Tec Mage Chapter Twenty Seven: Harken

"PLEASE, I..I WANT TO LIVE" sobbed the little girl

The little girl was hunched in to the corner holding her hands up for protection, her eyes were filled with tears and her whole body was shaking in fear, the sight threw off the whole group, Atlas was feeling sorry for her and he could see that the whole party felt the same way

Atlas felt a little ashamed, his first thought was could this be a trick, a ploy to bring down the groups defences but the more he saw of the girl and the room she lived in the more he realised that this was a true little girl and not a disguise

Many question went though Atlas mind like what was this girl doing here, but Atlas couldn't get a sensible word out of her, the crying girl flinched every time Atlas was going to speak

Atlas didn't have a choice to get some answers from the girl he would have to do some thing he was uncomfortable doing, slowly he walked towards the girl

This made her fall in to a screaming frenzy "NO, NO, NO STAY AWAY" her hands started to bat at the air, she was trying to keep away Atlas with swipes to the air

Atlas reached out and grabbed the girls hand and pulled her to him giving her a massive huge with his big strong arms, Atlas felt a little uncomfortable showing emotions like this but it was a small sacrifice, Atlas could fill the little girl trying to escape as she trembled

Atlas stroked her dark black hair "shuuu shuuuu" whispered Atlas, he could feel dirt in the child's hair but he didn't stop

After awhile the girl stopped fighting and screaming and stayed in Atlas arms crying while tugging on his jacket, what had happened to the girl to put her in this kind of panic Atlas couldn't tell, as Atlas held on to the little girl he could feel that she was too light, if her weight was this light she wasn't getting enough to eat

Atlas went to place her down but as he bent over the girl would sob harder and cling to Atlas tighter

"Very well" said Atlas he would have to do this with one hand

"Mouses, bronze plates" Atlas reached behind him as the mana mouses that lived in his bag pushed out a stack of bronze stacked plates, these plates were used in Atlas Alchemy's Big Boy Travelling Companion but he could also use them in cooking, taking the middle plate out of the stack Atlas placed it on a rock, the stack of plates worked in the way of a sandwich, the middle plates were enchanted to be red hot and the outer ones were enchanted to be cold like ice, this nullified both enchantments and made it possible to carry both

On the red hot plate Atlas put a frying pan on top and started to cook with one hand, the little girl watch as she grasped tightly to Atlas, sometimes she would sniff and wipe away the tears but she was slightly drooling now, Atlas had put some butter in the pan and fried up a piece of fish with herbs and spices, he then place some stock in with the fish to make it more juicy and severed it with some rice, Atlas also pored some liquid from his flask in to a cup, the liquid wasn't water but a mix of fruit juice from the forest that the gnolls had got from foraging in the woods

Atlas placed the food and drink on a near by table, he placed the girl at a chair, the girl let Atlas go and started to eat, Atlas sat beside her and watched her eat, it didn't take long for her to destroy the food, Atlas also pulled out a tub of dried fruit ice cream and placed the whole tub in front of her

"What is your name" asked Atlas

She looked at Atlas in the eyes, bright blue eyes stared at Atlas "my name is Sophie" a spoon had dug out a piece of ice cream and was on it's way to her mouth

"Do you live here..... on your own, Sophie" asked Atlas

Sophie eyes opened wide as she had her first taste of ice cream, Atlas had managed to get in to intermediate skill in cooking with ice cream, before that the skill wouldn't grow, Sophie dug her spoon in to the ice cream some more, this caused her to lose her spoon as the ice cream was too hard for her to get a good amount on the spoon

Atlas picked up the spoon from the table gave it a wipe and dug more ice cream out with it, he was about to feed the ice cream to her when he stopped at her open mouth

"Sophie, do you live here on your own" asked Atlas a second time

Sophie was edging her head towards the spoon trying to get the sweet new taste in her mouth but Atlas pulled the spoon back and waited for an answer

"Yes" said Sophie

Atlas placed the spoon in Sophie's mouth

Sophie's eyes closed in bliss as a fresh new source of ice cream filled her taste buds

More ice cream was placed on the spoon, "why are you here" asked Atlas

Sophie again tried to edge her head forward and again Atlas withdrew the spoon just a little out of her reach

"My father brought me here" replied Sophie

Sophie swallowed the ice cream that Atlas gave her, her hands were tightly clasping on to the table and her cheeks went red with pleasure

"Where is your father now" asked Atlas

Sophie looked at the spoon filled with ice cream but this time she didn't edge forwards but answered the question stright away

"Over there" Sophie pointed at a paper screen

Atlas looked around to look at where she was pointing, while Atlas was distracted Sophie pulled the tub towards her and started to eat the ice cream with her bare hands, that was the power of sweet things to children

Atlas got up and pulled the screen away to revel a skeleton sitting at a table touching a piece of metal and a single journal on the table

The group that had been quite up till now let out a gasp, they weren't shocked to see a skeleton but was worried that Sophie was a little strange, living with a skeleton and calling it father with out a worried look on her face was weird

"Don't touch the metal, father touched it and now he's like that" explained Sophie though a mouthful of sweets

Instead of touching the metal Atlas went for the journal, after picking up the book Atlas sat down beside Sophie, by using 2 skills he read though the book incredibly fast

Perceptual Chronometer Intermediate level 3

Slows down the perspective of time allowing for more time to think

moment speed is 40% faster but the minds speed is 390% faster

Bookworm Intermediate level 3

Reading speed will increase by 310%

With both skills active Atlas could finish the book 7x faster than normal, to summaries the book was about what Sophie's father was doing here in the sunken crypt

Sophie's father was a necromancer but it would seem that he was in hiding, most people didn't like necromancer, in fact they actively hunted them, it also turns out that Sophie had learnt a necromancer skill which meant people were after her too, Sophie's father was worried about Sophie's life and so that was why they had held them self's in this dungeon

Sophie's father realised that living in a dungeon was no place for a child and so he was making something to bribe important people like kings and popes, that thing was a new magic metal

In total there was 5 magic metals and in his journal there was a step by step guide to making a 6th metal

1) there was a small insect that is know thought to be extinct, that had a metal like shell, their food was mana from other creatures as they were parasites

2)when they died they would leave only there metal like shell and after a along time the shells mana went neutral, this was important to the processing of the metal

3) after melting the shell with acid the shell was formed into a sheet

The final step was speculation, it would seem that Sophie father had died before he could write down what he had found out but he still did write some thing

4) The sheet of magical shell will leach mana out of the person who touches it, after it finish leaching mana it will become a shape shifting material that is powered by the users mana

Atlas thought that a material that could be shape shifting could be extremely useful but as he continued to read a small scribble was blow all of the notes

The mana drain is too much, i can't pull away, i can't believe i don't have enough mana, 50,000 mana and now it's draining my health, i wish i could be there for my little girl

Atlas looked back at the skeleton touching a sheet of material, Atlas felt sorry for both the father and the little girl, the father had tried his best to find a future only to die at the attempt but some thing was bothering Atlas

"How old are yo Sophie" asked Atlas

Sophie looked up from the ice cream and shrugged, her face was covered with cream and so was her hands

Atlas didn't know either, she looked 7 years old but the body of her father was striped of flesh and that would take along time but this was a game with magic and other things so Atlas decided to leave it alone

"Are you a necromancer" Atlas asked

Sophie almost dropped the tub and fear was in her eyes again

Atlas could see this, he pulled out a piece of cloth and wiped her hand and mouth "it's ok if you are, i won't judge you" said Atlas

This seemed to calm her down, she pushed Atlas hand away "i can do it my self dad"

Sophie looked at Atlas with shocked eyes, she had called Atlas dad and knew he had heard it, she quickly tried to changed the subject back

"Yes, i think i' am, daddy said so" while blushing Sophie pointed at the skeleton at the other table

Atlas thought about it, Sophie's father was a necromancer and so was she, they had barricade them self here because of the mistreatment they would come across in the world out side, Sophie's father knew the only way to save both of there lives from the hate and fear of others was the support of kings and popes but with out reason they wouldn't help and may also bring about there deaths, a bribe was what Sophie father came up with, he had spent time and effort to make a new magical metal to free them self from the hate of the people but Sophie's father had failed near to the end of his research and died from his experiments, who knows what would of happened if he succeeded, the whole story was desperately unhappy one with a tragic ending

"Wait, wait, lads calm down think about it first" behind Atlas, Nelious was holding his spirit hands up

Atlas hadn't noticed the reaction of the other spirits under the command of Nelious, when Sophie had mention that she was a necromancer the spirits had changed to easy going bystanders to angry weapon holding warriors, Atlas had forgotten that there lives were taken by a necromancer and that they had a burning hate for any who practice the dark arts, only Nelious kept calm

Sophie started to shake again, being a necromancer she was able to see spirits and what she saw scared her, 5 spirits were advancing towards her with weapons raised and a mad glare in there faces, tears had formed again and was dripping down the side of Sophie's face, just as 3 of the spirits reached her they disappeared leaving there weapons in the air for a brief second intil it fell to the floor with a clang

Atlas had his fist raised with the necklace tightly gripped in his hand, Atlas had found that not only could he summon the spirits with the necklace but also banish them and he had done so with the 3 advancing spirits, Nelious who was holding back 2 spirits was shocked at what had happened

"What have you done" asked Nelious, he was upset seeing his comrades disappear in front of himself, it seemed to bring back memory's of when they fought and lost against the necromancer that killed them

"I will bring them back in a second but first you have to make them realise that not all necromancers are bad, in fact with proper teaching that you could help with they could be a force for good" said Atlas

"Yes, yes of course just bring them back" replied Nelious quickly, even the two spirits that Nelious had stopped was listening to what Nelious was saying

Atlas went out side of the room were Sophie lived and back to were the bones of Goro were followed by Nelious and his two spirit comrades

"Spirits of the fallen" said Atlas

Atlas mana dropped again and 3 spirits came back into the living world looking confused and angry, before the could find there place Nelious rushed forwards and smacked the top of there heads

Atlas left Nelious to teach the rest of the spirits, Atlas was sure he would try his best, after all Nelious was the only spirit to realise that the dark arts aren't bad but the people that used them could be good as well as the evil

When Atlas got back to wear Sophie was sitting he could see she had quickly wiped the tears away, Atlas dried her checks with the same cotton cloth he had used to clean the ice cream from her mouth

"Its ok, they have had bad experiences with Necromancers in the past" explained Atlas

"It is fine, daddy said that this would happen" said Sophie

Atlas looked at Sophie, he was at a lost at what to do, he knew he couldn't leave this little girl here alone but to bring her with him was going to need explaining as well, looking in her big blue eyes Atlas gave up, he would bring her with him and to hell with what people thought about necromancers, the only problem he could think of was where to place her, if she was placed with the gnolls they wouldn't care about what magic she had learnt but a growing child needed companionship and some one to teach her, the orphanage where Dracken and Mary was placed was run down but they still taught how to read and write but again her magical ability would make her a target

The only choice was for Sophie to stay with the gnolls, both of them had to stay hidden, at least she wouldn't have to worry about her dark gifts and maybe even use them for the befit of the clan of gnolls

"Sophie, would you like to come with us to a new home wear you will be safe" said Atlas

Mary had been listening silently but at the thought of having a new member to the group she perked up and grabbed Drackens arm and tugged him closer so she could whisper

"a little sister" whispered Mary, it turned out that Mary had longed for a little sister, ever since she entered the orphanage she was surrounded by brutal rough boys and then she left to work with Atlas Dracken and Kevien who were all men and now she had taken steps in to the male dominated area of blacksmithing

"Sophie's eyes was swimming in tears of happiness, she could finally leave this dark place and enjoy some interaction with living things but she looked sad the next second

"I can't leave daddy" Sophie answered back

Atlas looked back at the hunched over skeleton that was the dead father of Sophie, as a necromancer Sophie saw the dead in a different way "then take him with you" replied Atlas

"I can't move him, he is stuck on that metal" answered Sophie

Atlas new that the metal she was talking about was in fact the new magical metal her father tried to make and had lost his life to, by reading the journal of Sophie's father Atlas learnt that the metal would feed off the mana of who ever touched it

"I will tame the metal so you can take your father" said Atlas

Sophie's eyes widen, she looked like she was grateful and scared at the same time "No no, it will kill you"

"It's fine i can be resurrected in 4 days if things go bad, my apprentices will take you to a safe place if things go badly" answered Atlas

Sophie looked like she was going to cry but she gave a massive snort and just nodded

Atlas placed a chair on the other side of the table that Sophie's father skeleton was, he looked at the magic metal with a worried look, if the journal that Sophie's father had written was correct the magical metal would drain the mana away from the person who touched it and the drain would be about 4 times greater than Atlas full mana, Atlas had about 12000 mana but that wasn't even close to Sophie's fathers 50000 mana and he had died from the mana drain, Atlas placed 2 enchanted mana potion test tube on the table, each one could fill his mana back full 3 times thanks to the enchanted space in side of each tube, so including the tube that was already in the Enchanted Gauntlets of Alchemy he could refill his mana 9 times for a grand total of 108000 mana, Atlas was sure that would be enough

Loki, Mary and Dracken surrounded Atlas, something big was about to happen and they were going to be near encase they were needed, Atlas slowly reached out to the metal like it was a growling dog, just as he was going to touch it Atlas looked over to Sophie, she had her hands over her ears and her eyes closed tight

"In for a penny" said Atlas as he touched the metal

The drain was instant, Atlas mana fell so fast that he had to push down on the mana tube on his gauntlets every couple of minutes, when the last drops of potion left the tube Atlas unscrewed the mana tube and replaced it with a fresh full mana potion tube, the mana drain was too great Sophie's father didn't have a chance, Atlas tried to pull away from the metal but it was like his hand was stuck on it with glue, the 2nd mana potion tube had ran out but the drain had slowed down alot but this was his last mana potion tube

With his last mana tube running out Atlas pondered who could tame this magical metal beast, Atlas had no choice to involve Loki, Atlas grabbed Loki's hand and started to drain the mana out of him using Soul Drain

Soul Drain Beginner level 9

Able to take mana from a any host by physically touching them and fill lost mana that the user has

The drain wasn't enough so Atlas let go, he was glad to find out that Loki wasn't stuck to him like he was stuck to the magical metal, now Atlas could safely drain mana from Mary and Dracken with out the chance of killing them, with Loki, Dracken and Mary being drained Atlas mana was going down ever slower

When Atlas mana dropped to zero his health started to drop in it's place, this was how Sophie's father was killed, the drop of health was even slower than before, Atlas wasn't worried he had his friends to drain mana from and also if needed a couple enchanted health potions tubes

Just as Atlas looked at Sophie's father he dropped from his chair as the magical metal realised him

"DAD" cried out Sophie, she rushed to his side and started to pick the bones, she placed them gently and carefully on some cotton sheets

Atlas was sure that the draining from the magical metal was coming to a close, Atlas wiped the sweat from his face, if it wasn't for his potions he would of died over nine times, Atlas started to relax and calm down when suddenly something grabbed his hand

Sophie was looking at Atlas like he was her hero, Atlas was still draining mana and now he had a forth person he was draining, the magical metal was draining so slowly and Atlas was using Soul drain on 4 people that his mana was replenishing it self slowly

"Don't give up mister" Sophie was unaware that Atlas wasn't in danger

Atlas just winked at Sophie

"Ding"

"Ding"

"Ding"

"Ding"

Atlas was bombarded with messages and he was freed from the draining touch of the metal

"Wow" said Atlas

The benefits for making a unique piece such as a painter painting a picture or sculptor carving a statue some times increased stats, Atlas alone had increased his stats by making useful items such as the attacking scarecrows and forming a perfect moonstone but the increase in stats and other things from making a new magical metal dwarfed the other stats, Atlas concluded the rarer and unique the items that was made the better the stats increase, after all there was many inventions, paintings and statues that increased stats but only 6 magical metals in the whole of Royal Road that existed

Atlas shaked his head, the increase in stats was massive, his magic alone would greatly improved but so did his other stats, Atlas held Harken in his hands and identified it

Harken

Harken: Durability 1500 / 1500.

Living metal.

Is a Living metal that can change shape at will of the user.

With a steam of mana feeding the metal it will change shape.

Restrictions: high acid potion techniques for melding the Harken together .

The Harken will drain 10000 mana a day

Self repair

Alchemy skills required.

The mana drain of 10000 a day would cause this magical metal to be very hard to use, not many people had that much mana, Atlas only had this much due to stats increase from inventions, Enchanting, Alchemy and levelling, Atlas thought that this metal was strictly for mana heavy people such as mages

Wrapping the metal in cloth Atlas placed it in his bag, he also passed his empty enchanted potion tubes to his mana mouses to be put back where they belong, Atlas with the help of Mary Dracken and Loki packed Sophie stuff in to bags, she her self didn't have alot but she refused to leave unless all of her fathers things was packed away too, Sophie's father had stacks of books and other things, there was so much that the group had to leave some of the sacks of bone dust behind

On the way out of the dungeon the group passed Goro the giant four armed skeleton, Sophie ran towards it, she bent over and tried to pick up one of the arm, the weight was too much for her tiny body to lift

"Get up, get up" said Sophie, mana was pouring out of her uniting with the fallen bones but without the complete skull that was now in Atlas pack it stayed motionless

Sophie eyes welled up with tears, she looked back at Atlas with a pleading look in her eyes, Goro had been her protector and been with her since she was an infant, Goro was part of her family just as much as her father had been

Atlas pulled the skull pieces out of his bag with the help of of the mana mouses and placed them back in place, with Sophie's power the bones melded back in to place, the bones started to raise

Atlas began to wonder if this was a bad idea, Goro the massive four arm skeleton giant had been a difficult enemy to defeat and that was when the two brothers and the spirits were with them, Goro stood to his full height towering over Atlas and the group, Sophie was dancing and clapping as Goro was reformed, Goro looked around but didn't attack, this revealed Atlas greatly, Goro's size alone was very intimidating but Sophie on the other hand looked angry with Goro

Sophie slapped the leg of Goro until Goro bent over and picked the little girl up and lifted her towards the bonny face of Goro

"You, you've been a bad boy" the tears in Sophie's eyes had disappeared and she had started to scold the giant Goro, in contrast it was a weird looking event, the tiny frame of Sophie could easily fit in the skull of Goro but here she was telling off this giant and if Atlas was mistaken it looked like Goro was hanging his head in shame

"Ok i can see that you've learned your lesson, lets go" Sophie pointed towards the door

Sophie hadn't realised the size of Goro was too big to fit though the small tunnels, to get Goro though the doors and though the narrow tunnels Goro was dismantled and his bones were carried by the group but with such massive bones each person could only carry one bone each, in the end Atlas used his mana mouses to carry the rest of the bones, during the two days underground Atlas had enchanted a new bag that held 18x the normal amount but at the cost of zero weight reduction, this was used for carrying his excise mana mouses that didn't have any weight and we're mere dolls

When the group had reached out side they all raised their hands to block the bright sun from there eyes, Sophie was shaking with excitement, who knows how long she had been down in the Sunken Crypt but now she could see the sun after who knows long, at the entrance their was a couple merchants waiting for people to return and buy useless drops

As the group walked by the players started to huddle and talk to each other

"Who are they"

"Where are the rest of the group"

Just as the players started to surround Atlas and the group to ask them questions the mana mouses poured out of the entrance of Sunken Crypt carrying giant bones on there backs, this freaked out the players who quickly jumped out of the way, some could be seen climbing there wagons, no matter how powerful someone had become there was still fears that couldn't be overcome easily

Sophie grabbed on to Atlas robe "where to now" asked Sophie

"To a place were you will be safe and maybe practice your own unique magic with out being prosecuted, in other words your new home" said Atlas

Sophie smiled and grabbed on to Atlas hand and skipped beside him, the grabbing of his hand shocked Atlas, he wasn't used to this and he was going to pull back his hand but in a way this was part of the healing of being alone for so long and subconsciously he knew that, slowly Atlas carefully closed his fingers around the little hand

"To home" Sophie pointed at the sky

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back at the gnoll's cave, near the forge that Mary worked at, under a table that held her tools curled in to a tight shaking ball was the black wolf that Atlas had bought with potions, the black wolfs name was Midnight and Mary had looked after it ever since it entered the gnolls home, when it was first brought here it growled and sneezed at everyone but it soon learnt the overwhelming power of the gnolls and other inhabitants, the black wolf had came down from the mountain to escape the other black wolfs and carve his own area, the wolf was level 20 so naturally he headed for a place to hunt lower level monsters for food only to find it self being hunted by player and captured by Atlas, when the wolf was placed in the gnolls cave he had rushed around trying to find it's freedom, the black wolf stayed away from the gnoll's that protected the front door and with each passing day the wolf become more frantic and desperate, food and water was offered to him but the black wolf had great distrust and never accepted the food

Then one day the wolf lashed out and jumped at a gnoll child only to be stopped by a hand that grabbed the scuff of the black wolf's neck holding it in the air like a doll, the one to stop the black wolf was Mary, she had been working at the forge and noticed the behaver of the black wolf, in truth if Mary hadn't stopped the black wolf then the black wolf would of been killed, even the gnoll children had a level of 50 and could easily killed him, that was why the black wolf was allowed to freely move about, it wasn't a theft to anyone in the cave

Mary had carried the black wolf to the forge, the black wolf didn't even struggle, it could now feel the fighting spirit of the gnolls and it was directed towards the him, Mary had placed him under the table for his own protection, day by day the black wolf and Mary got closer to each other, Mary was able to feed the black wolf from her hand, she also named the black wolf Midnight

Then the day came when Mary had to go and fight in the Sunken Crypt and Midnight was left alone in a cave with gnolls that all had there fighting spirit pointed at Midnight, this was why he was curled up under a table, he didn't dare to move away from the table, food was provided by the gnolls but there coldness scared Midnight and so this was the currant sate and reason for Midnight being curled up shaking under a table

Midnight missed Mary, she was he's protection and so much more powerful than him self, animals respect strength and Mary was quickly becoming Midnight's Alpha, suddenly a log dropped from the forge, even though Mary wasn't here the enchanted forge still burned strongly, Midnight watched the log roll and stop near the table he was hiding under, looking at it closely Midnight found that it was moving and a small crack was appearing on the surface, Midnight didn't dare move out from the table and just witnessed the changes of the fallen log, over an hour the log wiggled and spilt apart until a snake with wings appeared

Forge had finished his metamorphosis, when he had entered his cocoon he was the size of a medium sized dog, after eating Atlas food and fire type mana Forge had became fat and plump but now after finishing his transformation he was the same weight but longer and thinner, what used to be two small horns on Forge's back was now two wings, Forge skin had changed to a shiny black scales with vines of glowing red stretched all over Forges body, the eyes instead of being black like before had a strange light source deep in side, Forge's tail was reinforced with an extra layer of scales making it even harder

Now that Forge had left his cocoon he was longer and was able to reach the top of the table when stretching with enough of his tail on the floor to wrap on it's self in three circles the size of a dust bin lid, while stretching Forge's wings used up there maximum space, each wing was a tiny bit smaller than one would expect for a creature of Forge's size, Forge had his mouth wide open taking a deep breath of air, in Forges mouth stood four fangs that held the colour of deep amber red of burning coal

Midnight was greatly interested in this new thing, Forge had been in the cocoon and placed out of Midnight's view in the burning forge and so they had never meet but now Midnight was face to face with Forge, Midnight was bigger than Forge but unknown to Midnight Forge had a greater level even than the gnolls guarding the front door, Midnight raised his paw and placed it on top of Forge's head pushing it down

"Stop it" yelled Forge

Midnight was tired of being at the bottom of the chain of power and now he had came across a smaller animal that he felt he could make in to underling, again he place his paw on top of Forge's head

"I'm warning you" Forge knocked the paw off his head with his tail

Midnight was excited and becoming even bolder, again he raised he's paw to place on top of Forges head

"ENOUGH" Forge had raised him self and now was taller by a foot than Midnight, if it was that alone Midnight wouldn't of stop but as Forge raised his voice a mane of fire erupted from his head to the tail just like Atlas fire cape skill

Midnight was so shocked he backed away under the table not noticing his paw was slightly burnt, shaking and making him self as small as possible Midnight licked he's burnt paw while giving small looks at Forge

Forge was glad to be out of the cocoon but now Forge was angry, he gave Midnight a sharp look which made the black wolf almost jump and hit his head on top of the table he was under, slightly satisfied Forge climbed back in to the burning hot forge, he was still angry but not because of Midnight, it was down to what Atlas did

"Just you wait, i've got a bone to pick with you" sneered Forge
