Chapter 19 : Friends

Chapter 19 : Friends

The next day i finally found something that Vivian was not good at.

Math.

The teacher was a old lady called Mrs Mars. When she entered the class, she gave all of us an assignment to do. When i had saw what we were being taught, i was flabbergasted.

The level of math that were being taught to 13 year olds in Iranda was absolutely horrendous. The stuff that were being taught were what 9 year olds in Holakur learnt.

After we were given our assignments to do, she sat down at the front of the class.

“When you finish your assignment, you can take a break until your next class.” She said.

I breezed through the assignment, finishing it in less than 5 minutes. Since i had nothing to do for the rest of class, i decided to check on Vivian to see how she was doing.

She was atrocious! Almost all of her fractions and multiplications were wrong.

I immediately tried to help her.

“Pss, Vivian your answers are wrong,” I whispered.

“I don’t know how to this, i’m bad at math.” She whispered back as she shrug her shoulders.

“Here let me help you, i’m already done.” I whispered as i got closer to her.

I started to tutor her on everything that she has ever learnt so far. I could very confidently say that i was better at math than the teacher. With my degree in Electrical engineering back in Holakur and how bad the state of technological advancement in Iranda, i was pretty sure i could school Mrs Mars easily.

After helping her for about 40 minutes, i had found out that she could pick up things very easily. She absorbed everything i taught her in a matter of seconds. She could now do the assignment herself very easily. The reason she was so bad at it before was that she could never clarify on any of her problems.

She was too scared to ask the teacher on any questions she may had. After we both handed in our assignments, we both went back to our table and i started to tutor her the stuff she will be learning in the future.

I could see that she was very intuitive and asked me a lot of questions. I answered in such a way that she could easily understand.

When the class was over i told her “In the future, you can always ask me for help, i would be glad to help you.”

“Thank you so much!” Vivian said as she hugged me “Thank you for being my friend.”

“Settle down class” A short plump man entered the class.

The class itself was similar to the magic casting class. However, unlike magic casting class, we were not focusing on how to cast spells. This class taught us how to control and weave mana to better facilitate a spell.

Instead of trying to weave a magic spell in a certain way perfectly, we were trying to control the mana to move. The teacher taught us how to control the mana faster, slower and turn into a certain shape.

We practiced trying to form the mana into different shapes as fast as we could. With my A grade in mana usage and my 17 years of experience, i was only slower than 7 students in my class.

When i peeked at Vivian’s progress, i could see she was as fast as me. The black fiendish mana morphing and turn as it produce a variety of shapes.

After class, Vivian and i ate lunch together again. This time, she was more outspoken and we finally held a conversation that lasted more than 5 minutes. During lunch, she taught me more about enchanting and how i could improve on my runic formations. I was very interested in enchanting as i wanted to enchant my composite silk armour that i would be creating in the future.

I had found out that it was very hard to enchant normal clothings due to how easily they tear apart. Once there is a slight cut or tear in the clothing, the runic formations and the mana circuits would be disrupted. This would cause the whole enchantment to stop working. Thus it was very inefficient to enchant clothing.

After lunch we had warding formation class. In total, me and Vivian had three non compulsory classes together, arding formation class, magical artifact crafting class and enchanting class.

The class was located in the same building as my enchanting class and was taught by Mr Ronic. He was a tall man with messy hair. In this class, he taught us on how to set up a ward.

To make a ward, it was very simple to understand. One would need to find a random object and set an array of runic formations inside it. Different array of runic formations would result in different results. However, these array of runic formations does not last forever. Without power being supplied to them, they will eventually dissipate.

Thus, this is why it is called a ward and not an magical artifact. A ward runic formations is meant to only last a certain amount of time.

Today, Mr Ronic taught us how to make an array for a detection ward. This ward could be placed on any object bigger than the size of our fist. However, the bigger the object and the amount of formations in the array, there further the range of detection.

The array comprised of 4 different runic formations, each runic formations comprising of 30 to 40 lines. Most of the class had already been taught about runic formations from previous lessons, thus they could easily accomplish it after some time. In contrast, i was struggling to even make one runic formation. I had just learnt how to even make runic formations last week.

In the end, i decided to just go into sensory overdrive and copy how the teacher did it. Becaused i copied how the teacher did it, i managed to complete the ward before class was over. However, even if i copied and memorised how he did it. I could not replicate the ward again. Even if i knew how to do it, i still made mistakes due to my unsteady hands. I did not have the muscle memory to accomplish it.

I had to get Vivian teach me how to do it before i was capable of finishing three of the runic formations before the class ended. After i made my ward, i had immediately destroyed it to get rid of the evidence.

After class we had magic artifact crafting class taught by Mr Tink, he was wearing spectacles and a lab coat. The place it was held was in the build to the right of us.

When me and Vivan sat down in the workshop waiting for the other classmates and the teacher., i realised that i had a problem. Ciri was also taking this class.

This means that i have to get Ciri and Vivian to become friends. I had completely forgotten about this.

Becaused i was so focused on making the blueprints yesterday nights, i had completely forgot to plan on how i was going to get Ciri to like Vivian.

Due to the rumors about Vivian and her terrifying powers, almost everyone in the academy is afraid of her.

Fuck, looks like i just have to wing it.

“Ari!!” Ciri screamed as she ran towards me to hug me when she entered the workshop.

However, just as she was about to hug me, she saw who was sitting beside me.

“Ari, why are you sitting beside... her…” Ciri asked in concern as she hinted at Vivian with her eyes.

“I think i should leave,” Vivian said as she tried to leave.

“No, you’ll stay,” I said as i got hold or her arm and held her down, prevent her from leaving.

“Ciri, this is my friend, Vivian, say hello,” I said as i hugged Vivian arm.

“But.. but..but..” Ciri tried to argue.

“I really think i should leave” Vivian said as she struggled to get out of my grip.

“Both of you are going nowhere,” I said to both of them “Ciri, trust me, Vivian is my friend and she is not like what the rumors says she’s like.”

“But.. but..but..” Ciri tried to argue with sweat pouring down her cheek. She had the look of horror.

“No buts!” I screamed “I want all three of us to be friends.”

“Do you trust me Ciri?” I asked.

Ciri eyes dart around in confusion before look down and saying “ yes, i trust you.”

“Then good, can you try being friends for me”? I asked.

“Yes,”Ciri said in resignation.

“Hi, i’m Ciri, nice to me you.” Ciri introduced herself to Vivian.

“Hello, nice to meet you too, i’m Vivian.” Vivian introduced herself to Ciri.

“Yay, good!” I cheered “Now we can all be friends.”

During class both were very quiet. Both didn’t or had the confidence to talk at all.

They both need to warm up to each other. I can’t force them to be friends.

They will both need time.

The magic artifact crafting class was very interesting. Mr Tink was a quirky man. He would ramble on and on about how his inventions would one day revolutionise Iranda. He had brought some of his new inventions to show us. When he pulled them out, i heard the class mumbling ‘ Not again’.

It was a total failure. It just blew up in his face.

“ Does this happen often?” I asked.

“ Yeah” Both Ciri and Vivian sighed.

“ Mr tink, can we just start the lesson? ” One of the students asked.

“ You guys just don’t understand the potential that my inventions has, nevermind, one day you will see my inventions change the future of Iranda, just you see.” Mr Tink said before starting the class.

“ Don’t mind him, he does this very often,” Ciri whispered to me.

Magic Artifacts was one of the classes i needed to pay a lot of attention to. For the crafting guild, crafting magic artifacts is one of my tickets to get in. Magic artifacts were a loot similar to technology except for the fact that it gathers power from a mana crystal. Like warding, it has an array of runic formations inside the object, however unlike wards, it lasts a very long time. As long as the mana crystal is not destroyed or damaged, it would work.

To make a magic artifact, the basic idea is to set an array of runic formations with mana circuits linking the mana crystals and the object. However, when making a magic artifact, one has to pay attention to the object. Different shapes and types of material would require different arrays of runic formations and different sizes of mana crystals.

A rarer material like mithril and adamantium were often used for making magic artifacts due to the fact that it can store a larger array of runic formations. This means that it would be stronger and better than other magic artifacts that uses normal materials.

This lesson we were taught how to make a lamp. It consisted of an array with 5 runic formations each with 40 lines. It was a truly hard for me to even make 1 runic formation, but now i had to make 5.

I had to get Ciri and Vivian help in making the runic formations. I could not use sensory overdrive and copy how Mr Tink did it, it was too much of a risk. As much as i wanted to take a shortcut and use it, I steeled myself from using it. If people found out that a person could complete a runic formation with 40 lines easily in just a week of learning, it would be too troublesome.

That blind old man who my father was friends with could help me vouch for my combat skills but i don’t think he will be able to explain about how i am not only a combat genius but also an formation genius. That would be too suspicious and conspicuous. Thus i had to not use this ability.

In the end i managed to complete 4 runic formations with the help of Ciri and Vivian. I had also found out how good Ciri was at it. If i consider Vivian fast, Ciri was even faster. She took just half an hour to complete all the runic formations and make the array and another half to complete the lamp. It really was great seeing Ciri and Vivian work together to help me.
