Chapter 20

Chapter 20

The breakfast stall wasn't far, and Qin Feng ordered soy milk and fried dough sticks. He pulled out a chair and sat down, pushing the soy milk towards Lin Fan.

"After we finish eating, I'll take you home."

Lin Fan stirred the soy milk, stole a glance at Qin Feng, then quickly averted her eyes. This repeated three times, and Qin Feng finished his dough sticks, wiped his hands, and looked at her.

"Speak."

Lin Fan put down her spoon. "What do you think about me applying to the police academy?"

"Not great," Qin Feng replied, drinking his soy milk.

The breakfast stall gradually filled up with more people, the background noise increasing. Qin Feng finished his soy milk and stood up.

"I have to head back to the station," he said.

Lin Fan tilted her head up. "Why not me?"

Qin Feng looked at her face, paused mid-step, and then said, "The soy milk has gone cold."

He walked away quickly, leaving Lin Fan sighing and continuing to drink her soy milk.

On the third day, the case was finally closed. Lin Zhe's mistress was caught by the police at the airport when she returned to the country. Her face, swollen from surgery, was unrecognizable. She didn't have much courage and was only with Lin Zhe for the money, so she spilled everything after a little intimidation.

Lin Fan took on two more jobs, leaving the house at 7 in the morning and staying busy until 8 in the evening, earning a little more. She made up her mind to continue her education and apply to the police academy.

If her special ability could help catch criminals quickly and prevent more people from being harmed, then she was willing. The incident in Xu Prefecture had a big impact on Lin Fan; if she had discovered and intervened earlier, things wouldn't have escalated to the worst-case scenario.

Lin Fan took out her books from the bottom of her bag and started reviewing them.

On May 25th, Lin Fan left the homeowner's house. The sky was heavily overcast, and as soon as she reached the bus stop, it started pouring rain. The bus was late, and Lin Fan's body was half-soaked. She huddled against the advertisement board, shivering.

Her phone rang, and Lin Fan wiped off the water from the screen. It was Qin Feng calling, so she answered.

"Hello?"

"Where are you?"

Lin Fan gave the address and asked, "What's up?"

"The Town Ghost Talisman has been found. Stay where you are; I'll come pick you up."

Before Lin Fan could say anything, the call ended.

The night was dark, and the rain poured heavily. Lin Fan stamped her feet and put her phone back in her bag.

Twenty minutes later, a police car pulled up. Qin Feng's face appeared through the open window, and he held out an umbrella as he got out of the car. Lin Fan opened the car door and sat inside. Qin Feng closed the door and handed her the tissue box.

"Why are you here?"

This area was an upscale community, and Lin Fan definitely couldn't afford to live here.

Lin Fan wiped the water off her face and hesitated, "I'm still working as a cleaner."

Qin Feng withdrew his gaze and started the car. "Is the pay good?"

"Yeah."

"How much do you make in a month?"

Lin Fan looked at the heavy rain hitting the windshield, changing the subject, "What's the matter? Where are we going?"

"The Town Ghost Talisman has been found."

Lin Fan quickly looked at Qin Feng. "Where?"

"Lin Zhe's hometown. His parents have the Town Ghost Talisman."

He mentioned a county name, and Lin Fan was surprised. "It's quite close to my home."

"Yes, you mentioned seeing such a talisman before, so I thought I'd take a look."

Lin Fan lifted her gaze and glanced at the cheap digital watch. "It's already late; do we need to go now?"

"Yes, we need to leave tomorrow morning."

There was no work scheduled for tomorrow morning, so Lin Fan could go, but it was so sudden. However, she was also very interested in the Town Ghost Talisman, so she couldn't refuse.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

"What can I do?"

"All the Town Ghost Talismans in the world look the same, only you can distinguish the differences."

The rain pounded on the car windows, creating a steady beat, and the headlights illuminated darkness at the end of the road.

Lin Fan smirked; it seemed she still had some usefulness.

She set her bag down and turned to look out the window. "Do you know Ouyang?"

Lin Fan turned back. "Ouyang Yu?"

Qin Feng nodded. "The car seen on the surveillance footage that day belonged to him."

Qin Feng also knew him? Lin Fan's mind raced. She firmly believed Ouyang was a bad guy, while Qin Feng was a policeman, a good guy.

Lin Fan swallowed. "He's the landlord of the old building on Zhongming Road."

Qin Feng frowned. "Him? A landlord?"

"Yeah."

Qin Feng pondered, falling silent.

"Do you know him?"

"Hardly anyone in Jiangcheng doesn't know him. He's a businessman, wealthy."

The last two labels were quite clear. Lin Fan searched for Ouyang Yu on her phone and was shocked by the results. Indeed, he was wealthy, extremely wealthy.

Putting her phone away, she asked, "What was he doing at the scene?"

"He has a property there, and he happened to be in the underground parking lot that day."

Lin Fan furrowed her brow; it seemed too coincidental. Ouyang Yu always seemed shady to her.

"That's too coincidental."

Qin Feng tapped the steering wheel and rolled down the window to let the wind in. Just as he was about to speak, his phone rang. Qin Feng answered.

"There's been a homicide, five dead. The local police are requesting assistance."

"What location?"

Qin Feng turned the steering wheel and stopped the car by the roadside.

After ending the call, he looked at Lin Fan. "There's been a homicide; I need to go. We'll check the Town Ghost Talisman another day."

"A homicide? Where?"

It was the same county they were supposed to go to. Qin Feng made a call to the coroner, then hung up and said to Lin Fan, "I'll take you back."

"Can I go with you?" Lin Fan proposed a bold idea. "I can take leave from work."

Qin Feng paused in his action of starting the car and looked at her.

"Can I? Maybe I can help."

"What about your job?"

"I can take leave," Lin Fan said. "Could I go to the crime scene?"

After a brief silence, Qin Feng started the car and headed towards the police station. "Fine, but you have to follow all instructions and not touch anything."

Lin Fan nodded quickly. "I won't touch anything, I'll follow your lead."

He returned to the station to pick up a colleague and the coroner, Dr. Liu.

As soon as Dr. Liu got into the car, he was about to complain but then noticed Lin Fan and froze. "This girl?"

"Then with those judgmental eyes, he looked at Qin Feng and chuckled, 'Qin Team, are you finally blossoming?'"

"Don't talk nonsense. She can see things we can't. Bring her along to take a look," Qin Feng replied.

Lin Fan turned her head. "Hello."

Dr. Liu shook hands with her. "You said there's a child on my shoulder. Is that true? My shoulder has been hurting badly these past few days. Could it be because of the child?"

Lin Fan stifled a laugh and turned to look out the window.

Qin Feng tapped the steering wheel, seeming to be in a good mood.

They arrived at the county town by 10:30, rain still pouring. Qin Feng handed Lin Fan an umbrella, then stepped out into the rain. The others followed suit, and Lin Fan hurriedly got out of the car.

The county police station was brightly lit. Qin Feng met with the chief.

"The victims have been dead for three days, poisoned. But finding the perpetrator is proving difficult; we have no leads."

"Where are the bodies? Have the coroner's reports and victim details brought over," Qin Feng ordered.

"You're not resting? Why not handle the case tomorrow? We've arranged accommodations."

"We'll rest after seeing the bodies."

"They're at the funeral parlor; we can go there now."

The county's morgue was not well-equipped, so the bodies were kept at the funeral parlor.

The county wasn't big; they reached the funeral parlor in fifteen minutes. When getting out of the car, the guiding officer noticed Lin Fan behind Qin Feng. "Is she coming in too?"

Qin Feng also just remembered Lin Fan. He turned back to her. "Why don't you wait in the car?"

"I want to see. Can I?" Lin Fan asked.

Dr. Liu said, "Let her. It won't harm the bodies. Come in."

Qin Feng shrugged. "Follow me."

The mortuary was cold, and Lin Fan rubbed her arms as she entered. Five bodies were quickly brought out. Lin Fan retreated half a step behind Qin Feng upon seeing them. Qin Feng glanced at her.

"It's a family, an elderly person, two children, and a couple. They were poisoned and died between the 22nd and 23rd. Their bodies are here; we'll visit the scene tomorrow."

After being frozen, the bodies looked ghastly, but Lin Fan couldn't see their souls.

She circled the bodies. The youngest child was only a year and a half old. Lin Fan couldn't bear seeing such young children dead, especially with the visible injuries.

"Big Brother Qin," Lin Fan tugged at Qin Feng's sleeve, "why does this child have knife wounds?"

"Autopsy," Qin Feng replied, noticing her hand. Lin Fan quickly withdrew it.

The mortuary seemed to be filled with souls, so Lin Fan didn't dare look around much. After a cursory examination, they left, and it was already 1 a.m.

They headed straight to the hotel. The guiding officer said, "I thought there were three of you, so I booked a triple room. Let me check if there are any other available rooms."

Accommodations were limited in the small county town, so Lin Fan quickly said, "It's okay, I'll just find somewhere to sleep. Don't trouble yourselves."

Dr. Liu yawned. "We have to visit the scene tomorrow morning, so let's just make do and sleep."

Qin Feng frowned but didn't say much.

The room had three beds. Lin Fan took the small one by the window, and the other two were pushed together for the other three.

After a night of traveling, they soon snored loudly. Lin Fan covered her ears and buried her head under the covers. It was too painful; their snoring could lift the roof off the house.

She got up in the dark, took out her phone for light, and headed to the bathroom. Exhausted, she regretted not sleeping in the lobby instead. Their snores were terrifying. As she sat on the toilet, she sent a text to her manager requesting leave.

After sending the message, Lin Fan rubbed her eyes and yawned, straightened her clothes, and went out, catching sight of a little girl suddenly appearing in the mirror. Startled, she quickly turned around.

The girl in white disappeared.

The girl was wearing white mourning clothes, and Lin Fan's back broke out in a cold sweat. That was the girl she had seen at the mortuary earlier. She rubbed her neck, opened the door, and went out. There was a light outside.

The room smelled of smoke, and Qin Feng was looking at his phone. When he heard the noise, he looked up and casually stubbed out his cigarette.

He was wearing a tank top and trousers, his muscular arms visible. Lin Fan quickly averted her gaze and climbed into bed, pulling the covers over herself.

Qin Feng got up and walked towards the bathroom, causing Lin Fan's heart to race. The background noise of Dr. Liu and Xiao Wang's deafening snores filled the room. Lin Fan lowered her voice. "I think I just saw that little girl again."

"Which one?" Qin Feng's gaze shifted.

"The one from the mortuary, the girl."
