3rd Chapter - Daughter... Of lovebirds

Typer’s room: Three releases today, this is the first one.

Well, being a bit mean, this is one heck of a cliffhanger, if I do say so myself. Hope you guys enjoy it! For those who want to know, next chapter comes in a few hours ^^ (insert deceptively kind-looking smile here.)

May your reading be enjoyable.

---

Like a bird, mother soared through the sky, kicking the air whenever we started to lose some speed. I noticed her looking at me in worry for a moment, but it seems that my excitement overpowered my surprise slash fear, because I started to giggle happily on her arms.

A small smile of relief appeared in her face as she focused back on keeping us flying, giving a quick look around she focused her gaze into a black roofed building that laid on the corner of the city, then she tilted her body so that her head was turned right into its direction and kicked the air.

We moved in a straight line towards that building, descending at a frightening speed that made me wonder how we were going to survive the fall.

However, just as we were about to fall on the roof, she twisted her body so that her feet were falling first.

And then, she landed.

I was shocked for a moment, trying to understand what was happening. It was all so sudden that it simply didn’t make any sense to me. One moment we were falling at a ridiculous speed, the other we simply stopped. There wasn’t that feeling of inertia covering your body! We simply stopped.

And even then, the roof we landed didn’t make a single sound! It almost looked like what fell here was a feather instead of a full sized woman and her baby daughter!

Daughter…

Anyway, mother landed softly on the roof, to the point that no one at all noticed us approaching. I was about to start laughing cheerfully, amazed by how she did it, but the moment I opened my mouth she quickly put her fingers atop of my lips.

Blinking surprised for a moment, I kept myself quiet as mother walked towards the edge of the roof and spied the ground beneath us. But after seeing that there wasn’t anyone, she quickly hopped down.

This time I made certain to pay attention to what mother did when landing. Different from when she jumped, mother let the energy flow outside of her body, making something like a vortex that sucked her feet upwards, and the moment her feet touched the vortex, it somehow ended up affecting the whole of her energy at once.

And just like before, we landed on the ground without any kind of impact.

Nodding satisfied, mother quickly walked on the nearby streets, discretely making her way to the building.

Getting in front of the door, she knocked a few times as I heard the sounds of metal hitting metal. Only then did the other people on the streets finally notice mother, and some of the men were staring at her greedily.

I grimaced at them for a bit, but I also felt a bit scared when I saw one of the men’s wearing a long sword on his waist as well as wearing what looked like some leather armor. He stared at mother for some time and a dirty smile appeared on his face.

Not liking that, I quickly went on to start crying, which caught not only the attention of mother, but also from everyone else in the vicinity.

Mother stared at him coldly, angry at the fact that he had scared me, and the man looked surprised because of that. But he ended up simply running away because of how everyone got their sights on him. Afterwards mother quickly calmed me by lightly tapping the back of my head.

I stopped crying just in time, as the door opened in a hurry and father looked at us in confusion. Mother simply smiled at him while lifting the small box she brought from our home.

Father’s face clearly brightened and he pulled her in for a kiss.

Sweet moment later, father picked me up and snuggled up to me. Although I endured it for a moment, I soon started squirming, as he reeked of sweat to the point that his skin was moist.

When mother took me back, I looked confused at father, wanting to know why he was like that, and I finally understood when I saw the inside of the building.  Anvils, hammers and forges and so on were spread within the building, with many different burly looking men working on it.

Well, it looked like they were working until they saw mother, because all of them turned to us and started cheering in a silly way until father turned to them and started shouting angrily at the guy.

He turned to the men working and started shouting at them as he kicked one or another that were nearby.

Well, the scene was a pretty cheerful one despite the violence.

As I giggled at their craziness, I felt as mother suddenly tense up slightly, her head turning to one side for a brief moment before she looked back to my father, talking to him with a cheerful smile. Still feeling bothered by her sudden reaction, I decided to try something.

Quickly closing my eyes, I focused my senses, feeling the energy of the people and other things around me, I quickly scanned the area, searching for anything strange. It was a long shot, but not having much else to do anyway made me do it.

Well, it seems that I actually found something.

The people around us mostly had an energy much like father’s, both in quality and amount. However, far away, a bit close to the edge of my senses, I felt another energy that was clearly different. Being not only stronger than mine, but also having a different quality to it.

I watched it curious for the time being, feeling as it made its way through the sea of lesser energies, all of which clearly opened space so that it could move through.

Noticing that, not only it was approaching us, I could also already hear some clamor on the streets around us, I opened my eyes, looking towards the commotion at the same time that mother and father did. Both of them grimaced slightly before turning towards the direction of the commotion and kneeling on the ground.

I blinked surprised, but thanks to my toddler nature, I didn’t need to do such, so I kept staring around, waiting for whoever it was to appear.

Then, I saw it. A man, wearing a bright yellow robe that set him apart from the simple linen robes of the crowd. His long hair tied in a ponytail behind his head while his young looking face had a permanent appearance of annoyance.

As he walked, the people would look at him in awe before bowing.

I wondered why they did that. I mean, he did look important and all, but he did not look all THAT important. Feeling confused, I wondered if it had something to do with that energy that I kept feeling, but I soon decided that it wasn’t it.

Why?

Well… Although he does have more energy than me, it’s not all that much, really. And compared to mother’s, he is nothing.

Maybe it has to do with that badge he wore on his chest? Could be. It was a small circular badge with a single star carved in it and it sure looked fancy.

The man simply walked past us and towards father, whom he quickly motioned for him to rise. The two exchanged a quick talk before father finally nodded and went inside the smithy. Once he got back he brought with him a small sack, from which he took some coins and paid the man.

The man quickly counted them before nodding and walking away. Father sighed loudly and simply shrugged as if saying that he didn’t have a choice. Thankfully, he didn’t seem all that distressed, so it might not be an extortion or something of the kind.

On his way back, I noticed the man giving a quick glance towards mother, making a slightly confused face for a moment before finally shaking his head slightly.

After that, mother and father talked a bit more while he sat down to eat his boxed lunch. Seeing that there wasn’t much for me to do, and feeling tired from the earlier excitement, I simply let myself fall asleep once again.

Life as a baby is difficult…

Waking up when I felt some movement, I noticed that father was giving a long and dragged goodbye to mother, who seemed as reluctant to let go of him as he was. The two really are a couple of lovebirds, huh?

Feeling a strange happy feeling in my chest, I started laughing happily, which made the two surprised. After a group hug we finally separated from father and took our way back home.

And from the way mother walked, she was clearly cheerful, skipping through the path while humming a cheerful song to herself. Feeling infected by her own happiness, I also started laughing with her, which made her become even more cheerful, which made her skip even more.

We got out of the village through the gate this time as mother quickly made her way to our house, starting with cheerful skips. Feeling the refreshing wind in my body I started to smile, which made mother go faster and faster.

By the time we noticed it, we were already back home.

And we left the village gate’s no longer than… Two minutes ago?

It took me a moment to notice what had happened. Looking back to the village, wasn’t it something around five kilometers away from our house? At least I thought so.

I turned back to mother in shock, and saw as she looked back to the city with a face of someone who just did something silly. She turned to me and smiled a bit awkwardly while putting a finger above her lips, as if saying to me to keep quiet.

Seriously, what is my mother?

Well, even if I started having some doubts about it, I never got to find out.

Because when I reached my first full year of life, my mother disappeared.
