So you’ve found yourself with a Mind Quirk, and I’m the one you try it on? Gonna turn it into a book? Make some money off it?
Well, I might as well start explaining then.
My name is Kyudai Miwaku, or my current name is, at least. Kyudai after the philanthropist doctor that owns my orphanage. Miwaku was just the directors personal choice.
We call her Mama Kai
Found myself here, with no memory of my name, or where I was before then. I mean I was quite young at the time but... Long story short, 9 years ago I was brought into this orphanage and given my new name. They think something traumatic happened before I came here, which made it hard to remember my past, that my parents were involved in an accident or simply abandond me.
Apparently, that’s usually how it goes.
Ah, right… Quirks.
Everyone has one.
Well... almost everyone.
Every once in a while, some unlucky kid is born without, you can’t tell yet until they're older, and it might not manifest for years after that. They are such a rarity that just being one could gain you some sort of fame, the type a zoo animal might get. It’s widely accepted that after the age of 7, manifesting a Quirk is an impossibility.
Don’t get me wrong, it is still possible, the same way winning 3 lotteries in a row is possible.
Me? I have not got mine yet, and my 14th is tomorrow.
Why am I telling you all this?
Simple, the walk from home to the local mall is long and boring. The kids are mature enough to stay on track, thanks to their rough upbringing, so not much for me to do really.
It’s a yearly event to take the young ones out to spend 3000¥ on anything the want, sort of the only time they get anything. Funding isn't all that great compared to to amount of kids we take in after all.
Oh, were here.
The kids split into groups to wander around the place, usually long time friends or those with similar interests. They waited, a bit impatient, as I ran through the rules. They probably planned what they were going to buy months ago.
“All right, now you all know the rules, If there are any problems I will be waiting near the center fountain.”
I waited and watched them all run to and fro from whatever shops I could see from the fountain. One of the kids, a young girl, split from her group. She ran off to the bathroom, getting in just fine.
Something started crashing right through the shop walls as she stepped back out into the mall a few minutes later, the explosions getting closer and closer.
I sprinted over most of the way just before the wall next to her flew out.
Time seemed to slow as the ground shook, a rumble turned to roaring as the walls exploded into chunks of reinforced concrete and brick.
All I could recall was a heavy pressure in my head as her small form flew out to collide against mine as I locked my arms, holding her tight before falling back unconscious.

I awoke to being treated by a paramedic with the kids standing not far off, the girl only having a bandage on one arm and nothing else.
“Stay down kid, you over extended your Quirk and collapsed.”
...
Huh...
I have a Quirk apparently, better late than never... I guess?
The next hour or so was spent answering questions and being comforted.
Apparently, some Villain with a momentum-based Quirk ran through the shop walls in a straight line. A new and rising celebrity Hero Kamui Woods fought the Villain, also handing out autographs to everyone regardless of if they asked.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
I gathered the kids and calmed them before we headed back to the orphanage. Everyone else checked the kids, comforting them, and giving them treats for being brave. All available hands were on overtime, as people rushed to and fro, cooking, cleaning, and any other menial tasks that had yet to be redone.
It was for me more than it was the kids honestly. Hearing about my near-death experience on the one TV we have, these things are always widely broadcast, it had them a concerned mess.
Probably because I do a lot of the chores around here.
Once things had calmed down a bit, I sat in my room trying to get my Quirk to work.
It took reaching for the feeling from this morning while staring quite intensely at a baseball to get any reaction, the ball jerking forwards slightly. Getting it to move any amount consistently took right up until a late dinner, after which I took a break before struggling with something bigger.
A full night of rest worked wonders to the headache I’d picked up, yet strangely enough I couldn’t get the ball to move any direction other than towards me. Size or weight, I’m not sure which one, played into the difficulty, while complexity didn’t. Though I had to see what I was targeting.
Thank god I never needed glasses.
As I practised, my mind mulled over the significance of having a good Quirk like this. There were a lot of questions I wanted answered.
Who am I?
Who were my parents?
What the hell happened to them?
All of these would not be easy to answer, especially alone. But with the entire resources of an organisation the size of UA, it shouldn’t be all that difficult.
The image of creating a Pro Hero would also do wonders for the orphanages support.
UA’s Entrance Exam starts in two weeks, and if I use my Quirk right, I might just get in.
The exam always changes, but as long as I show myself being as Heroic as possible it shouldn’t be a problem. My scores from school are more then enough to get in as well, only need to get this Quirk under control.
Over the two weeks I managed to confirm my findings so far, along with discovering a bit more.
Not only was it quite strong at pulling if I pushed past the pain, but also twice as strong while not requiring vision up to 2 meters away from my Quirks center, the belly button.
Apparently it was quite common for Quirks to work from around there.

The UA entrance exam took place on February 26th from 9:30 am to 11:40 am.
It consisted of two parts.
A written exam.
And a practical exam.
The written exam wasn’t too hard, as I had nothing better to do but study for hours some days. Sometimes I would go down to the local library for the day and hand off responsibilities to others...
The practical was really what mattered the most.
There were a little over a thousand Examinees that showed up to UA for the practical exam. Everyone eventually gathered in a UA on campus auditorium, but... well, it was more like a stage.
And when The Voice Hero: Present Mic walked on, it seemed even more so.
“Welcome To Today’s Live Performance!!”
“Everybody Say ‘Hey’!!”
“…”
Every word he says sounds capitalised.
“Well, That’s Cool, My Examinee Listeners!!”
“I’m Here To Present The Guidelines Of Your Practical!! Are You Ready?!
“YEAHH”
“…”
Silence again.
“This Is How The Test Will Go, My Listeners!”
“You’ll Be Experiencing Ten-Minute-Long ‘Mock Cityscape Maneuvers’!!”
“Bring Along Whatever You Want!”
“After This Presentation, You’ll Each Head To Your Assigned Testing Location!!”
“O.K.?!”
“Each Site Is Filled With Three Kinds Of Faux Villains. Points Are Awarded For Defeating Each According To Their Respective Difficulty Levels!!”
“Use Your Quirks To Disable these Faux Villains…
… And Earn Points That’s Your Goal, Listeners!!”
“Of Course, Playing The Antihero And Attacking Other Examinees Is Prohibited!!”
I’ll leave it here; you get the point. There was one more level, but it was more of an obstacle and gave no points. The ending was cool though.
UA High schools Motto.
“PLUS ULTRA!!”
“Break A Leg Everyone!!”

A bus had driven my group to area C, and to what looked like an entire city block. To think that there is 7 of these is insane. We waited out there for a minute or two, but I expected them to try something, so I was ready when it came.
“And… Begin!”
“Run! Run!! The Die Is Cast!!”
As I ran in towards the city center, I made sure to stay behind others. I didn’t exactly have a combat worthy Quirk after all.
That turned out to be the right choice when I saw the ‘weakest’ robot faux villains, armoured metal tank Mechas, twice my height.
Surprisingly, the mechas armour was rather weak, all bark no bite. I guess it made sense as examinees had to actually destroy the things for points. At least that’s what they told us, but I’m convinced they also mark for people saved, y’know, like a Hero would.
A weaker armour meant a lighter armour and so I found it quite possible to pull the walking ones off balance and delay attacks from all types. All in all, as long as I stayed away from the action, i could protect people from the robots, flying robo parts, and themselves quite often.
Unfortunately, Fate, or more likely the examiners, had other plans as a Titan of an opponent showed up out of nowhere.
Seriously, it was way too tall to have been hidden behind the buildings.
It was the 0-point ‘Avoid at all costs’ disaster Giant.

Pre Exam – The Auditorium
“Have You All Played Super Mario Brothers?!”
“It’s Kind Of Like A Thwomp!”
“Only One At Each Site! A ‘Gimmick’ That’ll Rampage Around In Close Quarters!”
----------------------------------------
Thanks to all my delays, I was already farthest from the Behemoth.
It also meant that I could see it clearly, as each movement it made crushed buildings and threw debris into the air.
It advanced forward slowly, crushing any form of resistance in its path.
Ignoring my splitting migraine, I realised that this was the perfect moment to rack up points, as everyone was too busy running away in fear to properly avoid any obstacles. Every pull I made prevented people from getting concussions, bruises, and from tripping during their less than heroic ‘Tactical Retreat’.
Most everyone managed to get away safely.
A sudden explosion and subsequence shock-wave blasted over from the testing area to mine left, ‘B’ I think, putting people of balance due both to the distracting sound and the sounds disruption on the ears balancing.
Luckily everyone managed to get away safely, with the exam concluding shortly after and everyone that needed it being healed up.
Such an intense exam left me exhausted enough that I fell asleep the moment I reached my bed.
It was only days later that I received a letter from UA.
