5. New Wardrobe

On her way to the Adventurer’s Guild, Alice remembered that she needed to stop by the immigration office to update her paperwork now that she had a class of her own. She remembered the guard saying the immigration office was in the market square so she started making her way over there following the various signs posted all around town.

Alice walked a few minutes until she found herself entering the market square. It was a lively area with lots of people of all races walking around. Alice could see all types of stores and street vendors that she could think of. She wasn't a fan of going shopping back on Earth. That was something that both Tim and her had in common. Both did most of their shopping online and only went shopping if it was absolutely necessary. Alice started walking around the square looking for the immigration office when she started noticing a few strange glances coming her way. She then remembered that she was still wearing her hospital scrubs so she quickly made her way to the closest clothes vendor she could find.

She entered the closest store she could find and was greeted by a young woman with long ears at the counter. Alice was not a fantasy enthusiast like her husband but even she would know that the lady at the counter was an elf. Alice approached the young elf and greeted back. “Hi there, I’m looking for some clothes so I can get out of what I’m wearing right now, can you recommend anything?” said Alice, looking at her scrubs.

“Of course!” said the elf cheerfully. “You’ve come to the right place, let’s see now…” The elf looked Alice up and down for a few seconds and finally said, “Combat Healer huh... fancyyy... How did you get an evolved class at just lvl 1, and more importantly: how are you only lvl 1? Most 10-year-olds are around lvl 3 by that time and you seem to be almost in your 20s.''

“Ohh, about that… I come from a small village, and I lived a somewhat secluded life until now. I just leveled to lvl 1 a couple of hours ago actually,” said Alice, a little embarrassed having been compared to a 10-year-old.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

“Ohh I see… well who am I to judge? Live and let live, am I right? Okay, so Combat Healer, I think I have just the thing for you,” replied the elf. She went to the back room and came back a couple of minutes later with what seemed to be a white short dress and a silver cloak made of what seemed to be some sort of thick linen. The elf also brought a pair of brown leather boots. She put everything on the counter and said, “All these would come out to 2 gold. Pretty good bargain if I may say so myself.”

Alice started going through each piece of clothing feeling the quality of the materials and said, “They do feel nice, but 2 gold is a little outside of my budget.” Alice had no idea whether 2 gold was too much for all of this, but she remembered something Tim said “If there’s no price tag, you alwayssss negotiate.”

Turns out Tim was right, because as soon as she finished her thoughts the elf replied, “Well you seem like you desperately need a new wardrobe, so how about 1 gold and 5 silver and I throw in this satchel that matches perfectly with these boots.”

Alice smiled and quickly responded, “You got yourself a deal,” as she started pulling out coins from her pocket.

Alice stepped out of the clothing store with her new white and silver outfit and the satchel that did in fact match perfectly with the brown leather boots she was wearing. She started heading for the immigration office next. It was just a couple of minutes away, but on her way there she started wondering about her conversation with the elf. “So I have an evolved class huh… Did the system take into consideration all of my life experiences on Earth? I mean it makes sense since I got a few skills the same way. Classes must work the same way. I really should find a library.”

Alice entered the immigration office and walked straight to the first counter she saw. “Hi, I was told to come here and update my permit once I got a class?” said Alice.

“Yes ma'am, thank you for coming,” replied the man behind the counter. “Please hand over your permit, and I'll get that fixed for you. Combat Healer, right? Congrats on the evolved class. Those are rare at low levels.”

Alice handed over the permit and said, “Thank you. Yes, Combat Healer. Sorry to bother, but could you point me to the nearest library please?” Alice desperately needed information on how, apparently, everybody was able to see her class and how all of this so-called system worked.

“Here you go, ma'am,” said the man as he returned Alice's permit. “You’re lvl 1, huh… the library is the building next to the Adventurers' Guild. It's probably a good idea to go to the library first if you plan on joining the Guild,” added the man.

“Thank you very much. Really appreciate the advice,” said Alice. She proceeded to leave the immigration office and headed straight to the library.
