7. The Adventurers' Guild & First Quest

Alice made her way into the Adventurer’s Guild, when she entered she noticed that a lot of different races walking around. Some were sitting talking to each other. Others were standing by what seemed to be a bulletin board, and others were at the counters talking to the Guild's representatives.

Alice made her way to an available representative behind the counter and said, “Hi, I'd like to become a member of the Guild please.”

“Of course!” said the human lady on the other side of the counter. “Please place your hand on the tablet here so that we can assign you the proper rank.”

Alice, having read about this in the library, placed her hand without asking more questions. The tablet would scan her name, class, level, and race which Alice had no issues sharing.

“Uhh, an Alterterrestial huh, must have ended up here by accident, otherwise we would all know about you by now. Royals tend to make a big deal out of summoning heroes from another world. Sorry about that, you must miss your home world,” said the guild representative with an empathetic look.

“Thanks, yeah I do miss my family and friends, but nothing to do about that at the moment so no point in feeling bad about it,” replied Alice.

“Good for you! Here is your badge. This will give you access to the quest board over there.” The woman pointed to what Alice identified as the bulletin board when she came in. “Feel free to pick up any quest you like. We recommend to only grab quests above your rank if you are in a party. Otherwise stick to your rank if you want to survive,” said the women smiling.

“Thanks, I'll remember that,” said Alice as she walked away and headed to the bulletin board.

“Let's see...” said Alice to herself as she read the quests on the board. Alice found all sorts of quests, from herb gathering, to rat infestations, to bodyguard quests. “I should probably start with something easy just to get the hang of it… Aha! Collect 10 samples of the Gladulus Flower… this one seems simple enough,” said Alice as she started reading the whole quest.

“Quest. Grade F. Collect 10 samples of the Gladulus Flower and bring back to Hanz at the Alchemist shop ‘Brews and Potions by Hanz’. You will find these flowers a few miles north of Ambar City. Reward 20 gold coins,” said Alice with interest in her voice. “Alright this is it. Off we go then.”

With a quest in her hand and ready for adventure, Alice remembered something. “I should probably get a weapon. Can't be going around just kicking stuff.” Luckily for Alice, a weapons store was also in the market square. Alice quickly went into the store. The store had about everything you would imagine: Staffs, sword, shields, spears, you name it, it was there. Some of the weapons even had enchantments on them. You could see swords with a live flame around it, and spears surrounded by lightning. Alice was really impressed with all the variety. She walked right to the back of the store where a dwarf was behind the counter.

“Hello there, young miss, how can I help you today?” said the dwarf.

“Hi, I'm looking for a light weapon please,” replied Alice.

“Light weapon you say? Let me see..." the dwarf said as he looked Alice up and down. "Ahh a Combat Healer, those types of classes are rare. People usually focus on magic or on physical combat but not both. Glad to see you're not like everyone else. This is very exciting indeed,” said the dwarf, excited.

“Yeahh ha ha…” laughed Alice nervously. “Soo.. anything you would recommend?"

“Well any light weapon would suffice, Miss, but if you want my recommendation, well that's different,” said the dwarf as he started climbing some shelves behind the counter. “That puts my reputation on the line, and my reputation is the most valuable thing I have you see. Having said that, this is what I recommend,” said the dwarf as he pulled out a set of sickles from one of the shelves. One black and the other red. “These here are perfect for you, and will go great with that healing magic of yours. They are both enchanted and have unique attacks. The black will leave a necrotic wound which, if not treated immediately, will start to spread and deal a lot of damage. Some creatures are immune to it, but the ones that are not, well let’s just say they will be easy prey for you if you manage to cut them with this. The red one will leave a bleeding effect after an attack. I don't have to tell you just how deadly a bleeding attack is right? Sure monsters can recover quickly from bleeding attacks but land enough of these and they will bleed out so fast that their regeneration won't be able to keep up. Now why am I recommending these to you and not anyone else? Well you see, using these sickles have the slight chance of also inflicting the user with such afflictions. So you can imagine now why only healers are really suited for these sickles as they are the only class that have the spells capable of curing these afflictions. The problem is, most healers don't have a light weapons proficiency. They usually use a staff or have the wand proficiency, and use those as their main weapon. So, what do you say? Interested?” the dwarf finally asked.

Alice thought about it for a second. “On the surface the sickles seem badass. Both have great enchantments and I can see how useful they will be. Regarding the chance of me getting afflicted, well that shouldn't be a problem as long as I keep my MP up. I have two spells that would get rid of those afflictions, and transfusion will even let me pass on those afflictions to enemies.” Alice lifted up her gaze from the sickles and into the dwarf’s eyes and asked, “How much are they?”

“Well given that not a lot of people can use these, I'll sell it to you for 5 gold coins. They've been sitting on my shelves for ages now,” replied the dwarf.

“5 gold for something barely anybody can use? That seems a little high…how about 2 gold 5 silver?” Alice replied.

"You drive a hard bargain, young lady, 4 gold is my final offer. Take it or leave it," said the dwarf with a smile on his face.

"You have yourself a deal, sir," said Alice as she pulled money out of her satchel.
