gently and sighed, resting his chin on her head. "Let's go home."
Lin Fan had another episode earlier, which was quite frightening. When Qin Feng found her, he almost thought she was dying. He was still scared; she was so young, only living for a few years.
Driving home, Lin Fan headed to her room but turned back at the door to look at Qin Feng.
"Go to sleep."
Qin Feng put things away and walked toward the master bedroom. Lin Fan took a deep breath and asked, "Does being husband and wife mean sleeping together?"
Qin Feng stopped in his tracks, turned back, and stared at Lin Fan for a good half-minute. Lin Fan felt a chill down her spine and wanted to run. Qin Feng finally spoke, "It's not just about lying together."
Lin Fan rushed into her room and shut the door heavily. She leaned against the door, clutching her chest, and shakily took out her phone to search online. What do men and women do together? Kiss? Hug? Just as she opened the search engine, there was a knock on the door. Startled, she dropped her phone, quickly picked it up, and opened the door. Qin Feng stood outside, squinting slightly at her, "My mom bought you some clothes." Qin Feng handed her the bag and pointed inside. "There's underwear in there. You're grown up now, so you should wear them. Alright, go to sleep."
Lin Fan was confused but quickly nodded.
Qin Feng turned and left. Lin Fan shut the door and opened the bag, finding everything pink. She dumped the clothes on her bed, finding a dress and—she quickly stuffed the bra into the covers, her face burning.
She had never worn something like this before. What did it mean? Qin Feng wanted her to wear this? It was so embarrassing!
The dress was pretty, but Lin Fan had never worn one before and was afraid of the cold, so she hung it in the closet. After her bath, she took out the pink bra from under the covers. She checked to ensure the curtains were closed and tried it on under the covers. It felt strange, with her chest squeezed into shape.
She quickly took it off and threw it back into the covers, covering her face. She had seen her female classmates wear them, but her grandmother said she was still young and didn't need to. No one in her village wore such things, small and wrapping around the chest, in a tender pink color.
Would people scold her? Would they say she was a flirt? Would they laugh at her?
The next morning, Lin Fan got up first. She made breakfast, and Qin Feng came out, "Up so early?"
Lin Fan lowered her head, drinking her porridge. "Want some breakfast?"
Qin Feng sat down across from her, serving himself porridge and some cakes. "Why is your face red so early in the morning?"
Lin Fan shook her head and continued drinking her porridge.
Qin Feng didn't pay much attention to her face and said, "After breakfast, let's go to the hospital."
Lin Fan responded with an "okay," quickly finishing her meal and hunching her shoulders to take her bowl to the kitchen. Qin Feng thought about her injuries, wondering if they hadn't healed properly. "Are your wounds completely healed?"
"Yes." Lin Fan turned to run to her room, but Qin Feng stopped her, "Stand up straight. Don't hunch."
Stolen novel; please report.
Lin Fan blushed and dashed into her room. Qin Feng couldn't understand her behavior. After finishing his meal and cleaning up, he called his office to take a day off, then called out to Lin Fan, "Let's go. Bring your medical records."
Lin Fan put on an extra jacket, grabbed her bag, and came out. She still walked with a hunch all the way to the garage. What was wrong with her? Qin Feng stopped, and Lin Fan almost bumped into him, quickly looking up. "What's wrong?"
Qin Feng straightened her up, examining her. "Why are you hunching like this?"
Lin Fan didn't know where to look. "Don't ask, let's go."
Qin Feng found her rare act of shyness amusing and refused to let her go. "What's going on?"
Lin Fan said, "Let go of me, and I'll go."
"If you don't tell me, you won't leave today."
Lin Fan couldn't free herself from Qin Feng's grip, so she gave up. After a few seconds of staring him down, she admitted defeat. Glancing around to make sure no one was watching, she leaned in close to Qin Feng. "It's just... the clothes feel weird."
"What clothes?" Qin Feng was puzzled.
Lin Fan motioned with her chin, mustering the courage to ask, "Isn't it too big and strange?"
Qin Feng looked at her oversized clothes, holding back his laughter. "You can't really tell."
"Really?" Lin Fan asked.
Qin Feng turned his head away, trying to contain his amusement. He had indeed asked his mother to buy some clothes for Lin Fan. He turned and walked briskly towards the car, struggling to hold back his laughter.
Lin Fan chased after him, covering her face. "Qin Da Ge?"
"Get in the car."
Lin Fan got in, and Qin Feng sat in the driver's seat, glancing at her. "You don't need to hunch over. No one can tell even if you stand straight."
Lin Fan: "..."
After a busy day of tests, the results wouldn't be available until the next day. Qin Feng and Lin Fan sat in a restaurant for dinner when Qin Feng's mother's call came through. He answered it.
"Come by tonight. I bought a few clothes for Xiao Lin. You can bring them back," his mother said, talking at length. "You shouldn't make that poor girl suffer like this. Look at what she's wearing."
Lin Fan placed a peeled shrimp in front of Qin Feng before removing her gloves. Qin Feng looked at the obedient Lin Fan across from him and replied, "I'll pick them up later."
"If you need anything, just tell me. Don't let Xiao Lin suffer. She's such a sweet girl. If you don't want to pamper her, send her here. Your dad and I will treat her like a daughter—she's so adorable."
"I know, Mom. We're having dinner."
"Don't always eat out; it's not good for your health. Xiao Lin is still growing. Come home when you have time, and I'll make soup for you both."
"Okay."
He hung up and looked at Lin Fan. "You don't eat shrimp?"
"No."
Qin Feng ate the shrimp she had peeled. "My mom bought you some more clothes. We'll pick them up later."
"Sorry to trouble Auntie," Lin Fan said, sipping her soup. She looked up, her dark eyes shining like stars. "I don't really wear dresses. It's a waste. You should tell her not to buy any more."
"If she wants to buy them, let her. She enjoys buying things for girls."
Lin Fan was resigned to it; having money certainly had its perks.
The next day, they got the test results, which again showed no issues. Qin Feng had to go to work, so Lin Fan stood outside the hospital for a while before hailing a taxi.
It was difficult to get a taxi here. After five minutes of waiting, she was about to head to the subway when a black Mercedes pulled up, honking its horn. Lin Fan stepped onto the sidewalk, but the car continued to honk.
Turning back, she saw the familiar license plate and felt a headache coming on. She started to run but suddenly couldn't move her feet. She froze, realizing Ouyang Yu dared to act so boldly in broad daylight.
Ouyang Yu got out of the car and approached. Lin Fan saw him coming closer out of the corner of her eye, frowning. Ouyang Yu finally reached her, putting a hand on her shoulder in what appeared to be a friendly gesture to outsiders. Leaning in close to her ear, he said, "The hospital can't cure your illness. Why don't you believe me?"
Lin Fan felt nauseous and almost threw up. "Let go of me."
Ouyang Yu scooped her up, and Lin Fan immediately screamed, "Help!"
People around them started to look. Lin Fan yelled, "Help! This man drugged me, and I can't move. Someone help me!"
"Ouyang Xiansheng," a voice called from behind. Lin Fan saw Ouyang Yu's expression change. His face turned sinister. He put Lin Fan down and turned to look.
Lin Fan regained her ability to move. She was about to run when she saw the man approaching. She had seen him before. She and Qin Feng had visited him, and he had said she didn't have long to live.
The man, holding a blind cane and dressed in simple clothes, walked over. Lin Fan ran to hide behind him, pulling out her phone to call Qin Feng.
Ouyang Yu's eyes narrowed, becoming filled with malice. "What's it to you?"
"A friend's request. Please, Ouyang Xiansheng, show some respect."
"You?" Ouyang Yu raised his chin. "Are you worthy?"
Qin Feng answered the call. Lin Fan said, "I'm at the hospital entrance. Can you come?"
"Okay."
He didn't ask what was wrong. Lin Fan heard his footsteps through the phone and didn't hang up. She clung to the man's arm, watching Ouyang Yu warily. Ouyang Yu sneered. "Fine, very fine!"
Qin Feng must have heard Ouyang Yu's voice. The man stood in front of Lin Fan, facing Ouyang Yu. "Past life grievances should stay in the past. In this life, she has no connection with you."
"Get out of the way!" Ouyang Yu roared, his voice booming. The sunny sky quickly turned overcast. He glared at Lin Fan, speaking each word slowly, "Come here."
Lin Fan felt an overwhelming pressure. She didn't know Ouyang Yu, but she was sure she hadn't met him before renting the house. Yet, she felt an eerie familiarity that frightened and pained her. "Who are you?"
"I said, come here. Be good, and I won't punish you."
A bolt of lightning cracked across the sky, dark clouds rolling in. Ouyang Yu moved swiftly, appearing in front of Lin Fan in an instant. She swung her backpack at him, and the man's cane blocked Ouyang Yu's next move. "Ouyang Xiansheng, let's be reasonable."
"Move!" Ouyang Yu swung his hand, but the man twisted his cane, drawing a sword and thrusting it forward. Ouyang Yu hadn't expected him to have some skills and had to lean back to dodge, sliding over two meters away. The road became empty, devoid of people and cars, falling silent.
