Chapter 28

Vekla POV

Pure and utter pandemonium. After the panic of a veritable tide of sandtrap ferrets flowing down Curator's abode to move toward the camp, things have...somewhat calmed down. The chaos of so many Poppits around is still quite notable, but...now that people aren't screaming and freaking out it's at least bearable. It was quite a surprise all the same, but, the smallest Poppits seem to have kind of 'paired up' with folks, staying close or riding on them, where as the moderately sized ones have spread out and are seemingly patrolling Curator's domain, and even a bit outside the borders. Honestly though, he really should have given us a little heads up about this, the poor chieftain passed out...again.

Chuckling softly as the still out of it chieftain rests on his sleeping mat with a tiny Poppit laying with him, it's almost endearing to see. Turning to head out, it'd only take a few steps to be outside once more in the crisp, evening air. Looking around, a sense of accomplishment fills me as my kin enjoy clean water, and food, more than we've had before, even the young ones are running around and playing with their new, surprisingly gentle and sociable, predatory companions.

"If one had asked me even a few days ago if such a sight would be possible, I likely would have said they were mad."

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Speaking to no one in particular, a quick shake of my head and a soft chuckle, it would be time to head to my own tent. That thing set up closest to the edge of this little camping area it'd be only a few steps inside with that flap closing before a voice would speak up.

"Perhaps you would have thought such, but, is that which your past self would view as madness a bad thing now that you have seen and experienced it yourself?"

"No Grand Archivist Babe, more this is so...unbelievable a change that even I'm a bit shocked by it still. For years every night we could have been attacked as we slept, there was almost never enough food, and...you can ask Curator what we had for water. This is...honestly like we have suddenly fallen into a paradise. Safety, food enough to not go hungry as long as we are careful, and water that is clean, fresh, and cool. Honestly, a cynical part of me thinks I will wake up and find this is all a dream. The treks from the past few days, and the changes I've gone through let me know it's not, but it's...been quite alot, and quite quickly."

"That is quite understandable. Perhaps you, and the others, should take a few days to fully settle in. Both to get your camp fully established and to show them how to do things with those plants, and how to safely bathe and not contaminate the oasis. As well as to let the shock of all these changes wear off as well and grow accustomed to everyone's new companion."

'That is actually a good idea. Plus, that'll let me get used to how Poppit is now. It's kinda weird, as they're all like...a single shared mind, but trying to view through them, it's like looking at a wall of camera feeds all at once'
