9th Chapter - An aide's job

Typer’s room: Hello guys. Sorry for the delay, but here is the chapter!

As I said before, I have this story made up to chapter 18 (and working on 19 right now), so the only reason I didn’t upload this yesterday was because I was lazy. Guilty. Anyway, uploading it now and tomorrow should have another update too, so stay ready! ^^

As I said before, this is VASTLY a work in progress, and wasn’t made to be posted initially, so there might be some inconsistencies. If so, please do tell me, as I want to make it an enjoyable read ^^

May your reading be enjoyable.

----

In front of me stood a young girl, no older than four years old, with long black hair and silky white skin. Cute features that made even the most heartless bandits melt with but a mere gaze. Wearing black cotton robe that were a tad too big on her body, but this only made her look even more adorable as it reminded someone of a kid trying to be an adult.

She spun around a couple of times to see how the robe looked on her, and after feeling satisfied, she turned away at the same time I did and turned towards Ping.

“It seems to be good.” I said with a nod after taking my attention from the mirror.

“Ho Ho Ho. Is there anything that wouldn’t be good on you?” Tian asked with a proud tone, and I blushed slightly.

“Miss, you are leaving her embarrassed.” Ping said in a solemn tone, which made Tian look at her with a mischievous smile.

“Very well.” Tian said with a nod. “I shall stop praising the cute plebeian and go to my classes.” She said while closing her fan and turning back. “I came mostly to guarantee that she would get the appropriate equipment for when she started to serve me.”

“I guessed as much.” Ping said with a sigh. “Then, I’ll take young Lia to start on her training.”

Tian nodded satisfied before leaving the room, taking the other aides with her and leaving me alone with Ping. She turned to me and let out a short sigh before saying.

“Once you receive your official aide’s robe, you’ll be forbidden from wearing your shorts, young girl.” She said to me in an reproaching tone.

“No!” I said in a defiant tone. “It gets too breezy without it, I don’t like it!” Besides, this is the last link i have to my life as a male. There’s no way I’m giving up this last part!

“Your official clothing won’t be as large as this one, and wearing pants beneath it might leave you with an appearance that is unbefitting of lady Tian’s aid.”

I pouted. Yeah, she did have a point there, but… But… I don’t like it. Why do I have to not wear shorts?

“Can’t we make an uniform that I can wear with shorts then?” I asked excited.

“No can do, little aid.” Ping said with a serious face. “We already gave too much for letting you make your robe sleeveless. We can’t have you changing your uniform even more.”

I pouted for a moment while staring at her, but Ping was like an unmovable mountain and barely blinked at my supreme attack. Sighing, I finally gave in to her demands. In the end, it was only a matter of time before that happened, so all that they are doing is taking it out sooner…

While I nodded sullenly, I quickly put my hand within the robe and pulled out the pendant that mother left to me so many years ago, putting it over the clothes. I didn’t really bother with it touching my skin at all, it’s just that I liked fiddling with it from time to time.

Ping looked at it with a slightly curious gaze.

“I’ve been meaning to ask, but what is that?” Ping asked with a raised eyebrow. “You didn’t take it off even when you were changing your robes.”

“This is an amulet obviously” I smiled teasingly at her, making her frown. But then I answered seriously.

“Well, this is the only thing I have from mom.” I said with a sad smile. “She disappeared when I was one year old, and said to always carry it with me.”

“You remember what your mother said when you were one year old?” Ping asked me surprised.

“She left a message to father.” I replied briefly, and Ping widened her eyes before nodding, probably feeling a bit silly at the idea of me remembering things from when I was one year old, she’s not far from it though.

“I see...” She said while motioning for the door. I quickly followed her with a jog to keep up with her long legs, but didn’t really feel all that tired since I was used to running around. “Well, starting now with your training, we’ll start a bit with manners and posture, later on move to more household tasks and caring for your master.”

“Manners and posture?” I asked curious while taking my attention back to the aid.

“Yes. Being the main aid from lady Tian means that you will stand besides her for the longest time possible. This also means that whenever she is meeting with other nobles, you will also follow her, thus, whatever action you take shall also end up reflecting on her image.” I nodded at her words while digesting the information. “Thus, even if your skills on household chores aren’t all that good, as long as the way you show yourself to the others is exemplary, you will still be doing a good job.”

I took some time to understand her words. Basically, my first and foremost job would be to make Tian look better in front of other nobles by acting properly? It felt a bit confusing at first, but with some thought it made sense.

Amongst the noble, image is sometimes more important than the actual power of a person, so having me who may grow into a spiritualist in the future as an aid would show how much power her household had. But for that, I would need to act respectfully towards her.

“I see… Then what will I have to do?” I asked while looking up at her.

“Well, firstly, we have to fix the way you walk.” She said briefly, and with that she lightly poked my back, making me straighten myself surprised. “You must always keep the proper posture when walking. It might be a bit uncomfortable right now, but once you get used to it, you won’t even notice it anymore.” She said briefly.

I nodded hurriedly while trying to keep my posture. As she said, it did feel a bit uncomfortable, so I had to consciously keep fixing my posture every time, and whenever I lost focus for a moment, my posture would relax a bit more.

Grimacing while walking on the corridors of the house, I noticed that Ping would sometimes take a glance at me and smile a bit satisfied.

“Neneh, Miss ping. What else am I going to do?” I asked when I noticed that she was taking her time to reach the destination.

“Well, for today, besides your posture, you will mostly follow me and watch. This might work better than trying to cram everything on your first day.” She told me, so I nodded.

So, that was mostly what I did.

I kept following Ping around as she worked around the house. Most of the time she would simply approach some other aid, exchange a few words before going away. From the little I could get from her words, she was mostly passing on the orders to each aid on what they should do, like clean said room, go prepare dinner, go buy this and so on.

The whole time I noticed that not only her but also the other aids kept a perfectly straight column while walking and doing the chores. After visiting around thirty or so different aides and introducing me to all of them without a fault, telling that I would be the new trainee, she finally felt satisfied and left to work on something herself.

Following her, she led me to what looked like the kitchen, but on the corner of the room was a lowered part that led to a dirt floor where a couple of large basins laid on the ground. She approached one of them before lifting it with one of her hands. Seeing her doing that, I immediately understood what she was going to do and took the other basin myself.

She looked surprised for a moment before nodding approvingly. She took us out of the house and unto a garden where we found a well. She approached the well and dropped her basin there.

“Since you are so eager to help, go to the mansion and ask for the laundry basket while I take some water for our basins here.” Ping instructed me. I nodded to her and prepared to dart off, but before I left she reminded me. “And remember to keep your posture!”

I turned to her confused for a moment before blushing and straightening my column, then I went off walking as fast as I could while keeping the correct posture.

I entered the mansion once again and searched for the nearest aid, who was working on cleaning the windows of the corridor. Approaching her, i asked where i could find the laundry, and she offered to take me there cheerfully.

She made sure to guide me by my hand the whole time she walked towards the place. I would feel embarrassed, but there wasn’t much I could do myself, so I simply followed her while letting the girl take me.

Not that I minded actually. Besides, even if she tried to hide it, she had a blissful smile in her face.

Once we reached the room, I thanked her while giving the girl who took her time a small treat.

“Thank you big sis!!!~” I told her with a wide smile before turning to the door and opening it. The aid blushed heavily while making a silly smile.

Inside the room was something akin of a huge depot, where I could see some food that were preserved and some cleaning products. While looking around, I soon found a large basket filled to the brim with dirty clothes. With the amount of things shoved in it made it almost as tall as my shoulder. And that was a lot, since it was a wide basket and my small stature doesn’t help it.

The aid widened her eyes when she saw that, and quickly came to help me, imagining how heavy the basket probably was.

I simply rolled up my sleeves and picked the basked up. As I said, I’m stronger than a kid my age should be, even with my frail looks and all.

Well, this isn’t to say that I had no trouble carrying it. If it was any heavier I wouldn’t be able to move very well, besides, it blocked most of my field of vision when I raised it. Not that I couldn’t manage it, though. So while swaying on my way towards the well, I almost stumbled a couple of times.

Once I reached Ping, she stared at me in surprise for a moment before quickly helping me drop the basket beside the basins. Then she had me do another quick trip to the depot once again, and this time I brought what we were going to use to clean the clothes. Which is somekind of herbs and flowers for aroma.

Afterwards, she started teaching me how to wash the clothes. For each different type of cloth I had to use a slightly different technique, and since she also had to show me what I had to do, we took almost the entire afternoon washing clothes.

She even gave me some simpler ones made of cotton and linen, since these were a lot easier to work with than silk. Although she had to fix a lot of things in the way I did it, even to the point that I had to keep fixing my posture every few minutes, she still said that she was proud of the way I was eager to learn.

“But all I did was to make your job longer...” I said sullenly while looking at the poorly washed robe in my hand and compared to the pristine ones in her hands.

“That is something for me to worry about. As a trainee, it’s your job to make sure that this won’t happen for too long.” She said with a smile, and I nodded at her words.

She then picked up the poorly washed clothes and started washing them again while pointing out what I did wrong. I nodded while hearing her words and focusing deeply on what she was doing.

After she finished washing the last cloth, she had me help hanging them to dry. This one I should be able to do even with my eyes closed since it wasn’t anything too difficult.

Or so i thought…

The body of a four years old is too short to reach the rope…

I grumbled annoyed while sitting on the ground pouting. I heard Ping chuckle slightly at the scene before telling me to sit correctly. I quickly fixed my sitting position by sitting on my knees, which was the proper way of doing it.

The only problem was that it didn’t even take five minutes before my legs started hurting from the position. Luckily, it wasn’t like I was without counter measures. Using my rudimentary skill on manipulating my spirit, I somehow managed to redirect it to be on the inner part of my shins, and with that the pain immediately went away as I felt my legs becoming a bit more resistant.

Meanwhile I patiently awaited for the moment when Ping had finished hanging the clothes. She turned to me and said.

“We finished taking care of the clothes for today and it's getting late…” She peeked at the sky for a moment before nodding. “Since you won’t spend your night here, let’s call it a day and change you back to your clothes before sending you back to your father, okay?”

I nodded weakly at her words before turning back to the basket and basin and carrying them back to the house. Once done, I made my way back to the building and left the basins near the kitchen, where Ping called a few other aids to come and clean it, while I took the basket back to the depot.

Then I changed my clothes back to the dress I usually wore, which had my favorite shorts, and left the used uniform together with the few other clothes that had already appeared on the basket.

I immediately recognized the robe that Tian was using before due to the sprakling purple cloth. She probably changed it for a bath or something.

Leaving, Ping escorted me on the way out and said that Tian wouldn’t be able to see me to say goodbyes as she was a bit occupied with her math classes. I nodded at her and immediately made my way towards the front gate. But not before receiving a warning to keep my posture correct.

This is going to take a long time to get used to…

Sighing in my mind, we quickly reached the gate, where Ping opened for me before saying one last goodbye. However…

“LIA YOU TYRANT! DON’T THINK YOU ARE GOING TO ESCAPE FROM ME JUST BECAUSE YOU ENTERED A NOBLE’S HOUSE!” A loud child’s voice came from the other side of the gate.

Ping blinked surprised and turned to me confused. I simply smiled a bit awkwardly for a moment.

“It’s a friend of mine...” I said with an awkward smile as Ping opened the gate.

“Xin! What do you think you are doing?” Another voice, a lot more mature sounding and also strangely familiar echoed.

“Shut up brother! I have to take revenge on that girl!” The childish voice echoed angrily, and was about to say something else before noticing the door opening. Once the owner of the voice saw me, his eyes became ferocious. “Lia! Come on! It’s time for my revenge, so fight me!” he said while clenching his fist.

I stared at the boy in front of me for a moment before smiling widely. With long black hair tied in a pony-tail behind his head, he had a surprisingly cute face for someone who was always coming to buy a fight with me.

Besides him, I immediately recognized the armored man that was kneeling on the ground trying to calm the boy down.

“Wha! If it isn’t the guard that helped me in!” I said cheerfully and saw as he turned to me in shock.

“BROTHER YOU TRAITOR!” The boy, Xin, shouted while grabbing the guard’s neck and swinging back and forth.

“So you two are siblings!” I said while clapping my hands together. “Never would have guessed, Xin!” I told the boy with a happy smile, and saw as he clearly became even redder than before.

“WAAAH! SHUT UP AND FIGHT ME YOU ANNOYING GIRL!” Xin shouted angrily while punching airs around him with such ferociousness that leaves him exhausted.

I simply smiled at his panting, exhausted at his earlier action, while I see Ping and the guard looked at the two of us confused.
