1. Am I in a video game?

It was just another day in Alice’s monotonous life. She was currently having breakfast with her husband before heading out to work. Her husband, Tim, made simple scrambled eggs and pancakes shaped like a Death Star. Her husband was a huge fan of all those movies and was an avid gamer. Something Alice was not a fan of. She believed Tim was wasting his time playing video games. Instead he could read a book or learn a new skill. She had mentioned it before, but Tim was a gamer through and through, and there was no changing his mind. It would be easier to convince a fish to come out of the water, than convincing Tim that video games were a waste of time.

Tim usually cooked, since Alice hated cooking, and she wasn't very good at it either. Alice was more of an outdoor girl. She liked to go out on hikes, spend her weekends at the mountains or the beach. When she was little, she tried her hand at as many sports as she could. Soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, you name it and more than likely Alice had tried it. Alice enjoyed pretty much anything that involved being around nature and moving her body.

Tim on the other hand, was the complete opposite. He enjoyed being indoors where he was able to control the temperature to his liking. He preferred video games and board games over hiking and outdoor activities, but somehow they made their relationship work. They had to compromise, and Tim had to compromise more often than Alice, but it didn't bother Tim. They loved and supported each other.

Alice was a 33-year-old 5’4 , 110-pound woman with a small build, but somewhat muscular due to her hobbies. Alice was a doctor and worked at the hospital’s ER room. It was good pay but it came with crazy hours, and the job could be very physically demanding at times.

“Thank you for breakfast, babe, I need to get going if I don’t want to be late to the hospital," said Alice, rushing for the car keys.

“Yeah no worries. Will you be home for dinner?” replied Tim, avoiding Alice's gaze, already knowing the answer.

“Don’t think so, the hospital has been busy lately and I don’t think today will be the exception,” replied Alice. “Oh, do you mind if I take your car today? Mine needs gas and If I stop to fill it up I won’t make it in time,” she added desperately looking for Tim's keys.

Tim just nodded, pointed to where his car keys were, and said goodbye. Alice grabbed Tim's keys and left without answering.

On her way to work, she started thinking about this last interaction with Tim, and how she was always in a rush. She regretted not being able to spend more time with her husband. She regretted not being able to share in his love for games, or all those fantasy movies he always talked about. Tim had always tried to convince her to play video games with him by telling her about the mechanics and the general plot of the games, but Alice was never interested enough to play.

"I'm going to try harder, Tim," she said to herself as she entered the hospital's parking lot.

As she finally pulled into the hospital’s parking lot, she parked the car and closed her eyes. She started to breathe heavily, as a way to forget all her regrets and personal problems to be able to focus on work. Just as she was about to open her eyes, she felt a tingling sensation all across her body. She felt nauseous and started to vomit uncontrollably. Her body ached all over as if a truck had run her over, shifted to reverse and ran over her again. It felt as if she was hit by lightning twice back to back. Surprisingly, she fell on her knees. It was surprising since last she remembered she was sitting down in Tim's car, so how could she have fallen to her knees just now?

Once the pain passed, and she finally opened her eyes, she found herself in an open field surrounded by the greenest grass she had ever seen. She felt the wind run through her face. The smell of grass and trees all around her. The big blue and sunny sky shining down on her. It was beautiful. Alice, for the slightest moment, was taken aback of how beautiful the scene around her was. It was just a moment, since she quickly realized that a second ago she was sitting in a parked car at the hospital's parking lot.

“Uh.. what just happened?” she said to herself, tilting her head quizzically.

She started checking herself for any injuries, only to find herself being perfectly fine, not counting all the vomit that was splattered all across her legs and feet. She was still wearing her hospital scrubs, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary except of course that she was not where she was supposed to be. She started walking around to see if she could find anything that would give her a clue to where she was, when suddenly a voice popped into her head.

Welcome to the world of Sfiraz, adventurer. All previous skills and stats were successfully transferred.

“What? Sfiraz? What do you mean skills and stats? Who is this?” said Alice with a look of puzzlement across her face.

Please open your character sheet for more details.

“Character sheet? Wait... that sounds familiar. Tim had mentioned it a few times. A character sheet is where all the details about his… Noooo... Am I in a video game?” Alice's jaw dropped at the realization.

Alice started shaking, and walking around in circles in disbelief of what was happening. "No no no... this is not real. This can't be happening." She paced for a couple minutes before she stopped.

“Alright, no sense just staying here trying to figure it out. This is surely a dream, and I'm probably passed out on the car right now. I'll wake up in no time. Might as well take.in the beautiful scenery while I wake up. Let's get a move on,” Alice said, bringing her right fist to her left open palm.

Alice walked around for a couple of minutes before remembering something.

“Oh yeah, character sheet, I guess I should take a look at that. Tim will be so excited when I tell him about this dream.”

As Alice thought about opening her character sheet, a virtual translucent window popped up in front of her.
