XIII - Storm and antiquity

XIII - Storm and antiquity

I looked sideways through the surrounding grasses and bushes, waiting to see that there were no suspicious signs on the new visual map that had been updated since Rosalina had managed to encode the message. The map looked on the screen much more accurate and wider than the map that was compiled only from my memory. Only by luck was I able to get to the airport if the previous map, but now, not only is the map much more accurate in my opinion, but now the distance I have to travel is a hundred times greater, I think.

I looked at the map again and saw that there were no suspicious signs on it, so I set out if all the equipment along the wall that surrounded the place like a secret area, I tried my luck, especially after the hole I created to enter is now impassable due to the sinkhole that was created, so thanks to the route they created for me, I just have to follow the wall now to find the exit, and if by chance he comes back to haunt me, I'll just try to hide better.

I continued to move by the great wall as I pass through the wide surface of the place, looking everywhere to try to maybe find something interesting or useful, but all this walking and the sky began to cloud over, easing my walk from the blazing sun. Admittedly, I was starting to get bored with all the steps left behind, but it seems that the world has other plans as the weather started to turn rainy. Thanks to the suit, I don't mind the rain that was falling hard, but the walking became more difficult as mud started forming everywhere and then I tripped and fell forward.

It gave me a slight shock, but all the weight of the equipment I was carrying made it not only difficult for me to get back up, but they also started to make me sink deeper into the mud that was only getting thicker and thicker. I try to crawl and shake myself while the rain only got stronger. I started trying to move my arms to the sides and try to release the cables that connected all the storage compartments until at the end of one of the sides it managed to free itself and I quickly slid out of the equipment. All I did now was watch all my stuff start to sink into the same place I had just managed to get away from. While the rain just continued to fall and the place turned into one big puddle, I started trying to lift the equipment from the place, but I couldn't.

"The thing has become heavier" I said to myself and only then did I notice that the water had penetrated some of the cells. I knew right away that this was a recipe for disaster that I started instead of picking up and dragging him out of the puddle that had formed. Pulling and pulling, I was able to slowly pull him straight to me until I was able to get him out of there and saw the damage:

"Oh no, oh no!" I lifted all the equipment vertically so that I could open the cells without the rain reaching the cells and I started trying to look at each cell while some of them leaked all the water that had accumulated until dark and one of my concerns was realized - the printer that prints the printed food was completely soaked in water. I started there on top of the equipment and started to find shelter from the rain that shows no signs of weakening.

"There is a shelter not far from here" Rosalina pointed out and I already saw the location on the map - a small building, but I guess that's enough for me to escape. After an easy run almost several times I slipped, but the laser markers that emanated from the suit focused me on where to step until I finally arrived at a small building compared to the other buildings I'd seen so far. The building looks old and cracked everywhere, there are no other buildings that I can reach. But in my opinion, it's good enough to hide in and check the damage.

I found the door but it was sealed, and while the water was running down my suit, I took out my knife and pierced the lock that was on it. This made it come loose and I was able to open it to the sides. I quickly entered the place and tried to close the door back, but it cannot be locked in place, so I put the equipment on it and with it, I was able to close it. I turned on the headlights and started to see where I was. The whole place was stale and dirty with dust and volcanic gray ash until I couldn't recognize what was in front of me. I currently focused back on the stack of storage cells and started opening them again one by one. In each of them, I was able to see that they were washed with water and began to drain all the water they had stored in them. Inside some of them, I was able to check the part of the equipment that was washed away: plasma cartridges, salt batteries, and printing food, but luckily they were all undamaged, but when I examined the printer in-depth, it was so soaked in water that I was afraid to turn it on. I asked Rosalina to scan it:

"I'm afraid the printer is no longer usable," she confirmed

"This is bad" I felt mortified: "I will need to start fighting for my life to eat now"

"Possible, if you don't find another one or fix it"

"To find I'm afraid it will take too much of my time I don't know how long I'll last. I'd rather eat the printable food as it is than try to hunt again"

"It is not recommended to consume them in this way"

"I still don't understand why they didn't make them so they could be eaten like this?"

"It's designed for maximum preservation, especially those that are adapted for an emergency as you found"

"I must be unlucky that I could only find this kind and now they are useless!"

I began to disassemble the small printer with the invention of the machine tool and remove the parts from it. Most of them were soaked in water and I took out the card which is particularly sensitive to moisture and another component that was destroyed by most of the water absorbed into the system. Without engineering knowledge or even proper replacement tools with Rosalina's help, I am unable to repair it. I was bummed and a bit annoyed as I put things back in place and checked each compartment they are all completely locked and while even thunder has started to be heard now, I don't think it's a good idea to go out anytime soon, so right now I'm stuck here.

I took off the whole suit and checked that there was no additional damage that I have to worry about. Rosalina confirmed that there was no critical damage except for a few flat, non-threatening puncture marks from the Rex. My skin was covered with bruises and small wounds all over my body, especially on my back and limbs. Unfortunately, I don't have first aid so if something worse happened, I think I would have been lost, so thanks to the suit, I have been spared from more serious things until now. After a short thought, I decided to try to look around and try to see if there was anything.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

I began to move deeper and deeper into the dirty building and in front of me stood something that resembled a hill covered in ash and dust and several chests scattered around his hands on which were placed several things that I could not recognize from afar. I took the opportunity to get closer but dust started to spread and since I wasn't wearing the suit, I started sneezing hard and tried with my hands to spread them away from my face, but the amount was too much. I moved away from the place a bit before it all started to sink back in and moved back. In one of the dressers, I noticed some old boxes and started looking at them. One of them contained old booklets of machines, ones that seemed to have been printed more than decades ago and not a hologram as I know. There were lots of pictures of machines, cars, and what looked like old engines, but I couldn't make out what they said. The language is similar to English, but it is so different. I decided to ignore them and continued walking around among the boxes that were in the scattered chests most of them were empty but when I got to the last box that was next to the hill, there were hidden strange tools that I had never encountered before. I held one of them. It is a dummy screwdriver with a thin iron rod and I put my hand in another tool where it looks like a flat piece of steel with 2 teeth on each side. I didn't recognize them so I went back to the suit to ask Rosalina about them:

"These are a manual screwdriver and a wrench" Rosalina replied

"These are for turning screws?! I'm sorry, I just haven't come across such tools"

"These are old tools that people used to mess with machines more than 130 years ago, before the introduction of all-powerful tools and android mechanics and nanobot analysis"

"130 years! I think I came across a building that contains collectibles! No wonder I couldn't understand what I was seeing in front of me" I put the equipment back in place and then I came across the hill of dust and ash and it started scattering the particles everywhere. I coughed from the large amount that was dispersed to the point that I moved away from the area and waited for them to disperse. But if they remained in the air they approached me, so out of choice I opened the door a little and winds began to blow. I realized that a really strong storm had come and it also helped spread the dust everywhere but I, because I wasn't wearing the suit, got wet from the splashes of water that the rain brought with it as I struggled to close back up. I quickly put on the helmet and the suit until the dust started to settle and the place became clear. I moved forward with the suit towards the hill to try to collect the things, but I noticed that the dust revealed something under the layer of dust - a gray sheet, which was probably dirty from the dust and ash that was on top of it.

"Something is hiding there" I said as I grabbed the edge of the sheet and threw it away.

The ash spread everywhere and already covered all the boxes and chests that were around the room as well as Ito's helmet. It wasn't the right decision on my part, but I moved my hand to try to shake off the dust that had stuck to my helmet and suit. Unfortunately, I don't have a suit cleaning tool and had to reach this level. A little shake and I was able to see what was in front of me:

"It's not a car?!" I was surprised and also a little excited

"Positive. This is a car" she confirmed as if I was a bit evil.

The car was painted black-gray, dirty with ash, with a hood in front and on it something that looked like a broken statue made of metal and behind it, a clean glass surface stood across it, with a round steering wheel and red seats that seemed comfortable to sit on. I think I counted five colonies plus a back section that looks like a storage compartment. Underneath it were beautiful white wheels. I came closer to see what I could see. It looks almost like new except for the dirt I spread everywhere, never used. With all the equipment around, I seem to have stumbled upon a museum or a one-room museum that has never been used, in the middle of an airport...

"What's an antique car in excellent condition doing here? Of all things?"

"I don't have residency. According to my scan, this car has no real damage and can be used"

"Wait? Does that mean it can be driven?"

"Positive. All the parts are in place and according to another scan, there is gasoline in the fuel tank capacity for refueling and driving it. I don't know how much it is needed and I can supply it"

"Does this mean that I have now come across a (non-standard) vehicle that I should just take and drive straight to my next destination?!"

I looked around the car and touched the seats and the steering wheel as well as the switches that were there, only something strange was sticking out by the steering wheel

"It's the ignition to start the engine. You need a key to insert and turn it"

"Really old technology, well then where is the key?"

I walked around the room and among the chests and boxes I looked for something that looked like a key, but I couldn't find anything but more ashes. I thought to myself that there might be another way, and I have an idea that I want to try. I moved back to the equipment by the door and took out the machine tool and put it on fill mode. I went back to the car and put the mechanical tool next to the cigarette lighter and turned the mode on. The tool began to take shape in a jagged and relatively long shape and signaled the confirmation that it had completed its function. So I put it in the lighter. I started turning it and the car started making screeching noises before I let go of the tool and it pulled back to its original direction.

"Try again" Rosalina told me and I turned the lighter again, suddenly the car turned on and in front of it a light began to show the way. She was shaking and it felt strange to me as I sat in the driver's seat. It was a particularly strange feeling, that I am used to all the spaceships and space shuttles I have traveled so far. Even bicycles don't behave like that. This is how such an old car would feel.

Below me were 3 plates and Rosalina explained to me what does what. I decided it wasn't a good idea to start a test drive inside this room, while there was a storm outside and the car had no roof. I turned the key back according to Rosalina's instructions and turned it off. Smoke spread all over the place from the engine. I was excited that I had a way to get to the destination faster. But Rosalina is not able to calculate the route following the change, and how long it will take, but I am 100% percent sure that it will take much less time than a month. While the storm was still raging I decided to take advantage of my time to clean the car in any way I could at least and that's how I passed the time until all the sounds of the rain stopped and I opened the door. The sky started to clear and I could see the sky starting to change color slowly to orange. The ground around me with the vegetation looks extremely wet. It doesn't look like it will rain anytime soon. It started to drip from my side and I decided to collect the water after Rosalina approved. After I finished all the preparations, I put all the equipment that was in the building, including mine in the back seat and started the car. Gently I pushed my foot on the gas pedal and it started to drive and I left the building. I moved the steering wheel and the pedals a little to understand how to use and navigate them, according to Rosalina's instructions.

Once I felt ready, as the sun began to set, I steered the ancient but all-too-well-functioning car onto my designated route, leaving behind the structure that had given me cover in this storm and with one question: what is a vintage car doing in the middle of an airport? This is probably a question I will never know.
