II - Hope

"Good morning Colin. You slept for..."

"I don't need the information" I just rubbed my eyes from the uncomfortable sleep and try to get up.

"Forgive me"

She answered quickly and remained quiet while I rummaged through the things around the storage room. Other than printable food, some salt batteries and empty storage cells, there wasn't anything interesting I needed. If they come looking for me. The situation is so complicated outside: how come they said there was a 'disaster of a new ice age that even all technological means could not stop' but outside, it looks like a clear day? If that's a lie, then why aren't there any search and rescue robots? Why are there no humans? Why does everything seem post-apocalypse? I've seen too much fantasy media.

I went around in circles and hoped for my luck in finding more things that could help me, but I soon gave up and left the storage room back to the carbon anesthesia machine. On the way, I looked in a hole at the end of the corridor looking outside. I slapped myself to check if I wasn't dreaming.

"You are not dreaming" Rosalina answered me.

"Rosalina, could you calculate my chances of survival if I stay in this building?"

"I think... your chance of surviving if by chance and no outside help with all the amount of food available to you in the entire building: the chance is drastically less every day that passes. The amount of food will be enough for you for a week if you don't find more"

"Then my chances are zero"

"Apparently"

I look out and peek my head. The view of the buildings - they all look worn and full of vegetation and forest breaking through every possible crevice. I can't find a single bird even flying. If I manage to scavenge outside for food, I might be able to extend my life a little longer.

"And I thought that surviving in space is difficult" I replied to the sky

I backed out of the hole and made my way back to the same room where I first woke up, and began to disassemble the machine to try to find useful parts. Fortunately, I was able to disassemble a device capable of transmitting signals.

"This is really my lucky day!" I try to connect the device to the salt battery I found earlier, but the device does not respond. I try to shake it but it doesn't change anything.

"I scanned the device. After analysis and holographic construction" suddenly the hologram radiation in front of me shows it the receiving device and slowly begins to disassemble it holographically until it shows something that looks like a card:

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"This part is damaged and cannot be replaced. The damage caused: volcanic glass"

"Glass? So this whole place was covered in ash with all the volcanic stuff! That explains the emergency door being closed. But why after it went in and not right away?"

"I don't have enough information," she replied. After a few seconds, while I placed the device on the floor, she answered again:

"Possibilities are given: one - find a new one. Two - replace a damaged part. Three - find an alternative way"

I wish I had studied engineering, if I had, I would have tried to fix or find a replacement with the anesthesia machine next to me, but no, I had to be a star explorer because that's cooler.

I kept poking around inside the device, trying to find something useful. Thinking about the options Rosalina suggested as I try to get the black box out of the cables. Suddenly an idea came to me from an old memory: an old structure of space communication not far from the metropolis where I am now. If there is no other place, no access to information or outside help: I think this is my best chance.

"Rosalina! I think we'll go for the most certain option I can do.."

"I understood" she answered immediately, I always forget that she can read my thoughts (and my memories along the way):

"Without access to a geographic map or the information that humanity stores: route, distance and exact direction are not accessible. But, with the help of memory analysis and your mental map, allows me to build a model of the space and point in a possible direction to your goal. It will take a few minutes"

At the same time, I'm looking for more parts, but I couldn't find any more useful parts, especially for the cables. That's why I turned to the storage compartment of the carbon anesthesia device and opened it. Inside it was hidden a plasma rifle with several cartridges, something resembling a bag and more bags of printing food and water. Why didn't I look at this before?

I rummaged through the things and took everything out of there, then with the help of the plasma knife, took out the storage cell and took out the energy cell of the device. I organized all the things before Rosalina got back to me:

"Approximate holographic map of the location and target route calculated successfully!"

Suddenly the created hologram was projected and with it spread over the whole room. The map is full of what looks like buildings, and right at the far end, there is a mountain range. The map suddenly started to mark me 2 points and the route. I watched in thought, but the more the track built, the paler my face became.

"A route was successfully built! Walking distance to the destination - a month, a week, 2 days..."

"This is the closest?! The old space communications structure! Is there a possible alternative option?!" I try to keep my sanity from the distance I have to go. Or I'll try to hijack a spaceship or a simple teleportation machine.

"The second closest option was the airport, 3 days of walk"

"Then why not use my stupid idea instead? I just thought of it"

"Changing walking route... Done"

The hologram shows the new route. It's a bit similar to the previous track, but it stops at a short distance compared to it. And the goal? A spaceport or a large airport or I don't know what is shown on the map. The hope in me rises when I see this compared to the previous map - I have enough food until I get there and there is always contact at the airports or spaceports if I manage to catch one, I will be able to try to contact if anyone and I will know where they all escaped if not to Luna or one of the foreign bases - Earthly!

"It's excellent! I think that's the goal - to reach, connect, get communication and pray that they will come"

"No problems" she immediately came while I put everything in the bag, especially the plasma rifle that I attached to my back and scans around before I left the room.

If I manage to contact my parents, I want to give them a word or two about the fact that I was abandoned here instead.
