Chapter 22

[A Certain General of the Marquis]

Their walls…

“They line it with some sort of weapon…”

“Is it catapults perhaps?”

“Probably but I wonder what that black metal tube is?”

We passed through the first wall and we started to move on the empty fields they had. There a sort of temporary holding camp was established.

They began sorting us one by one given colored ribbons that were fastened on our arms.

Immediately those that had severe injuries were given red, others were given yellow and the rest were given green.

Sorting the wounded… I guess the red ones are as good as dead…

“Healing Unit 1 - 10 handle the red bands!”

“Where the hell is the mage unit? Medics do first aid on the yellow bands!”

“It’s too cold, get the mage unit here immediately!”

“The Engineering Department is currently making emergency shelters. We will need 2 hours.”

“Are you an idiot? I said red and yellow first, the guards will take care of the greens!”

“Calm down Miss Amari, that one just joined the first aid unit a month ago, this was their first job.”

“We don’t get second tries when it comes to people’s lives.”

It took a few days but little by little the number of people bearing red and yellow bands got lower. Healers and doctors primarily belonged to the temple and nobles, but for a city to use them here to heal their enemies…

Those who no longer had any life-threatening injuries or were suffering from extreme starvation were immediately transferred to what they call the Prison Complex. We were put inside wagons that were covered all over. While injured ones were sent using boats in their canals. This happened indiscriminately disregarding anyone’s rank or peerage everyone was treated equally.

I thought we’d be sent to a dungeon and left rotting there but no… we received a noble’s welcome… we were given some sort of medallion that was placed around our wrist, there it had our name and a number. It was made out of something that I had never seen before.

We received food 3 times a day and had access to bathhouses. After a few days, some families came by and took their loved ones from the prison complex, I couldn’t help but feel jealous of them. Though… this place… was still alright…

“You’re a commander, right? General Richard?”

A soldier asked me.

“Yes…”

“The Prince has summoned all the commanders to the inner palace. Please comply.”

Ah, I’m going to get killed huh… My daughters… I wish I could’ve spent more time with you.

We were escorted to a carriage. There I saw 4 of my peers, they too had the rank of general. Behind us some of the commanders of minor units were escorted too. Then we saw him get out being dragged by soldiers…

It has been a while since we last saw him, many thought he was killed during the mutiny but there he was screaming as soldiers dragged him towards the carriage.

“So this is it huh… If only we could use magic inside the prison complex… we could have escaped…”

“At Least they allowed us to enjoy our last days… even in the carriage we can’t use magic… maybe it’s these medallions…”

“If only we didn’t suffer from a lack of provisions…”

“We should’ve attacked in Spring!”

We saw the young lord with tears in his eyes screaming on the carriage in front of us. His hands were tied by metal chains.

“You can’t do this to me!”

We all heard before the carriages started to move. As the gates to the prison complex opened we saw the scale of the place we were held in.

“Impossible…”

I have seen the royal castle once… that was incomparable to this… the castle was taller but the complex occupied more space than that. Inside we could only see a part of it but it seems like the complex was divided into three different sections… so they separated us...

“We were only seeing a third of it.”

We continued to be in awe of this city. We passed by the bustling commercial district, we saw people trading and enjoying their life like they weren’t just about to be attacked…

“If we just had those. Food… this would not have happened.”

We saw food being traded by the residents, the aroma of food entering our noses and whetting our appetites.

We suddenly stopped as one of the guards approached us. He gave us food and told us there would be a waiting time until we could enter the inner walls.

“Is this parchment?”

“No… it’s too thin and easily torn.”

“It’s delicious!”

“It's the best thing I’ve ever tasted.”

They gave us meat between two pieces of bread with some vegetables between them WAKKODONALD was written on the paper. It was the best thing I’ve ever tasted. I wish we could have experienced this longer…
