“We were situated in a store of dereliction, least as I thought, though Jenny had been felled to his sleep yet I was not to be provided a satisfactory of deep sleep, in which I was deserted by my unfortunate presence, the reflection of his blood could not desert me even in my dreams. Sir, when you are in London then do not forget to experience the River Thames, as they say, you can feel the sudden power of spirits, a lot have dedicated to ending their life in the river, And the store that we were in, it was prospered with the cold and gorgeous breeze of the river, sir I must not hesitate myself to say the story now. An hour elapsed and my mind was confined well with the thoughts of that old lady’s words, the words that may foil the massive trouble for me, sir I must ascertain my vilest sinful thoughts, yes I was to think a way of having some farthings with myself and yes I was thinking of working as a whore just for once, and this idea was advised when I spotted those women, so relaxed and so composed within themselves as they waited for some men, perhaps for one time I may manage to have done that if it guarantees me such money but then my thoughts got interrupted by a sudden presence of a man in the store, the proprietor of the store, it gave me a seldom of a shock to have him in a same room as myself, the omission cast that poured onto me was as same as when we were supposed to live with Uncle. The man had a foreign face and his eyes blaring with the saddened times, his slow rusty hands reeked the door fully open. Yes, sir, we were very well hidden from the sight of him though now Jenny had woken up by the course of his wild actions. I quickly held his mouth to ensure that he did not make a single sound while the man was procured with such anger and it reflected upon his movements, perhaps he had no intention to be drunk to a state of despair in a circumstance of celebrating the birth of The King’s child. I was shaken to my bones, for what may he hold any harm for us? The obvious conclusions of his preposterous actions were quite easy to dare anyone, and with the trauma that Jenny was quite detained to live, it was painful to see him tremble with such fear, while his lips could not budge even a bit, yes sir, this time though I was quite relaxed to see that. The shop had no intention to be in shape to have a business and I understood it quite perfectly when he dispersed himself in a search for something as this shop was intended to work as a store-room for his needs. The time passed and he never walked within a distance that could mean any deceit to our safety, yet when he was to walk out, he turned on us and sat down on a chair.
“Come out, I can see you,” his foreign accent had given me an impression of himself, and that is to say that he was no Englishman, and there was a delicacy in his words, though my heart skipped me for a moment as he announced that. Now I asked Jenny to stay still while I slowly rose out of my position.
“Please sir, we do not mean any harm to you,” I stood still while my eyes were raging with my fear.
“We? Is there anyone else with you?”
My stupidity had given away Jenny as well, I stood still as there were no words for me to bestow.
“Tell me honestly or I will not hesitate to shoot you,” his anger suddenly creaked as he picked a gun from his pocket.
“Yes--- Yes sir, I have my brother,”
“Show me!”
Jenny stood up, consenting to his infamy request. The man kept his leering to Jenny, his toiled hands left the gun down, and a smile formed on his cheeks.
“Please mister, bear us and we will not disturb you any longer,” Jenny's lips trembled as he broke the sentence to him. The man picked up the bottle of wine and began to gulp it while his eyes continued to survey us closely, and then he slowly put down the bottle.
“Ah come out, I will not do any such harm to a kid,”
We remained within a distance from him, sir I could only dare to condemn his orders, oh for sure I had lost any courage to have trust in any person.
“Should I allow myself to repeat?! Come out now at once for Christ's sake!”
“Please if you may then remove the gun, My brother is so scared,” I said with sheer care to not torture his patience and with restraint to my words to not give him a bad impression that may torment us both.
“Oh for god’s sake, do I look like a person that could find any reason to shoot a child? A god damn child?!”
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
“No—No sir, you are not,” I said.
“Well then show yourself in front of me,”
I stopped for a moment and slowly but steadily I began to cross the table while my fear had no such intention to bear me. When I crossed the table Jenny held my hand as if he was destined to escape me from my troubled fate.
“It is fine Jenny, come on out,” I extended my hand to him. Jenny steadily came out as his eyes craved only and only a freedom to render all round us.
“Sit down,” he ordered. We sat down on the floor, but the circumstances under which we were required to be infallible, at least that’s what I thought at the time.
“Sir we do not want any such trouble for you or for us, Let us go and we will not dare to step foot in here,” I sought the answer of kindness, though with no words to prostrate, he rose and walked to one of his cabinets.
“Are you young lads hungry?” He reposed.
‘Uh no sir, we only need to go and go away pretty far ----”
My eyes were shining with pleasure when I spotted a nice big cooked bread in his hands, with a bottle of whiskey that he had so obsessed with offering to me, I looked at Jenny and I could only see the hesitation in him to reject such incredulity offer as his pining eyes were locked onto the bread. Now sir, if you may venture to wonder how I got the satisfactory taste of a brandy then I must tell you that when we were settled at Uncle’s house there at first he requested my consent to offer me a shot of brandy though at the earliest I had my hesitation but then I became accustomed to that. Now sir, allow me to return to the topic. I did not remember how many days we had spent with no proper meal for ourselves, and when he showed us what he had stored, our urge had got us both good. I stopped my lips and my intellect had deserted me, my unaided exertion failed me so severely that I had no words to reject his offer.
“I suppose I do have a lot stored in my cabinet, though I may never be able to finish it by myself, I am afraid I need some assistance in it,” he looked at Jenny with a smile on his face as if he had known him for so long, the great infirmity of Jenny did not oppose to smile back and rose before anything.
“We may help you with that, right? Evelyn?”
“Oh Evelyn will assist us for sure, you young lad, come with me.” he addressed Jenny once again and had him follow his words to the outer side of the store. Perhaps at the time, my impression of the man changed, I rose and walked to them and sat down, and he poured a glass of brandy to me. Now The only event of the day I am so encouraged to heed is when he announced his profaning thoughts.
“Now dear, I have given you food that may be illimitable for such a small stomach like dear Jenny here,” he said awhile fully drunk, Jenny chuckled though he kept his cries for just a drop of brandy for himself yet I managed to hold my necessary infallible aggression towards his wild request. Sir, I was not so drunk to reach a state of despair as I had refused any more of that after a while, let me turn get back to his announcement.
“As you may wonder, why is this incoherent old man babbling? Perhaps for that, I have a very good reason, I now announce that I am very well ready to leave this damned country,”
And then with his announcement, there was a sheer incredulity of silence within us.
“Now, My family has been waiting for me, across the ocean to Rome. I was so fond of this place a few years back but I am tired as much as I was so fond of it earlier, I am tired. The country is doomed and for the poor, that is all for me to say.” He sat down as he finished his sentence, and then I ventured to wonder, in this wicked land We found a single such person who had no such wicked expectation from us and now he was all but to go away? With every day I got to know regarding this earth, caged upon the meagre of shillings and freed upon the value of money. Such fear in the eyes of the poor and such a glistening look in the eyes of people with the possession of damned money!
The rain trembled as the heavy breeze possessed such powers, Mr. Garret looked out and the sudden view of the rain had deceived his cheery feelings.
“Ah, it is raining yet again, I wonder if it is there any day when the rain will desert us,” his words had the vilest possession of his annoyed feelings.
“Oh sir, I assure you there will be many days when you will be so much delighted to see the sun just for once,”
“I see then I must return to America before those days arri----” Before he could complete the sentence a mark had interposed him, a certain mark that was manifestly showing the appearance of such a wicked act on such a feeble arm. Yes, the arm of Miss Sallow. Mr. Garret could not do anything else besides heed it. He surveyed it for a minute then Eleanor disturbed his attentive eyes.
“Allow me sir to know what has stolen your eyes from the rain?”
“Oh, it is the…. Uh, it is the mark, I wonder how you received such an unjaded scar?”
“What if I say that I had burnt it when I was a kid, would you put your trust in my words?”
“Miss Shallow, if you put your trust in me then you shall reveal the real reason for such a horrible scar,”
Eleanor stopped for a moment and dispersed into a long thought, No matter how much she could think she was not in a position to let the reason of this audacious gift that was provided to her by the previous master come to her lips.
“May I reveal it later? Allow me to go sir as I have a lot of work to finish.”
Mr. Garret sat there with faces of all sorts but nothing like irritable or unkind as he understood the certain limit of any pain that remarks with any trauma. He never hesitated to let her go and never tried to force her to reveal such a barbaric act that trembled her poor soul but his conclusion to be made towards the damned world.
