Chapter 33

Chapter 33

Lin Fan got off at the next stop and called Qin Feng, but his phone was switched off. She hailed a taxi to go to the police station, and the two ghosts didn't follow her. Lin Fan felt that these two ghosts were strange and not like good spirits.

It was already 10 o'clock at night when Lin Fan finally reached Qin Feng by phone after getting off the taxi.

"Qin Ge, it's Lin Fan."

"Yeah, what's up?"

"Have you made a mistake?"

"Where are you?" Qin Feng asked.

"At the police station entrance, I've come to find you."

"Don't move, wait for me." He hung up the phone.

Lin Fan put her phone in her pocket, feeling the warm breeze in the air. After about five minutes, Qin Feng arrived in a hurry. He was wearing a black t-shirt and casual jeans, with a tall and straight figure.

"Qin Ge."

Qin Feng saw Lin Fan. "Whose soul did you see?"

"Su Changqing."

Qin Feng frowned. "What's the relationship between Su Changqing and Xu Yi?"

"What Xu Yi?"

"Let's talk in the office."

They went into Qin Feng's office, and Qin Feng handed Lin Fan a glass of water, sitting across from her and repeating the case. "If the deceased is Su Changqing, how does the DNA match?"

"He didn't say, but he seemed very afraid of that uncle."

Qin Feng looked at her with dark eyes. Lin Fan's brain raced. "Should I go back and ask?"

"Can you still find them now? It's dangerous at night. Let's go back first."

"Aren't you anxious to solve the case?"

"Not in a hurry for now." Qin Feng stood up and put on his coat. "Let's go."

He went to the crime scene again. Bloodstains were found in the living room, consistent with Xu Yi's. All signs pointed to Su Changqing, but Su Changqing was dead.

Qin Feng didn't walk fast, seemingly to match Lin Fan's short legs. Lin Fan quickened her pace. "Under what circumstances would DNA be the same?"

"Twin brothers from the same egg, it's unlikely but possible."

Lin Fan thought of Su Changqing's face. He was younger than Xu Yi and didn't look like him.

"Have you had dinner?" Qin Feng asked her.

"I've already eaten."

When they reached the parking lot, Lin Fan fastened her seatbelt in the passenger seat. "Was that dead uncle gay?"

Qin Feng grunted. "Probably."

Lin Fan understood why he didn't want the murderer to be found. For him, reputation was indeed more important than life. She felt sorry but didn't show it, thinking about Su Changqing.

"Was Su Changqing his lover?"

"I don't know."

"Who killed him in the end?"

"It's possible that Su Changqing did." Qin Feng looked at the autopsy report again. Zhu Mao was definitely killed by Su Changqing, without a doubt. Whether the burnt person in the car was Su Changqing or Xu Yi was a puzzle.

Could Su Changqing and Xu Yi be brothers? Although they didn't look very alike, it wasn't impossible. They would have to change their investigative direction if that were the case.

They arrived home at 11 o'clock. Qin Feng threw his coat on the floor when entering. "Can you cook?"

Lin Fan nodded. "What's wrong?"

"I haven't eaten yet." Qin Feng walked briskly to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and saw several bags of instant noodles, feeling a headache. "Did you buy these instant noodles?"

"Eating out is expensive." Lin Fan said embarrassedly. "So I bought instant noodles."

Qin Feng took a bottle of water and took a big sip. "Is there not enough money?"

Lin Fan quickly shook her head. "There's still enough."

Lin Fan is as thrifty as a penny-pincher, holding onto every penny tightly, afraid of spending it all. Qin Feng looked at her and saw Lin Fan wearing a short-sleeved denim shorts, thin as a beanpole.

"Feel free to use anything in the kitchen. Let me know if anything is missing," Qin Feng said.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Lin Fan nodded eagerly. "Got it. Do you want instant noodles? I can cook."

Qin Feng sat down on the living room sofa, picked up his phone, and sent a message to Dr. Liu, the forensic pathologist. "Could Su Changqing and Xu Yi be biological brothers? Is this a possibility? Could it be that Su Changqing is the deceased, and Xu Yi is the murderer?"

There were still eggs in the fridge. Lin Fan took some eggs and instant noodles into the kitchen.

Qin Feng turned on the TV, and just as he did, his phone rang. He answered it.

"What have you discovered?"

"I suspect the deceased is Su Changqing," Qin Feng said. "I remember a previous case where something similar happened—DNA matches, but not the same person."

"It's rare, and what makes you suspect that person isn't Xu Yi? What evidence do you have?"

"No evidence yet. Still investigating."

"The case has been reported. If it turns out there's another possibility, it's a mistake."

"It involves human lives, so it's better to be cautious. If there's a mistake, we need to rectify it promptly." The room started to smell of noodles, awakening Qin Feng's hunger. "Let's talk about this tomorrow."

After hanging up, Qin Feng walked into the kitchen. He hadn't used the kitchen since moving in. Standing at the kitchen door with his arms crossed, he watched Lin Fan. She seemed quite domesticated.

Lin Fan served the noodles into bowls and turned around, startled to see Qin Feng. "When did you come in?"

Qin Feng took the noodles to the living room without going to the dining room. "Do you want some?"

Lin Fan shook her head. "I'm not hungry."

The TV was showing midnight news, full of trivial matters. Lin Fan sat beside Qin Feng, watching him with her eyes rolling around. After finishing his noodles, Qin Feng looked up. "What are you looking at?"

Lin Fan's face flushed suddenly. "I have something to do, just wait a moment." She hurried back to her room to get her transfer documents, then came out and placed them on the table. "You mentioned last time that you needed these transfer documents. I haven't given them to you yet."

Qin Feng took the documents and glanced at them. "I remember. I'll deal with this after finishing this case."

As he picked up his bowl and headed to the kitchen, Lin Fan stood up and followed. "Shall I wash the dishes?"

"No need. Go to bed."

There was no bathroom in the guest room, so Lin Fan had to go to the living room to shower. Fortunately, Qin Feng soon returned to his room. Lin Fan lay in bed, thinking about the case. Could the murderer be Xu Yi? Where is Xu Yi now? The relationship between those two ghosts was strange. The old man remained serious and silent, while Su Changqing seemed afraid of him and dared not say anything.

The next day, she woke up early. Qin Feng hadn't left yet. After washing up, Lin Fan saw Qin Feng putting on his clothes and heading out, still holding his phone. When he saw Lin Fan, he paused, turned around, went back to his room to put on his clothes properly, then came out.

Lin Fan silently averted her gaze. Qin Feng had a good figure, with no extra fat around his waist. After wiping her face, she went back to her room to get her bag and jacket.

Qin Feng hung up the phone and hurried to the door, with Lin Fan following with her bag. "Did you get any clues?" she asked.

Qin Feng put on his shoes, opened the door, and said, "Still investigating."

"Do you need any help?"

"No need."

Lin Fan changed her shoes and locked the door, following Qin Feng into the elevator, holding onto her backpack strap. "Then I'll go to work."

Qin Feng remembered something, took out his wallet, opened it, and took out a wad of cash, handing it to Lin Fan. "Take this for now."

Lin Fan quickly stepped back, refusing to take the money. "I don't need money."

Qin Feng frowned. "Lin Fan."

Lin Fan clenched her fists, standing straight. "I can earn money myself. I don't want it."

After a brief silence, Qin Feng put the money back into his wallet. When the elevator doors opened, he walked away without looking back. Lin Fan opened her mouth, wondering if he was angry. Why would he be angry?

By the time Lin Fan reached the gate of the community, Qin Feng had disappeared. Lin Fan felt a little choked up, not knowing why. Why did he suddenly give her money for no reason? Lin Fan already owed him a lot, so taking money wasn't appropriate.

Finally, the bus arrived. Just as she grabbed the handrail, she suddenly felt dizzy and fell to the ground. In her last moments of consciousness, she heard someone screaming.

When she opened her eyes, the sudden bright light made her quickly shut them again.

"Lin Fan?"

A familiar voice, deep and mellow.

Lin Fan opened her eyes again, her vision gradually clearing, and the person in front of her became recognizable. Qin Feng's face was dark and gloomy. "Can you see me?"

Lin Fan nodded, then began coughing violently, as if the world was collapsing. Qin Feng poured her some water and helped her sit up, holding the glass to her lips.

After the coughing fit subsided, Lin Fan still leaned against him, feeling slightly uncomfortable. "Qin Ge."

Qin Feng adjusted the bed to a higher position and placed a pillow behind her before sitting back down. He had a five o'clock shadow and rubbed his face before speaking. "You've been unconscious for two days."

His gaze was profound, indicating he wasn't lying.

Lin Fan felt nothing. How could it be two days already? She furrowed her brows. "So long? What happened to me?"

"Don't know, haven't figured it out yet."

Lin Fan had passed out on the bus and was taken to the hospital. With only Qin Feng's number in her contacts, she called him.

Lin Fan suddenly remembered what Ouyang Yu had said about living in the Ghost Building, how it could extend her life. She glanced at Qin Feng again, from his face down to his fingers, wanting to touch his hand but hesitated.

"I haven't been feeling well lately," Qin Feng said.

Lin Fan shook her head, her heart pounding as she looked at Qin Feng. Could it be true that she didn't have much time left to live? Was she going to die? She was only eighteen, was she going to die like this?

"What's wrong?" Qin Feng asked.

"Nothing."

Ouyang Yu said living in the Ghost Building would be good for her, could help her live longer. Lin Fan looked at Qin Feng again, from his face down to his fingers, wanting to touch his hand but hesitated.

"If you're hungry, it's probably not serious," Qin Feng said, reclining in his chair with his hands behind his head, squinting at her.

Lin Fan felt uneasy under his gaze and desperately searched for a topic. "Did they catch the murderer of the old man?"

"Caught him. It was Xu Yi," Qin Feng said, shifting positions but still casual. "Your condition doesn't look good. No one faints for no reason. Tomorrow I'm going to B City on a business trip. You're coming with me for a check-up. If one hospital can't figure it out, we'll try another."

"No need," Lin Fan protested.

"What do you mean 'no need'?" Qin Feng's gaze turned sharp. "No refusing. Listen to me."

Lin Fan fell silent, not daring to say more. Qin Feng was much more formidable than her father. Lin Fan wouldn't dare defy him, let alone argue with him.

"Are you hungry?" Qin Feng asked.

Lin Fan rubbed her stomach and replied honestly, "Yes."

"Stay put. I'll go out and get some food. Don't move around."

Lin Fan nodded obediently. "Thank you, Qin Ge."

Qin Feng stood up, glanced at her, and reached out to rub Lin Fan's pale face. He wanted to say something, but he held back, feeling it inappropriate. His voice lowered. "You're still young, and life is long. Falling ill would be a lifelong matter."

His hand was rough and not gentle, and Lin Fan almost cried from his touch. Her nose tingled, and tears welled up in her eyes as she hugged Qin Feng's hand and buried her face in it.

Tears streamed down her face. Qin Feng reminded her so much of her grandmother.
