Chapter (22) Glimpse of the void

It started small, but one by one, his undead started disappearing he didn’t notice because he was replacing them faster than how they were disappearing.

His army had covered the entire world before he started noticing something was amiss.

Large swathes of his undead would spontaneously burst into black flames and sink into the ground.

Laubres panicked and recalled his remaining undead to his undead vault, here, he thoroughly studied his undead and discovered they were infected with a soul virus.

Normal undead didn’t have souls, but because his undead wasn’t normal, they didn’t die, Laubres just transformed humans or beasts.

Because of this, they still retained their souls and intelligence which made them much more dangerous, some tried to warn him through his mental link but because it was so few at the time, he ignored it.

Understanding the virus was beyond him, it spread so quickly that he had to dispose of many undead to get rid of it.

This weakened him considerably, the virus had taken more than half of his forces.

When he returned to the real world, a literal army of gods was waiting for him, he had to chance to regain his bearings before they bombarded him with a plethora of attacks.

His hands shot up in the air as he instinctively used an aspect of his power to erect a towering wall of darkness, completely blocking the incoming attacks easily.

A fight of epic proportions ensued shortly after breaking the already dead world apart, huge parts of landmasses floated in space, and millions of dead gods scattered all over.

Undead littered space, and broken heads and bones floated all over.

Space itself cracked and glitched all over, reality was breaking down and collapsing on itself, a skeletal figure stood at the center of all the chaos, unfazed and unharmed, and purple flames surrounded Laubres’s figure, flickering and dancing happily in the void of space.

Above Laubres were two dying gods attacking Laubres relentlessly, Laubres ignored them and continued to look at his now dead army of undead.

The burning fire in his eye sockets flickered with emotions of sadness and grief, he remembered the days when he and his undead generals would laugh at mortals, he remembered the days when he was a mortal himself.

It was all gone now, the gods had taken it all from him. If only they left him alone; they had millions of worlds to oversee and he only took one the greedy bastards wanted everything.

He finally turned his head to look above him.

The two gods still attacked futilely, their attacks harmlessly brushed off his body, he waved his hand and purple flames materialized above the fleeing gods.

It morphed into a hand and easily grabbed them, pulling them back to Laubres, they kicked and squirmed pitifully but it was useless.

“Why? Why kill all my children? Why! Why go through so much trouble to kill me? Because I was growing too fast? Was your pride so important!? Because I ignored you!?.” Laubres asked these questions full of anger, the power in his voice bent the already broken reality.

The Gods in question didn’t answer, they knew it was all too late now, the situation was beyond salvageable.

“Not going to answer? Then so be it.” Laubres said, he waved his hand once more and reality broke apart, all layers of reality broke with each wave, the final layer broke and the void flooded through.

Byron tore his attention off the snake’s projection, it broke apart shortly after, he slumped to the ground clutching his head.

He felt like if he had looked at it any longer, he would’ve gone mad, Byron felt his strength leaving him rapidly, and his soul cracked in multiple places.

He felt sensations he didn’t know existed; he tasted his thoughts, felt colors crawl on his skin, his eyes turned entirely black and he spasmed crazily.

SYSTEM ERROR:

##################

Byron could hardly see the system message, he was dying and he knew it, just one glance at the void had been enough to kill him.

He didn’t regret hearing Laubres’s story, he learned the truth of the world, he was only sorry he didn’t know sooner, the five gods weren’t the supreme beings they portrayed themselves to be.

He laughed, coughing up some blood in the process, the five gods were remnants of divine power left by the dead gods.

Byron broke into a fit of laughter, spilling blood all over himself.

He found it funny, the gods who he thought were the panicle of power were mare remnants of what used to be, the arrogant bastards who kept humanity in check and barely fought off the void were remnants.

He felt his soul slipping, a vortex opened up inside his mind-space and was pulling on it, he fought it weakly but it was useless.

System online.

repairing local reality damage…

Done.

The vortex vanished abruptly, his soul pulled themselves together, quickly taking its original shape.

His awareness came back first, then his lost strength, the black in his eyes was forcefully washed away by some unseen force.

He felt it curl around him, molding his existence back into what it was originally, it then sank into his soul and layered itself around a part of his soul that byron couldn’t describe.

It vanished shortly after, as if it wasn’t there, to begin with.

Byron gasped for breath, as he struggled to get up, he leaned on the wall for assistance and slowly stood up.

His vision felt muddy and burly, even though he felt strong, he somehow felt cripplingly weak, his legs wobbled as he walked.

He felt a constant pressure on his soul like something was constantly beating the barrier around his soul, the barrier got stronger until it disappeared shortly after.

Byron had never felt so terrified in his entire life, an unnatural amount of fear almost overwhelmed him.

He swore he heard whispers, promising him that horrible things would happen to him.

He shook his head, feeling his muddy vision clear a little as he did so, his chaotic and jumbled thoughts calmed down.
