Chapter 38: Classy Classical Class on Classes

Do you wish to select a class?

“Yes.” I said, as the room quieted down for me.

The familiar list of classes I could choose was there, with the exception of two more classes at the bottom of the list.

[Staff Priestess]

The Staff Priestess wields her staff and incantations to deal damage to her foes. Using prayers to her chosen deities, she may use a sliver of the god’s power to heal others, cleanse corruption, or repel evil, depending on the blessings and nature of said god.

[Berserk Pugilist]

Secret Class Requirements:

* Kill 100 higher ranked monsters without the use of magic or weapons.

* Reach 1 HP in a fight and recover to full health repeatedly.

* Have not obtained a class prior to this one.

The Berserk Pugilist is a mad warrior; with no need for frivolous and unreliable tools like magic or weapons, the pugilist forges their body itself into an aegis that can resist any blow and deal even more damage. In battle, they lose all inhibition, rational thought, and distinction between friend and foe; fighting until they or everything around them is dead.

[Apprentice Arcane Mage]

The Arcane Mage specializes in using raw mana and gaining class experience. With a firm foundation in the basics, owners of this class prepare themselves for a more powerful class advancement in the future; whether they wish to continue using raw mana or wielding derivatives and advanced forms of Arcane magic, like mind and soul magic.

[Priestess of Hurun]

Secret Class Requirements:

* Possess a blessing from Hurun, the God of Mercy.

* Is a compassionate being.

Blessed by the God of Mercy, suffering is an enemy Priestesses of Hurun no longer need to fear. As the paragon of compassion, your god can aid more and more people with the help of those who dedicate their lives in service of the downtrodden. Priestesses of Hurun use kind words and deeds – with a healthy dose of healing magic – to comfort those suffering physically, mentally, or spiritually.

[Elemental Omnimage]

Secret Class Requirements:

* Possesses a minimum of high affinity for all attributes.

* Possess [Mana Manipulation] and [Mana Perception].

* Possess a racial trait for sorcery.

* Survived an elemental magic attack from a higher ranked monster with a two-rank disparity or higher.

The Elemental Omnimage is a master of all five base attributes. Using combinations of the base elements, they create unique magic and effects that possess a greater power than the sum of its parts. Using the elements together is likely a necessity as they are not able to use any derivative or advanced forms of the elements.

[Sovereign of Gravity]

Secret Class Requirements:

* Possess maximum affinity for the Arcane Attribute and the Atypical Attribute – Force.

* Possess a racial trait for sorcery.

* Possess a divine shard.

* Possess [Mana Manipulation], [Mana Perception], and [Indomitable Will].

* Reached 0 HP and survived.

* Has slain a higher ranked monster with a two-rank disparity or greater, without possessing a class, using arcane and/or force magic.

* Has survived attacks from strength-based monsters with a combined total damage value of 100,000 HP or higher.

Wielding the unique and powerful magic of gravity, the Sovereign of Gravity can make it all but impossible to stand against them. Whether it be through directly applying a force on their enemies or changing their and their weapon’s weight, the Sovereign’s magic possesses a lethality only surpassed by its versatility. While it may be lacking in direct stopping power in comparison to magic of similar tiers of power, it is not the least bit less dangerous than they are.

I don’t know how long I was silent or how far my jaw had dropped, but I figured that picking it up off the floor and starting to explain might help the increasingly anxious and impatient spectators I had.

Durreg stared at the ceiling with a vacant, pleading stare, as if it would administer divine justice and strike me with thunder where I sat.

“A green class, and your first one to boot…” mom said quietly in astonishment.

After a few moments, Aunt Ighir started laughing heartily, much to the surprise of the rest of us.

“You never cease to impress, Kiara. You haven’t just surpassed my expectations; you smashed through them like they were a paper ceiling! Durreg, look at your cousin’s progress; why aren’t you like her?”

“Umm… Thanks, Auntie?”

“I hope you trip and break your necks.” Durreg said curtly to the two of us, Aunt Ighir’s laughter only growing louder.

Mom sighed, then smiled weakly at me.

“While it might not ultimately change your choice, let’s discuss the merits of each class first. Leave your mythic rarity class aside for now.”

“Mythic rarity?” I asked.

“A class or evolution’s color indicates its rarity, and we just give them names for simplicity’s sake. Common rarity does not get a special color, purple is uncommon, blue is rare, gold is legendary, and green is mythic. If there is rarity beyond that, then I am not aware of it. Red is an exception to the rule, where the color indicates that it is dangerous or evil rather than describe the rarity. It is commonly just called the ‘forbidden’ rarity, even though it isn’t a rarity at all. In any case,” Mom sighed again as she leaned forward, “tell us about your thoughts on these classes, then we’ll add our own to yours.”

I spent a few moments, then started crossing out the obvious classes.

“Obviously, I am not taking the common rarity classes. They’re just too weak compared to the other options, so they’re completely out of the question. Priestess of Hurun is also out. Not that I dislike the old man, but I am just not selfless enough to dedicate my life to healing and helping others. What I want is power, and I won’t get that from becoming a priestess.”

“Good call. We haven’t even mentioned the outrage that could arise from a dragon serving a god, even if it’s Hurun.” Aunt Ighir added helpfully.

“I have no intention of choosing Berserk Pugilist either, for the same reasons I didn’t choose the Berserker Dragon evolution. Even if there’s powerful synergy between the two. That leaves me with the last two choices, which I seem to have earned only after fighting the gorilla. Speaking of synergy,” I smirked at Durreg as he moaned in exasperation, “the Rainbow Dragon evolution has a very powerful synergy with the Elemental Omnimage class. Rainbow dragons gain powerful bonuses to the use of the base elements, and the omnimage class seems to offer many ways to utilize this power.”

“Even their weaknesses are the same, so you won’t have to deal with the number of restrictions that come with selections this powerful. I’d say it’s good enough contender to rival your other option, Kiara.” Durreg said, seeming to reluctantly put aside his envy to participate in the conversation.

“That option is the draconic shifter and sovereign of gravity. By elimination, draconic shifter is the only evolution that is good enough to work with sovereign of gravity, given that rainbow dragon would restrict both force and gravity magic and the rest are much weaker in comparison.” Mom said.

Aunt Ighir nodded towards her.

“Not to mention that it’ll shore up whatever weak spots her class may have and let her hide her real race and class in front of humans, amongst other sapient races as well. It’s a flexible and powerful option if you ask me.”

“Keep in mind that I doubt many monsters are as resistant to force and gravity magic as they are to the other elements. Gravity and force are also probably some of the most powerful magics you could wield in underground dungeons like the Abyss, right behind Earth of course.” Durreg smirked.

“Sure, sure.” I smiled placatingly, as I took in everything they had to say.

Everyone made really good points, which unfortunately makes this decision harder rather than easier for me. I suspect that that going with Elemental Omnimage and Rainbow Dragon is going to lead to more raw power, especially since the description on the Sovereign of Gravity class mentions that the class’s weakness is its relative lack of direct stopping power. It probably needs more creativity to use than the basic elements, but it’s more flexible and probably rewards cunning more.

With a wide range of elements to choose from, it’s hard to argue that I’ll be spoiled for choice with the elementalist route, while the shifter and gravity route offer specialization that is sorely missing in the other choice.

Another thing to consider is that dragon shifter will let me have a much easier time in human lands, as well as any territory belonging to other races of sapient beings, wherever that might be. I intend to explore both the world and the abyss, and this flexibility would be very useful in adapting to my environment.

“Ugh, why can’t things ever be simple…?” I groaned, holding my head in my hands.

“Tragic. The challenge you face invokes pity in the cruelest of men.” Durreg said with a deadpanned voice.

“Shut up, Durreg.”
