Chapter 17 – Off to a good start

Chapter 17 – Off to a good start

Stepping through the portal Nick and Bear found themselves in the same room stone room that Nick was in at first. The difference from last time being that they stepped out the stone gate.

And that the wall in front of them was showing the whole world, with all its cities.

"Cool so what am I supposed to do jump out and pray that I land somewhere on it?" Nick looked to Bear, searching for some advice. Which she did by motioning for him to try. Which he did.

"Motherfucker!" He said as he hit his nose against the stone wall. But he clicked on one of the places in the process.

It opened a portal to that location. He tried changing it, but it didn't budge a bit and just waited for him to get in.

"You see what you have done. We could have had it easy and transported into the Star Reaver City directly now we have to walk there about a hundred kilometres." He started scratching his head in frustration as Best looked at him with an amused expression.

"You won't have any bones for the next week. And no puppy eyes, it won't work."

"Let's get going." He said ignoring her begging cries behind him as he stepped into the portal.

In the wilderness a military car was parked near one of the trees while next to it was lit a campfire. Two tents were laid around while a couple of soldiers was sitting around the fire. They were boiling water to mix with the rations they had.

"Mark, you ever thought about switching your job to a farmer or something?"

"No, because I only wish to reach squad leader rank and then switch over to some barracks or something. You know I'll be safe and my family will have better living on the agricultural planet."

"That's only going to happen if you manage to live that long. Better to be alive with family than dead."

"You still can switch your job. And stop fucking up the morale, Jean." The squad leader called out as he came from one of the tents. He was from the Star Reaver race.

They were, but a group of new soldiers. That managed to escape from the Human City.

"But It's the truth. I..."

Just then a portal opened on top of their campfire. A foot stepped out from there right into the pot of boiling water.

"What are you having comrades?" Nick said as he stepped forward, splashing boiling water at them while doing so. They started screaming having their bodies splashed.

"No please don't overreact. It must not hurt that much. I still have some of it on me." Nick inspected his body, seeing some charred spots on him that were healing, but chose to ignore them.

Next to him jumped Bear startling the already uneasy soldiers.

"Who are you?"

Before he could say anything, he found a Chaos energy being transmitted to the soldiers. He intercepted some of it to see what it was about.

[Chaos Lord

Bronze Epic

Weakness: specific to each one

Birthed by Chaos and made to serve it for eternity.

No further information known.]

[Great Grey Wolf

Bronze Uncommon

Weakness: Fire

Spells that slow it down are encouraged to be used.

Evolved version of the grey wolf with higher attributes, but possessing the same weakness as it's weaker version.]

Seeing what it was being transmitted Nick could not help, but smile and intercept some of it. He enveloped the trapped Chaos energy and transported it into his body.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

[Hi there Telno. How have you been my favourite?] Nick said through trying to communicate with the Chaos energy.

After a bit off waiting the response came. Meanwhile the soldiers prepared their guns aiming at the both of them.

[I've been doing fine. That could not be said about you. Now could it. Rugged makeshift clothes, more weapons on you that are covering you than the cloth itself.]

[Yeah, it was rough. But now I'm here. So, what's next. Do I get a welcome party?]

[Oh, yes you do.] She giggled a bit. After she said so the soldiers seemed to be uneasy about what she was talking to them about. But they let down their weapons all the same. [It would be quite a good idea to let you meet your old friends.]

[That's what I had in mind. So, lead the way.] Nick said as he was starting to walk away.

[If you don't mind why not let the soldiers accompany you on your way. After all they have a vehicle, it'll be faster.]

[Oh, you're right.]

He watched as other Chaos energy was being transmitted in, Telno communicating with them. But he also saw some of the soldier's Chaos energy along with some mana leaving them. He ignored that for now, trying to get into a somewhat familiar environment.

"It seems that I'll be in your care for now."

"Yeah, the pleasure is ours. By the way do you want any food on the way." The squad leader said while still holding his rifle.

"No, I think I'm good. Instead, we should get going. I was away for a long time. Would be nice if we got to the city before it's sunrise."

"Oh, don't worry we'll just finish packing up our stuff and we'll be on the way."

They packed their things into the back of the car. Splashing water into the fireplace at last and they were on their way.

The seating in the car was quite a sight to behold as Nick managed to place Bear in the back of the car, her head sticking out the window.

Meanwhile Nick sat beside Mark and Jean in the back. In the front was only the squad leader Victor looking at the road and sometimes glancing into the rear window.

"So, what have you been up to since I was gone?"

"Nothing much. We were just clearing the monsters beside the highway. The usual." Mark said as he was tapping his foot on the ground. Even though a quiet tune from the radio was playing, he followed no rhythm.

"What highway? The last thing I know was we were escaping from the city."

"Well, things are developing. The orders from the top came to make a path to them so we do. Nothing we can do if we only find their corpses and ruins." Jean added, snickering.

"Maybe there will be some survivors. You never know." Nick said with a smile, trying to brighten up the atmosphere. Yet it proved to only make Mark stop tapping his foot.

Just then they set tires on the before mentioned highway. They drove on the right side while some vehicles drove around them.

They didn't seem to want to communicate any more than this as they did their things. They seemed to be cleaning and preparing their weapons. Seeing that he returned his sight to the energies that were constantly leaving their bodies.

[Telno do you know why their mana and Chaos energy is leaving them?] He asked, but got no answer. Getting uneasy he grabbed Jean's arm, making sure his assumptions are correct.

"What the hell are you doing man?" Jean called out. Reacting swiftly Mark placed his gun against Nick's head, but not before he felt a deep breathing of Bear on his neck. She was now taking most of the space in the back, nearly being in the front.

"Just checking something. No need to be so jumpy about it man. It's not like I was about to do anything malicious." Nick said with a grave face and waved his hands in the air, signalling he was friendly. But even then, the tension in the air stayed along with the gun.

Meanwhile a group of armoured vehicles managed to gather around their car, encircling it.

"What's your problem? Man, I haven't done anything?"

"Stop pretending. You're no human, you fiend. Taking someone's body desecrating their corpse, just to sneak into the city." Jean said as he reached out for the gun that was dropped on the floor. But he wasn't quick enough as Nick lunged at him. He spun him around while getting him into a chokehold. As he did so a sound of gunfire was heard, followed by crunching of bones and screaming. Mark made a poor choice that cost him a bite in the arm, meanwhile the bullet only grazed Nick and made a hole through the window.

"Listen to me. I'm no Chaos Lord or anything. I just killed one and came into possession of its crown." Thinking about the crown he tried removing it, but found out he couldn't.

"Then Jean, go. And prove it, you aren't one." Victor said from the front. Hearing that Nick let go somewhat off his grip, but didn't let go completely.

"I have no good way of proving it. Look if I wanted to kill you. You'll be dead next to the campfire and I'd just take the car. It'd save me trouble."

"That should reassure us?" Jean said as he was regaining his breath.

Victor didn't take it that well as he wasn't paying attention to the road and swerved to the side.

They went off the road and hit a tree, totalling the car. Nick seeing the situation be dire got out the car while dragging the others out too. Bear just sat around the car, looking at the arriving cars that encircled them.

"Leave them be and surrender." A voice came out of a megaphone on one of the cars. While soldiers swarmed the area, weapons drawn and ready to shoot at given order. Meanwhile some mounted the light machine guns.

"But I didn't do anything."

"Then explain why one of the soldiers has his arm torn apart?"

Nick looked behind, looking at Bear. He couldn't just say she did it, that would seem stupid.

"It was an accident, nothing more. why don't we resolve this peacefully?"

"If you want to stop joking. Then drop all your weapons and turn around. Keep your hands where I can see them. For your pet let it lay on the ground."

Nick stood where he was trying to contact Telno and ask her what all this was about. Finally, it came through.

[Simply put Nick. You've become a variable that endangers the protection of the lifeforms. But rest assured that you'll be taken care of to the best of our abilities. After all you still are one of the protected lifeforms.]

The shouting of the commander and the speaking of Telno faded away as Nick looked at the situation before him. Encircled and about to be shot at moment’s notice. He laid down his weapons kicking, a rope of daggers and a sword.

Dropping to his knees he felt handcuffs closing on his arms. Meanwhile Bear received the same treatment.

Taking them into the car and they were off.
