Chapter 9

Poppit POV

-A task. The voice has given me a task! Curator wishes me to do things for him! The new friend Babe also has a thing to do from a thing we need to do! We should do that first, then, the thing they don't need us to do for them to do stuff!-

Heading over to the grass tufts first with an almost shockingly excited gait, only the front half would be moving. Their long form allowing them to still keep their hind quarters seated near snake-tus as the get their fore quarters to the grasses. Using their upper mandibles as a hard surface against the spine of a blade, they'd snap it over to cleanly break the blade with a mix of paws and in a way, jaws. Once that spine is broken, a quick movement of their claws to cut through the more flexible material to sever the remaining connection and the first blade is gained.

As soon as they'd get the first blade, however, it would vanish, much to their confusion. A soft chuckle would resound in their mind as Curator feels their surprise.

'I can move it where it needs to go buddy, it's just much easier to move only instead of pluck myself then move.'

-This makes sense to us! Less work for one, when others do some work too! Like digging brooding nest, goes faster if all work on it, not just us! Voice is smart, and made us smart too! Still, will not let them down on our first task though!-

Curator POV

-Well, they sure are...uh...lets go with enthusiastic to do things. Still weird to see them sitting in one spot and working a couple feet away too. Heh, if this were retail I bet some Karen would be throwing a fit about how dare they be seated while working.-

Pulling that blade of grass into my inventory and then dropping it out in a slight curl within the lil shelter I made earlier for Babe to get to work on. A good start really, with these tasks we can figure out where true north is, and also, set up a basic clock. Both those things are very, very, useful, but man to really get started we need some hands. Or maybe with the inventory...and now with Poppit, we could make a better shelter, an actual building.

-If memory serves, we have almost everything needed to make adobe here, the big thing we're lacking is fibrous material. With how much we've plucked from the grasses by this point, I'm....reluctant to pluck more for fear of killing then which will make the ground less stable and could strangle this budding oasis, causing it to fill in with sand. If we go with something more rounded and dome like, we could at least do away with the need for wood by letting the weight distribute in a safe manner. Once that's done, could excavate and replace with more adobe, working down to bedrock or the like, ensure stability of the structure, and give a large cooler chamber all at the same time. Yeah, that's a plan!-

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

With a game plan to work with started, and both my companions set to task. Making good headway on those tasks too I'd say. It's time to take stock of the full situation, and not just the immediate basics like I've been doing and not being more distracted than a kid in a candy shop with carte blanche. So, died, got judge, and found worthy for some reason to have a new sense of life as a reality bending gem that can grant, sapience....sentience...both too creatures. Not sure on the exact phrasing but it's kinda like the spell Awaken from D&D so lets think of it like that. Next, there's the energy that's constantly being drawn in from the environment, that's used to do that, which also gets little boosts when Babe blindly snacks on things, it probably will do the same for Poppit but we need more data on that to be sure. Teaching, truly teaching, and sharing knowledge seems to also grant a reasonable influx of energy, although that was more a life lesson than something as rote as the times tables. The Iron Giant would be proud of that one too. Then there's the kinda pocket space, reminds me of a video game inventory also, where only I have access to the contents, so, useful in some ways but, problematic in others too.

Okay. Basic stock taken. Now to scream into the void to get it all out. Turning my view skyward, away from both my friends and the new home, just that would be done. Screaming, cursing, generally freaking out, while directing that feeling away so as to, hopefully, not affect my two weird friends.

After getting that out of my system, the manic laughter would start. Letting myself calm down and just mentally breath to help center myself. Before looking back over my domain, a steely resolve would set in.

-I'll keep my friends properly safe this time, and we'll make our own paradise out here. If others show up to join, they'll be vetted better. No chance of betrayal this time. Never, again.-

Finally calm and with a direction, of sorts, it's time to make a quick analysis of the new things I've learned already in my time here.

-Now then, instead of just calling it energy, since it's used too more or less cast spells without silly things like spell slots, we'll call it mana. Awakening creatures seems to have a variable cost dependent on the baseline, Babe was much less taxing than Poppit after all. Could be size is a factor there also, will need to test further in the future. The rings that form on myself at times seem to be an indicator of a set volume of mana, so more rings is better as we don't wanna risk a deficit. Next time creature I should should be a test if living things can be pulled into my pocket, as if that is the case, it may allow me to rescue Poppit in an emergency when he starts going out to gather info for me.-

????? POV

"Chieftain, we need to be careful. We should send scouts out to look around to the east."

"Why is that shaman?"

Instead of responding, a simple beaconing gesture for the chief to follow, I would lead him to my tent, showing him the Mana Pot, and pointing to the small gems on the eastern side of it. An old device we use as an early warning system for things like elementals, or other highly magical beings, it's clear to see all the gems on that side have been been over filled to the point of cracking and breaking. The normally color changing crystals a deep black spider webbed by the white lines of those cracks.

"Oh."

"Oh, indeed, my chieftain"
