Once George and Grim got out of the dungeon, they were met with an angry and worried Catherine screaming at them.
"Where the hell were you?!" She screamed right at his face. "It's been hours!"
George took a good look at the sky and saw that it was already sunset. George was shocked, he didn't know that he was in there for hours.
"I was inside for that long? Must've been good sleep." George said, muttering the last part.
"Duh! That's why Grim went inside!" Catherine replied. "I was worried that you died!"
"Oh, uh, sorry for not leaving hours earlier." George said, scratching the back of his head.
"Well, sorry ain't enough and that's why for the rest of the time we have left today, you'll be running back home." Catherine said firmly. "And for tomorrow and the rest of the days, you'll be learning something else."
George was confused about the last part. There was something else for him to learn that wasn't sword training or the normal ones. George thought of the things that he would be learning but he was stopped by Catherine shouting at him to run.
"H-how far is the city again?" George asked.
"10 kilometers or more." Catherine said, going back to the front of the wagon and preparing to leave. Grim went to the back of the wagon, legs hanging off of the wagon.
"Don't worry, we'll still be here." Catherine assured George. "We're just gonna be faster than you though."
With that, the wagon ran back to the city. George widened his eyes as he saw it leave and quickly followed it. George ran as fast as he could to keep up with the wagon but the horses were faster.
And just like that, Catherine and Grim were already far away. George was left alone as the sun had finally set and the moon finally appeared.
----------------------------------------
"That...I never want to do that again..." George said, panting and sweating as he lay on the floor of their room. Grim was with him in the room, on the bed with Monty.
After George arrived at the gate, he was sweating like hell. The guards were confused but let him inside the city. Catherine was impressed since Grim and she only arrived twenty minutes before George did. George felt too tired to receive the compliment. Soon, they parted ways again.
On the way, George went and bought some food to quench his thirst and hunger. He even asked Grim to use magic to get rid of the sweat but Grim rejected it saying it was just a waste of time and magic.
"Well...goodnight." George said before resting. He then proceeded to think of what he was going to endure tomorrow. He then reminisced about the events that happened today. The people he met inside the dungeon.
They were...a peculiar bunch to say the least. Despite their intimidating looks, they were quite friendly. George then remembered that one of them recognized Grim. He thought of it for a second before shooting down any more ideas about it. He soon came to worry about what he was going to do tomorrow. Catherine told him that he was going to learn something new.
But what was it? Were there any other things he needed to know?
He will find out tomorrow, for now, he needed a rest from all of it.
----------------------------------------
For the next day, George and the two were back in the same forest where he was trained how to sword fight. He wondered, will he be learning a new weapon to use?
That was his thoughts as soon as he saw the familiar tree line. He mastered the sword there.
"Speaking of the sword, where's my sword?" George asked as he looked everywhere before stopping. Catherine looked at his body and saw no sword attached to him.
"I'll buy you a new one." Catherine said as she went and got something from the wagon.
"Why?" George asked.
"I have money to burn. Being a guard pays well you know." Catherine then held an old dusty and large book from the wagon. She opened one of the pages and immediately closed it. She then set it back to the wagon and readied up.
Stolen story; please report.
"Okay, today, you are going to learn magic." Catherine said. But instead of excitement, her words and face were filled with disgust and hate. George was more different than her as his eyes lit up in excitement.
'MAGIC!? OH MY FUCKING GOD.'
"Okay, so today, the magic I will teach you is simple." Catherine said.
'MAGIC!? SHE SAID IT AGAIN! OH MY FUCKING GOD.'
"This type of magic is for warriors, so keep in mind that this is only effective in fights."
'SHE KEEPS SAYING MAGIC! OH MY FUCKING GOD SHE IS GOING TO TEACH ME MAGIC!'
"So, here's how the spell goes-"
"Oh my god, she's teaching me a spell!" George shouted in excitement. Catherine just looked at her in surprise and disdain. George saw this and quickly asked. "What's wrong?"
"For an old man, you are very excited about learning magic..." Catherine muttered.
"Well, I always wanted to do magic so..." George explained to her.
"Why didn't you go to an academy or something..." Catherine asked before widening her eyes in realization. "Oh wait, I needed to give you the orb first!"
"What orb?" George asked, confused.
"A Mythan Orb is...uh..." Catherine had a hard time explaining it to him. Luckily, Grim was there.
"A Mythan orb can look into your body to search for mana in your body. If it's above zero then you can use magic. The higher the number, the higher the mana and magic you can use without feeling your body giving in. If it's zero then you can't use magic." Grim, laying down on the wagon, explained bluntly.
"Ah, so it determines whether you are capable to use magic or not." George stated.
"Yes." Grim replied nonchalantly.
"So, where is this orb thing?" George asked, not seeing any spherical-shaped object in the wagon.
"Well, good thing you don't need it since only a few percentages of people can't use magic." Catherine said. "Plus, if you have a low mana in your body, it's okay since Warrior magic can still be used."
That was a problem since George wasn't from around here. He's from another world where magic isn't common. So, it was a 10-90 percent chance he doesn't have mana in his body. But he was going to try anyway.
----------------------------------------
"First thing you need to do is to focus your mind." Catherine shouted, circling George who was sitting on the ground, eyes closed and all. "If there's too much going on inside your head then your desired outcome won't come to fruition. Then after completing your focus, you must will it into existence using your willpower! Without one of the two, then you can not achieve to use magic at all!"
"Your shouts aren't helping again." George said, trying his damned hardest to focus.
"So, drown it out! Do not let my voice distract your mind!" Catherine shouted angrily. George did so. Yet, even doing his hardest to drown it out, there were more voices. He had the willpower to do so, but his focus was not.
Catherine became silent, looking at George's arms to see if anything happened at all.
Nothing happened at all.
She sighed with frustration.
"Do it better! Focus harder!" Catherine shouted again. This time, she was met with an answer.
"I'm trying!" George shouted back. George, frustrated too, opened his eyes and sighed. "Nothing happened, eh?"
Catherine shook her head silently. George shouted in frustration.
This was his eightieth attempt at doing magic and he still couldn't do it.
"Also, can you stop telling me what to do with every attempt I try?" George asked.
"Nope." Catherine said with confidence.
The sun was almost setting, the skies were getting darker, and Grim was still asleep. They had tried all day and still, nothing happened. George proceeded to stand up, not wanting to attempt anymore.
"Look, can I just not use any magic?" George asked.
"And what? Get yourself killed? Against fighters experienced with magic, who do you think is going to win? You? Fuck no." Catherine responded. "They've been training for many months! And you've only been training for what? A few weeks! Magic can help you out. But, I don't think it's possible. Maybe...maybe you're...one of the ones who can't..."
"Maybe." George said sadly before walking into the woods. "I just need to rest for a bit, I'll be back."
Catherine nodded her head slightly before George left. Catherine sighed sadly, looking down at the ground.
"Maybe he is just like me." Catherine muttered to herself.
----------------------------------------
George walked through the forest, trying to find peace of mind. He was still frustrated by his attempts. Nothing worked. No magic happened when he was trying his hardest.
In his walk, he stumbled upon a lake where the sun was perfectly seen setting just behind it. He looked at the lake. The ripples it made when something fell in. The calmness of the water soothed him. It was a beautiful sight for him.
He decided to sit down near the edge. He looked at it with amazement through the blank face he had on. It reminded him of something that was long forgotten. It reminded him of important people he had in life. It reminded him of many things.
Joy, sadness, suffering.
"What the hell am I doing in life." He said to himself as he recalled his past life in his world. All the struggles he had. All the suffering he had to endure. His work was killing him slowly.
It was a painful memory to revisit.
"Why can't we just get along?" He asked himself, there was about a moment of silence before he talked to himself again. "I'll do it again."
He closed his eyes. With willpower, he thought of what he wanted to do, and that was to make his arms shine. With his focus, he thought of nothing else but that, drowning out the noises from afar and focused.
It was silent, no loud noises erupted, no nothing. George decided to open his eyes but keep focusing. When he did, he saw his arms.
They were shining like a light bulb. George smiled proudly. He did his first spell, the Lux spell, a spell to lighten up a part of the body to serve as a light source when there wasn't one. It was a spell used by adventurers.
"Well, that was anti-climatic."
