Chapter 18: Shadow and Light

Clover, Flow, and I leap onto the mountains and try to find the way out of Chivem Land. But it is hard to see because of the terrible snowstorm that is blowing the icy cold snow in Chivem Land. I can barely feel my feet, my ears, and my paws. Clover and Flow are freezing as well. We stop leaping and take a rest on top of one of the mountains in Chivem Land. Flow, Clover, and I pant for breath.

I hold onto my Golden Egg staff. I close my eyes and try to think of the way back to Keaple Lake. The Golden Egg shines its golden light and reveals the map above us. It is the same map that I saw in my bedroom back in Minnesota. The map shows the entire Rabbit Realm. I think of where I want to go and that is Keaple Lake. The Golden Egg levitates off of the staff and towards the golden map. The Golden Egg stops in front of the location of Keaple Lake.

I point at the map. “We need to head east,” I say.

Clover looks around and sees nothing but snowstorms that are surrounding us.

“But how can we tell which ways east?” asks Clover.

I point at the Golden Egg. The Golden Egg hovers back to me. The golden light map disappears back into the egg. The Golden Egg sticks back onto my staff.

“East,” I say.

The compass inside the Golden Egg shines on the letter E. I look to where east is. The Golden Egg is shining towards two mountains. I lower my staff and point at the two mountains.

“That way,” I say.

Clover and Flow turn to the two mountains.

“How do you know?” asks Clover.

“This Golden Egg showed me,” I answer.

I turn to Clover and Flow. They are smiling at me.

“What?” I ask.

“You are your father’s son,” says Clover.

I blush and clear my throat.

“Okay, let’s get goin’,” I say.

Clover, Flow, and I leap off the mountain. We land between the two mountains that I was pointing at. We all run between the mountains. The snow is still blowing in front of us. We cover our eyes to block the snow. I point my Golden Egg staff in front of us. Golden light shines and melts the snow as we are walking. It’s like a golden shield that is protecting us from the snowstorm.

We make it out of Chivem Land. There is still a snowstorm over Chivem Land. Clover, Flow, and I run to Carrot Meadow. As we are running, the carrots are popping out of the ground one by one. Clover stops in the middle of Carrot Meadow and stares at the Carrots. She turns to me. Flow and I stop running and turn to Clover.

“What is it?” I ask.

Clover points at the carrots.

“You made these carrots pop out without using a green crystal?” she asks me.

I rub the back of my head. “Yes. Well, I sorta asked the carrots if they can come out of the ground so I can eat most of them to gain strength. I was very hungry before I arrived at Chivem Land to find the dark purple crystal,” I answer.

Clover claps her paws and quietly chuckles.

“You are going to be the next Easter Bunny in no time,” she says.

I blush. “It was nothin’, I was just very hungry,” I say.

“Not one Rabaca can summon plants by will. Only the son of the Easter Bunny or the Easter Bunny can do it. So I don’t call that nothing,” says Clover.

I nod and look back at the snowstorm over Chivem Land. It is spreading over Carrot Meadow.

“We bettah’ get movin’,” I say.

Clover, Flow, and I run to the east and out of Carrot Meadow.

We run to Keaple Lake. The storm seems to be spreading all over the Realm. I do not look back at the storm. I am only looking forward to Keaple Lake. I watch Candy running towards me along with my Rabaca mom and dad. Clover, Flow, and I make it to Keaple Lake. We are completely out of breath. Candy runs and hugs me.

“You’re back, you’re back!” she laughs.

Candy releases her hug and I put her down. I walk to my Rabaca mom and wink at her.

“You found it?” she whispers.

I nod. “By the way, I nevah’ asked your real name, mom,” I say.

My Rabaca mom clears her throat. “My name is Silver,” she says.

My dad walks up to me and shakes my paw.

“And my real name is Edd,” he says.

I scoff and chuckle once. “Dronko told your name, Edd. I thought your name was the Eastah’ Bunny?” I ask.

“That’s my title name. It’s what children have been calling our families for many generations,” answers Edd, my dad.

“Sorry I laughed at your name, dad,” I say.

“That’s okay. I still think it’s a funny name as well. You don’t get to choose your name, parents choose,” says Edd.

I let out a weak chuckle. “No, I guess not,” I say.

Silver and Edd turn to Flow. Silver begins to cry softly. Edd is chuckling. I walk to Flow and point at her.

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

“Silvah’, Edd, this is Flow, your long lost adopted Rabaca daughtah’,” I say.

Edd, Silver, and Flow join a group hug. I am happy for Flow. Candy tugs onto my jacket. I look down at her.

“Is she adopted like us?” she asks.

“Of course she is. Edd and Silvah’ adopted her,” I answer.

Candy giggles with joy. “Is she my big sister now?” she asks.

I turn to Flow.

“I suppose she is. She is your adopted big sistah’ of course,” I say.

Edd, Sliver, and Flow break up the hug. Edd turns to me.

“They’re waiting for you,” he says.

“The kings and Queens are waitin’ for me?” I ask.

“Yes, they are. I hope you have a good explanation of why you ran off without letting us know,” says Edd.

“I do. I think I found a way to bring back our long lost Rabaca’s,” I say.

All the seven Rabaca Kings and Queens walk up to me. The Kings look very upset at me, but the Queens do not, they look worried.

“You left without telling us where you were going?” asks King Famernt the light grey chubby Rabaca.

The Queen of Famernt calms her husband. “He had his reasons,” she says.

“And what reason was it?” asks King Chuaa the light blue Rabaca.

I begin to explain. “You see that snowstorm?” I point at it.

The seven Kings and Queens stare at the snowstorm. I continue to explain.

“That snowstorm is the first to come into this Realm. Unless we stop it somehow,” I say.

“How?” asks Candy.

“By lettin’ me become the next Eastah’ Bunny,” I answer.

Deegra, the muscular light orange Rabaca groans and rubs his head. “We all know that. You need to become the next Easter Bunny to bring spring back to our Realms,” he says.

“Yes, but the question is how?” asks Queen Deegra the light orange female Rabaca.

I lift the Golden Egg staff.

The light turquoise Rabaca, King Eobni, shakes his head.

“We all know that the Golden Egg scares away the Shadow Rabbits,” he says.

“Yes it can, but all of the Shadow Rabbits are the long-lost rabbit children,” I say.

The seven Kings and Queens are chatting while panicking.

“How can you possibly know that the Shadow Rabbits are the long-lost Rabbits?” asks King Ceaity the blue Rabaca.

I walk to Flow to introduce her. “This is my long-lost adopted sistah’,” I say.

“My name is Flow. I used to be a Shadow Rabbit. Until Jake saved me and change me back into my normal self. He used the Golden Egg to bring me back to light. Dronko had kidnapped your little ones to make them angry and jealous and to turn them into Shadow Rabbits. He used a piece of the huge shadow crystal. Dronko had found a way to use that piece of the dark purple crystal to make Shadow Rabbits. He missed used the power of shadow on your children and me,” says Flow.

“So, how do we change the Shadow Rabbits back into our children?” asks King Ochinm the muscular yellow Rabaca.

“We haven’t found the piece of the dark purple crystal. It’s long lost,” I lie but they don’t know.

I wink at my mom, Silver. Deegra is looking kind of suspicious.

“Then how else do we bring back our children without the missing piece?” he asks me.

“With my Golden Egg. If I can connect my Golden Egg to the sun crystal, then it can shine its golden light all over the Rabbit Realm. And that golden light will rid all of the Shadow Rabbits and bring our children back to light. The sun crystal scares away the Shadow Rabbits, but my Golden Egg can save them,” I say.

Deegra walks up to me and stares down. “How do you know that will work?” he asks.

I gulp. “I don’t, but we have to give it a try,” I say.

“And if it does work and our children are back to normal. Who’s to say that Dronko will not try to take over our little ones again and use the missing piece of the dark purple crystal to take over our sun crystal for good?” asks Deegra.

“What are you sayin’?” I ask.

Deegra stares into my eyes and gently nods.

“You know what I am saying,” he says.

Now I know what Deegra meant and I do not like it. I hit Deegra in the chest.

“I aint goanna kill my uncle,” I whisper.

“You know that he too has been corrupted by the dark purple crystal. He won’t be able to come to light anymore. It’s too late for him.” Deegra whispers back.

“I aint goanna kill my uncle,” I repeat.

“Why not, after all, he’s done?” asks Deegra.

“Because if I do, then I am more than the enemy he is,” I answer.

“Sometime to become the next Easter Bunny, you must make sacrifices,” says Deegra.

I decide to change the subject. I turn to the seven Kings and Queens.

“My Golden Egg will bring your children back. It worked on Flow and once when we find the missin’ piece of the purple shadow crystal, we will restore it to the huge crystal. And aftah’ all that, my dad will show me how to get rid of wintah’ for now and bring back the hope of spring again,” I say.

The seven Kings and Queens agree to do my plan and they all nod.

Deegra how ever does not agree. “What if this plan fails? Are you willing to risk our Realm to some Rabaca who used to be a human his whole life?” he asks everyone.

The Kings and Queens gasp with shock. I have no idea how Deegra knew I was human. Must have been the way that I talked and the way I dressed.

“Okay, it’s true.” I bump into Deegra and walk past him. “I used to live in the Human Realm with the humans. I was raised by humans. Then on my eighteenth birthday, I found my true home and my true self. Being human wasn’t all that bad. I mean I kind’ a loved it, but I love my Rabaca form bettah’,” I say.

Candy gasps with wide eyes.

“You mean you don’t want to be Jake Grant anymore?” she asks me.

I was about to answer her when Deegra interrupts me. “You see! He isn’t our kind. He used to be human and forgotten our Realm and our way of life!” he shouts.

I walk up to Deegra and hit his back. Deegra turns around and growls at me.

I stare back at him. “Killin’ one of our own is not the way of anyone’s life!” I shout.

Edd gasps and butts in between Deegra and me.

“You think killing my big brother will solve everything?” asks Edd to Deegra.

Deegra hesitates to answer. The seven Kings and Queens are in shock as well. They all shake their heads, they are ashamed of Deegra. Deegra folds his arms and grunts loudly. My dad, Edd tries to calm him.

“Killing is not our way of life. After we free the children, my older brother will stand trial,” he says.

All the Kings and Queens nod.

“We will commit Dronko to his crimes and find him guilty,” says king Ceaity.

“Guilty,” says King Eobni.

“Yes, guilty,” says King Chuaa.

“Guilty,” says King Ochinm.

“And guilty,” says King Famernt.

The seven Queens nod and also agree with their Kings. We all wait for Deegra to say the word guilty. Deegra grunts with a bad temper and stomps away. Clover is worried for Deegra and so am I. The seven Kings and Queens are chatting. Candy is talking to Flow so she can get to know her. Clover is talking to Edd. Fluffy the red small Rabaca is talking to Candy and Flow.

I tap onto Silver’s left shoulder. “Mom, can I talk to you alone?” I whisper.

Silver nods. We walk away from the crowd and into Keaple Forest. We are not far from the crowd.

“What is it son?” asks Silver.

I sigh and rub my head. “I have a feelin’ that the othah’ Kings and Queens might agree with Deegra,” I answer.

“They agree to kill Dronko?” asks Silver.

“Don’t tell me that you agree with Deegra?” I ask.

“I don’t. If there is one thing that I know, you never give up on family,” answers Sliver.

I sigh with relief. “I found it,” I say.

“Found what?” asks Silver.

I take out the piece of the dark purple crystal from my satchel. My mom, Silver gasps and covers it with her paws.

“Don’t let them see it. If they do, then I will stand trial as well as Dronko,” she says.

I put the dark purple crystal back in my backpack.

“I don’t want them to know about the missin’ piece yet. Not until I put it back onto the yellow sun crystal and get rid of all of the Shadow Rabbits once and for all,” I say.

Silver nods. “You seem very nervous about this plan, Jake,” she says.

“I am. But I’ve got to try somethin’. I won’t stop tryin’ until I spring back to both Realms. I made a promise to my human parents. I left a message sayin’ that when I return home, spring will be back. And I intend to keep my promise, mom,” I say.

Silver places her paw on my face.

“They raised you well, better than us.” She sniffs. She looks like she is about to cry.

“Oh no, don’t say that, mom. I mean you guys can continue to raise me as well, and teach me everythin’ about becomin’ the next Eastah’ Bunny and to be a real Rabaca,” I say.

Silver nods and moves her paw off of my face.

“Dronko will stop at nothin’ to become the next Eastah’ Bunny,” I say.

“I know son,” says Silver.

She smiles and nods. We walk out of Keaple Forest and back to Keaple Lake.
