Chapter Fifty-Eight

Chapter Fifty-Eight

You decided it would be best to first talk to Engie about the door situation. How am I supposed to calm him down after he finds out someone, who I guess is Soldier, left a key under the rock? What time do I have to learn Russian with all of this school stuff and battles? I know where the battle is taking place, but can we go back to explain the plan, or do I just have to use the tablet and hope everyone knows what to do? How am I supposed to handle all of this? I-

"What is on Leetle Girl's mind?" Heavy interrupted your train of thought.

"Oh! Well, it's a bunch of different things, really. The main concern right now is how Engie-Oh! I forgot to tell you what happened last night!" Heavy's brow furrowed.

"Between Leetle Girl and ze short man?" Visible confusion laced his face.

"No, well, sort of, but not? Anyway, the point is that someone broke in last night and broke our water filter." Heavy's look of confusion mixed with worry.

"Zhis is bad," he mumbled to himself.

"Exactly. I have to report that a key was left under a rock outside of the door. That's how the enemy got in, which we think was the Blu Strategist or Blu Spy."

"Very bad. Go. Report quickly. I will collect others." Heavy ordered you while waving you off.

"Yes sir," you turned around to jog towards the Medbay. What can I do about this?

As you reached the doors, you gingerly opened them. Medic's eyes looked up towards you from his desk, his glasses low on the bridge of his nose. His head was still lowered as he was going through papers. Without saying anything, you urgently walked over to Engie.

"Did jou figure it out?" Medic called over his shoulder.

"Soldier and I think so!" You called back.

"Figure what out?" Engie rumbled, acting as if he had just woken up. You waited for him to sit up and took out the key.

"Someone left this under a rock outside. The locks were fine and undamaged. The assailant had no trouble getting in."

"Soldier.." Engie growled softly. "Ah knew Ah shouldn't 'ave given him a key! Now we're in this darn mess, because he cou-"

"Sorry to cut you off, but this isn't Soldier's fault. It's either the Blu Strategist of Blu Spy," you interrupted to keep him from blaming Soldier.

"...You're right, you're right. Ah'm awfully sorry about that, but wha' do we do now?" Engie looked up at you from the bed expecting an answer. Shit, what do I say?

"U-uh, well, I think it's best for you to recover for now, a-and-"

"I brought team!" Heavy called while you could hear Medic make angry German noises about everyone invading his workspace. Thank God.

"Who do we have'ta pound tha skull in, huh?" Demo shouted. You could hear Spy's eyes roll.

"Help me up darlin', Ah think Ah can go join 'em," Engie started shifting his weight to stand up. You turned to help just as he got his feet on the floor, so when he wobbled slightly, you caught him. "Thank ya kindly."

As you helped Engie over to the others, not entirely sure if he was physically ready for this, they whispered amongst themselves. The more you thought about it, the less you realized they must have known about what had happened with Engie and you fight. To be honest, you preferred to keep it that way.

"Alright, alight. What happen'd? It feels like everyone's losing their minds ova here," Scout gestured to the incessant roar of whispers amongst the men.

"Calm down Scout. No one's goin' crazy. They're just talkin'," Engie reassured him.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

"Yeah, yeah. Guess you're right... but I'm freaking out." Scout had a deadpan stare.

"And why would ya say that?" Scout looked puzzled for a second.

"I-I don't know. I guess I just feel panicked on the inside, y'now? Like somethin' big's gonna happen."

"Uh, sure. Ah guess Ah can attest to that."

"...what does 'attest' mean again?"

"Nevermind." The other mercs, still whispering amongst themselves, didn't even notice Scout concern. "Hey fellas." Engie got your team's attention before being sent into a coughing fit. Stumbling a little, you had to really hold your ground to keep from toppling over. Medic rushed over to help you support the small man. Everyone silently watched as Engie caught his breath again. "As... Ah was sayin', we have an issue."

"No kiddin'," Scout interjected.

"Scout," Spy scolded him.

"What? Engie's practically dyin' ova here, I have a bad feelin', and someone broke in and nearly cost us Strats' first battle!" Everyone silenced.

"...The boy makes a good point. Will someone please explain what's going on?" Spy puffed on his cigarette, seeming frazzled.

"Okay! Let's just start witht the first thing first, alright?" You made your presence known. "Will someone please pull up a chair for the Engineer?"

"Now Ah don't need-" Engie started.

"Yes you do. I don't know about Medic, but I'm having trouble holding you up whenever you cough. I'm about to let you fall to the ground."

"Aye! Here, lass," Demo pulled Medic's chair from under his desk, and you helped Engie onto it.

"Thank ya, darlin'," Engie said quietly.

"Of course," you told him. "Now. The most important thing that has happened here recently is that one of the Blus got into our base, which I'm sure Heavy managed to tell you all, correct?" Everyone nodded solemnly. "Okay. Does everyone know what Engineer was working on in his room for the past few days?" Everyone nodded "yes" except for Scout. Right. He slept through it all. "Well, for those of you who don't know, he was trying to fix the water filter. During this time, he was unknowingly drinking lead-poisoned water. At least, that is what we believe during this time."

"That's what put the short one into the Medbay?" Scout questions.

"Yes and no. Yes being that that is what started the care, but no as in... I sent him to respawn. If... you know what I mean." Scout gasped.

"Did you guys know about dis?" Scout's jaw dropped.

"Alright. What happen'd?" Demo crossed his arms, trying not to laugh. "Ya must have a good excuse ta send one of yer own to tha hills!"

"Well...," you looked over at Engie, who nodded slowly with a slightly concerned look on his face. "He was attacking Medic in a crazed state..." You trailed off. It was silent before someone spoke up.

"And why would he do zhat?" Spy broke the silence, getting in on the joke.

"Um...well. I don't think-"

"Ah had some personal feelin's that were amplified by the lead," Engie cut you off. "Ah wasn't thinkin' straight."

"What do 'ou 'ave against ze man?" Spy questioned him. Part of you thought he just wanted to hear it from Engie himself. Engie shook his head like he was trying to think of an answer. Before you could butt in and save him, he spoke.

"Ah was... jealous.. of the relationship he had with our new team member." I can't believe he just admitted to that. Not that they couldn't have figured it out, but he just said that.

"Dat's... a little weird," Scout rubbed the back of his neck. Some of the others shrugged or nodded in agreement.

"And that's why Ah'm embarrassed to say it. Once ya think about it, it doesn't make any sense. When Ah was on the lead, though, it felt like the perfect plan was to just get rid of Medic. That didn't make sense either, because he'd just respawn! Ah was really in the wrong headspace there..." Engie trailed off.

"Not to mention it vas probably ze lead affecting jou," Medic chimed in to clarify what took place.

"Yeah, no, that makes sense dere," Scout added him while the others agreed. "No wonder we've been using water bottles for the past few days." Soldier looked confused.

"A-Anyway, we need to figure out what to do next. Obviously, the smart thing would be to tell Miss Pauling, but do you all have any other ideas beyond that?" You decided to move the conversation along.

"Vell, I zhink ze best course of action vould be to worry about ze Engineer getting better, which I can do, and for jou to make jour battle plan," Medic chimed in.

"Good idea."

"Oi agree, it would be nice ta know where ya want me ta stand ta knock some heads off some shoulders," Sniper laughed. The room felt more lighthearted as the men got more excited about the thought of your first battle.

"And she'll do wonderfully, won'tcha darlin'?" Engie asked you. I... honestly don't know. I only have today to make this plan so I can explain it tomorrow...fuck.

"Of course she will! This will be a plan better than any American general's!" Soldier hollered out, causing your team to cheer and Pyro to vigorously clap his hands. Despite all of the optimism, you couldn't help to die a little inside as your worries engulfed you.

"S-So! Are we all on the same page now?" You tried to end the situation in order to leave.

"You betcha!" Sniper snapped his fingers in front of him in a "jolly-good" way.

"Okay then! Engie, if you'll go back to resting, and I can get back to planning, we'll be ready for the battle." You clapped your hands together.

"I can't wait to get sweet revenge!" Soldier pumped his fist in the air, and your comrades did the same.

"Revenge!" They all cried and laughed. Before bothering to talk to anyone, you snuck out to your room.

What am I going to do?
