Chapter 9: The Dark Shadows

We have been sleeping for a long while. Candy and I just saw the bright yellow sun turning into a dark purple crystal. I wonder if that’s how nighttime comes here in this Realm. I wonder if the dark purple crystal will change back into the sun.

Candy is sound asleep. I wake up and watch the big creatures. I think about the big hummingbirds and the big caterpillars that Candy and I just saw before. Why they are big and why is there no sign of any Rabacas? I know I have been here before. I remember the colorful trees, and the colorful mountains, but there are still no Rabaca’s to be seen. Maybe we are not close to a village or something. I mean the Rabaca’s got to live somewhere to sleep, play, eat, and live. I know they do. But where can they be? I have to find them soon.

I stay awake until the enormous dark purple crystal changes back into the sun. Bright yellow sunbeams are growing all over the valley. It is so beautiful. The dark purple crystal slowly changes into a yellow sun.

I stand up. I smile and stare at the sun shining down. I look down and notice that Candy is still asleep. Colorful flowers are blooming like open hands. They stretch on for miles on the field. I gasp and shake Candy to wake her up.

“Candy, wake up. You got to see this,” I say.

Candy wakes up, yawns, and rubs her eyes. She watches the flowers and plants growing fast all around us. Candy looks up at me.

“Are you doing this?” asks Candy.

“I don’t think so. I think this is what plants do every mornin’ in this Realm,” I say.

We are still watching the plants growing everywhere. There are flowers, vines, leaves, and small trees. Candy and I chuckle as we are enjoying the growing plants. The plants stop growing and they just made a flower meadow in the valley. I am amazed that these plants just grew faster than any normal plant I’ve seen in the Human Realm. But the Human Realm doesn’t have any plants or grass yet, just deep snow. This is why I need to find the Easter Bunny and convince him to do his job. So that spring will come to the Human Realm once again.

“Dose this Golden Egg even work?” I ask myself.

Candy scrunches her shoulders. I take out the Golden Egg and say something to it.

“I’m probably talkin' to an egg now.” I bring my mouth closer to the Golden Egg. “Listen if you can hear me, I need to get home, my real home, my home in this Realm. Please show us the way to my fathah’ or mothah’. We don’t know which way to go. We need to find this Eastah’ Bunny,” I say to the Golden Egg.

The golden does not do anything. It just stands on my paw. I sigh, thinking it doesn’t work anymore. I drop the Golden Egg on the grass and kneel, feeling depressed.

Candy walks to me and gently pats my back. I look up at Candy and she smiles at me. I smile back.

“It’s just that…” I pause. “I just wanted to find out who I am and where I come from. But there are no othah’ Rabaca’s here in this Realm. I have a feelin’ that this Realm has no more Rabaca’s. What if I’m the last one?” I ask.

“Jake,” says Candy. “You never gave up on finding this Realm. Thanks to Linda’s story you’ve found your real home. I just came along to keep you company and I wanted to see this beautiful Realm of yours. And you were right. You are different, thanks to your true Rabaca. I don’t think that you might be the only one. You had found that Golden Egg and found this Realm and never gave up. I’m sure there are other Rabaca’s. We’ve just entered this Realm. They must be around here somewhere,” says Candy.

Then the Golden Egg starts to glow. It levitates about seven inches in the air again. The golden light beam shoots out of the Golden Egg. It points south at some dark purple mountains. There are hundreds of mountains. I walk to the Golden Egg and it slowly hovers as I move my paw under it. I hold onto Candy’s hand and she shakes.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Those mountains…” Candy points. “…they don’t look so very beautiful like everything else,” says Candy.

“Well, the Golden Egg is pointin’ that way to the mountains. Don’t worry, I’ll look aftah’ you,” I say.

Candy looks up at me and nods. We walk to the Golden Egg and it hovers towards the dark purple mountains as we are walking closer to them. We walk to the entrance of the dark purple mountains and it begins to get dark. But the Golden Egg is still shining and lighting our way. Candy holds onto my paw tighter.

“Ow! Not so tight!” I snap.

Candy nods and does not squeeze my paw too tight.

We both walk between two large mountains. The bottom feels very cold. It is not warm like the other lands in this Realm. My spine shivers and my heart pounds very fast. My thoughts are telling me to turn around and that something dark and scary might be here. But the Golden Egg is still hovering between the purple mountains. I don’t have a map. If I did, then I will know how far these dark purple mountains are. We continue following the Golden Egg. We have been walking for a while. It is still a little dark. The bottom of the mountains is black, but the top is shining with sun rays.

“Candy, get on my back,” I say.

I kneel and Candy gets on my back. I hold onto her legs and she holds onto my long Rabaca ears. I leap very high as the wind blows on our faces. I make it to the top of the mountain. The warm sun ray shines all over the top. The gentle warm wind blows. I look around. I can see many trees and more mountains. But there is still no sign of any Rabacas. I look to the south and see a tiny castle. Or I think it is a castle. It is too far away to know for sure.

I point at the castle. “See that tiny castle ovah’ there?” I ask.

Candy squint’s her eyes and stares at the castle.

“Looks more like a giant egg.” She says.

“Well, that is where the Golden Egg is pointin’ at. We’ve got to go there,” I say.

I was about to leap as far as I can toward the destination of the castle, but then something catches my eye. There is a black rabbit-like creature running at the bottom of the mountains. I smile and chuckle. It disappears into the shadows.

“Candy, I think I saw a Rabaca,” I say.

Candy gasps and smiles. I leap from the top of the mountain and land on the ground. Candy is with me. I do not see any Rabaca’s. I look around and there is none in sight.

“Maybe it was nothin’. Just the shadows palyin’ tricks on me,” I say.

Candy looks around and spots the same black rabbit creature behind a rock. She walks towards it. I am too upset to notice Candy walking away from me. I turn around and notice that Candy is not in sight.

“Candy, Candy where are you?!” I shout.

I hear her scream.

My rabbit ears rise. “Candy!” I shout.

I run in the direction of Candy’s screaming. I leap over rocks and stones. I trip and fall on my back. I get back up and wiggle my ears as I try to listen to Candy. I hear Candy’s screaming only this time it sounds very close.

“Candy, where are you?!” I shout.

I hear her screaming again. The screaming is behind a large dark purple rock. I jump onto the rock and stand on top of it.

Candy is surrounded by some dark creepy shadow rabbits. They are black as night and have pokey-like sharp cat claws. They only have yellow eyes and they look mean and creepy. They stare at Candy and are creeping up on her. There are at least twenty of them. Fear knots are slowly twisting in my stomach, but I need to protect my little sister. I take a deep breath and pant angrily.

“Hey, you blokes!” I shout at the shadow rabbits. “Rack off the lot of you! Leave my little sistah’ alone!” I shout.

The shadow rabbits turn to me. They are creepy and hissing at me. Their shadow paws slowly change into poky sharp cat claws. My anger changes into fear. My eyes widen and my heart pounds. My legs are shaking. I am panting in fear, and feel terrified. I look into their yellow sinister glowing eyes and I feel too afraid to run.

“Why do you all look familiah’ to me?” I ask.

I gasp and remember. “One of you guys almost killed me when I was a baby Rabaca,” I say.

Candy runs away from the shadow rabbits. I still cannot move. I am too scared. I remember the time when one of the shadow rabbits almost killed me when I was a baby Rabaca.

Candy throws a rock at my head. “Run!” she shouts.

I pant and watch the shadow rabbits running toward me. I jump off of the rock, pick up Candy, and begin to run away. I run as fast as I can and away from the shadow rabbits. But they are too fast for me. Candy and I hide behind a rock in the shadows. Candy sighs with relief. Then one of the shadow rabbits slowly emerges from the shadows right by me.

“Oh, Crikey!” I shout.

Candy screams with fear and we run away from the shadows.

“Crikey, these things travel by shadow!” I shout.

“How do we avoid them?!” shouts Candy.

I look up at the top of the mountains and see the sunlight.

I point at the top of the mountain. “We need to get up there!” I shout.

I look back. The shadow rabbits are getting closer to us. “We can’t outrun them!” I shout.

I pick up Candy and leap high. We make it to the top of the mountain. The sun shines on us. I look down from the top and notice the shadow rabbits are avoiding the sunlight. Candy and I sigh and laugh. We are safe now.

“Well, that was bloody close.” I chuckle.

Candy nods. One of the shadow rabbits grabs my leg. Its black paw begins to burn in the sunlight. Smoke is steaming out of the shadow rabbit's arm.

It screeches in pain as its arm is burning. I struggle and pull. But it is no use. The shadow paw’s grip feels very strong. It pulls me down from the mountain.

Candy is still on top of the mountain. “Jake!” she shouts.

I scream and slide down the mountain. I land on my back and hit my head. My head hurts a lot. It feels like a terrible headache. I shake my head and jump onto my feet. Candy is about to climb down the mountain, but I do not want her to. She is safe in the sunlight.

“Stay up in the light!” I shout.

Candy does not move. She stays still in the sunlight. I am surrounded by shadow rabbits. I look around to find the Golden Egg, but it is nowhere in sight.

“Oh, Crikey! I lost the Golden Egg!” I shout.

One of the shadow rabbits punches my face. Then another one punches my stomach. I grunt in pain and bend my back. The shadow rabbits grab my arms, my legs, and my long rabbit ears. They hold me flat on the ground. I struggle to get them off of me, but they are too strong. One of the shadow rabbits crawls onto me like a cat stalking a mouse. I pant with fear and widen my eyes. The shadow rabbit presses its sharp shadow claw onto my heart. I pant some more.

“You all tried to kill me when I was a baby rabbit, why?” I grunt.

The shadow rabbit does not answer. The claw presses harder onto my heart. I grunt in pain as I feel the sharp claw pressing. I shut my eyes tightly. I wait for something to happen or for someone to rescue me, I hope.

A bright yellow light shines above me. The shadow rabbits screech in pain and they quickly crawl away from the light. The shadow rabbit that was trying to stab my heart is still on top of me. The bright yellow light shines even brighter and is coming closer to the shadow rabbit. The shadow rabbit gives up, moves its claw off my chest, and screeches away. I pant with relief and cover my chest with my paws. My chest hurts a little.

The bright yellow light slowly dims. I look up and someone is staring down at me. It is a tall pink Rabaca. She has female eyelashes. So my guess is she is a female Rabaca.

“Who are you?” asks the female pink Rabaca.

I smile at her. “My name is Jake Grant. I came from the Human Realm,” I answer.
