Chapter Thirty Nine: Arkanon’s New Job
Arkanon walked Bentley by the leash, he ditched his normal armour, instead, he wore brown pants, black boots, and a black wool shirt. He was just wandering the town of Buttermilk, helping to rebuild. With Jason’s nails, and new tools, the townspeople had begun to demolish the rubble and rebuild. The houses were built quickly from logs. Buttermilk soon became filled with humble cabins.
Arkanon and Bentley wandered over to the village. People were walking around the town normally. Some stepped casually over huge bricks in the road. Ark and the horse arrived at a stable. Bentley was attached to the front of a cart. There were four other horses on the same cart. It was a long cart, with many wheels, for carrying logs into the city. Bentley was the lead horse. He was strong and he followed directions incredibly well.
Arkanon led the cart in a walking pace through the village. Townspeople stopped and moved out of the way as Arkanon walked next to Bentley. They wandered a short distance until they came upon a forest, recently culled. The forest had become barren. Only the berry bushes remained. The young saplings had been harvested to make pitchforks and shovels. The larger trees had been turned into cabins.
The skeleton king walked up to the group of lumberjacks. They had been working all morning. It was still early. Many large trees had been cut into neat logs. The branches were laying in piles. Cows munched on the leaves in the piles, haphazardly scattering branches across the landscape.

The lumberjacks began to lift one of the logs together. They put it onto the massive cart with ease and then they began to lift the second log.
A short while later. Arkanon began to walk the full load back to the village. It was a short walk, but it was a heavy load.
The horses were happy to be given such a slow walking master. Arkanon was grateful to be given the most relaxing duty. He liked hanging out with Bentley. He was a smart horse.
The carriage arrived into town, and the men at the church began unloading the wood. The church had become the town workshop. They smelted tools and they carved the logs into planks here. Arkanon turned the carriage around by wandering the long way out of town, the carriage was too big to turn normally. The skeleton man walked the horses back to the forest, picked up some more logs, and then walked back into town. The workers unloaded the wood and added it to the processing pile.
Arkanon watched as a woman supplied five buckets of water. One for each horse. Some of the horses drank. Bentley drank some water and Arkanon patted his neck.
The town square had been rebuilt and breakfast had started. People flocked to the stalls to buy breakfast. Prices had been reduced severely for basic foods, to help in the trying time, but other foods, like coffee, and imported grains, were much more expensive.
Arkanon wanted to eat something so badly, but he knew he could never taste the food. He decided to try a banana. He picked one up from the free fruit pile and peeled it. He took one bite and sighed. No flavour, but it was nice. He took another bite and then walked over to Bentley. He held it out for Bentley to eat. They walked out of the town.
