The next day was Monday so it was time for a trip to Vancouver. We all went to the flight deck to see the equipment as it loaded. 2 giant hoppers with cables leading to the replicator that produces the raw material. "How many drones are you using there?" Vickey looked at me "I went with 20 to speed up the process. Each can do a ton at a time and they can work together as well if they encounter challenges".
With that she finished loading and I went to my office. I took a small shuttle and followed them down. Flight time was only fifteen minutes and the weather was clear. I saw a crowd of people so I landed beside them. The instant the door opened the press started.
The press wanted an interview "I'm sorry but I have to decline, I have work to do". I made my way to the mayor. "Good morning sir I see the rain held off today for us". He smiled and shook my hand "where is the equipment?" I waved my hand and decloaked the equipment that was hovering above us. "Where would you like to set up". An engineer stepped up. "Over on the flat area there" he pointed "we can build a ramp for the trucks to dump directly into the hopper". I smiled "no need sir the ramp can be built by the drones. Let's go for a walk and you can show me exactly where to place it". He smiled and we did just that.
We walked to the spot and I lowered it into place exactly where he wanted it. "How are you controlling them?". I'm linked to the tech, they basically obey my commands". He had a weird look on his face as he watched the equipment settle into place. "Where is the dirt to build the ramp out of". He pointed at the pile so I took all 20 drones and started grabbing dirt.
Each drone would grab a ball of dirt then drop it in place. They then slammed into the ground using their shields to compact the dirt. It took about 15 min for it to take shape and we all inspected the work. "This is amazing, I don't know what to say" said the mayor "this is just the way of the future, you're just getting a sneak peek of what's to come for all".
All the cameras were rolling watching the activities and the ramp grow until it finished. Then they swung around to catch the first garbage balls floating to the hopper. I looked at the mayor "it's now ready for the trucks to start dumping". He told someone and within minutes the first truck was there.
The mayor started laughing "this would have taken months worth of paperwork to get things this big into place. All you have to do is think about it". I smiled at him "this is what I've been chosen for".
He seems ok with that answer and we made our way to the replication unit. There was a block of black looking obsidian sitting on the unit.
I picked it up and handed it to the mayor, it was a 20 cm by 20 cm cube. "The first one should go to you but be careful it weighs about 17 kilograms". He hefted the weight and his eyes got wide "how does it weigh that much". I smiled "that's how I store material for later use I call it feedstock. This is the part you want". I put my hand into a bag that was currently being filled with pellets". These are pellets for plastic manufacturers to use, you can change the type from the control panel over there. This can be sold and it's yours to sell, I have no need for it".

Once again he was smiling so hard I thought his skin would split.
One of the drone's grabbed the next cube and took it to a storage container about the size of a minivan. "The whole system is automated and requires no intervention from this point on except the drones need to know where to put the bags of pellets" That got some applause.
The mayor took advantage of the opportunity for the photo op so I gave in. "I don't know what to say but thank you. I do have one question, why Vancouver?" I smiled "I'm going to use Vancouver as a test city to show the rest of the world what I'm bringing. This is the beginning of hopefully a beneficial arrangement. I do have a request though, have your accounts work out how much you will be saving and how much you would pay for equipment like this. I'm not charging you but I will be charging others and you can help me set prices". Another huge smile "Consider it done captain, why are you not giving them away?"
"This tech could be used for bad as well as good so I retain control to make sure it can't happen". That got head nodds "I'm working out ways to bring it to people and not put them out of work" More nodds.
One of the press had a good question "are you going to bring this to all cities?" I looked at her and smiled "that's my goal, how is this for a headline Landfills Are Doomed".
We all laughed at that.
"What other technology do you have and will be bringing to the people?"
"We'll waste disposal, clean power production, medical care, transportation and I'm starting on space tourism".
"It sounds like you can provide everything," I smiled. "I can". That got a lot of shocked looks. "This is the beginning of a new way of life for everyone and it's my goal to make sure everyone has access, not just the higher ups". That drew applause and I smiled.
For the next 30 min I answered questions and Vicky was doing the same. I let them know when they breached a topic I wasn't ready to discuss yet. They seemed ok with the fact that it will come out soon and they will get their answers.
Vicky was explaining the process in detail for a crew and she finished by letting a female reporter walk through her. We ended the interviews and boarded the shuttle to go home.
I disconnected from the VR and got 2 kisses and a hug from Carla. "That was a productive day" I said and looked around.
Just then the kits walked in to get the latest news. We talked for a while until Vickey appeared.
"You're on every channel" she brought up 10 different channels and sure enough we were on all of them. We saw the woman who walked through Vickey a few times as well as the mayor struggling with the cube. There was lots of footage of the dump slowly disappearing and we watched for a while seeing people talk about the changes to come.
Everyone in the room made fun of me for being so stiff in front of the camera. I giggled "I'm not the PR guy". Vicky laughed "oh we know that". The news shows we're becoming redundant so we shut them off.
We were chatting when B appeared "the satellites are ready and I added the weapons the kits are using in case they encounter junk. They can be used defensively if someone gets the wrong idea". He brought up a hologram and showed me. It was square with crystals poking out on 3 sides. "The crystals work as dishes but are way more sensitive. If I launch tomorrow morning it will be operational by noon.
I could tell B was proud and I wanted to give him one more "what is the name of the network?" He put a questioning look on his face. "You built it, you get to name it". He smiled "I wasn't thinking of a name I just called it the network". I smiled "sleep in it and see what you can come up with. He nodded and dissolved. I looked at my crew "I'm done for the day". And with that we went to bed.
